I don't know...I'll ask him. I can tell you that he did this for me and he lives 60 miles away from me and has never seen a Venture before...did this from MY instructions. Wally

Here's what a buddy did for me...and I like it A LOT. Wally

OK so I decided that I wanted a cover to go on my gas cap...for two reasons. One, to eliminate any glare off the purty chrome. And secondly, to have something to set my gas cap onto when I am gassing up the bike. Here's the one I bought. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/4/83/407/all/1/186/0/detail.aspx To make a long story short...this thing SUCKS!!! So, I had a buddy of mine make me one. I thought he did a fine job on this. My name of my website is ArkieBiker and he customized this one for me. Fits like a glove and I don't have to struggle like HECK to get the thing over the cap. Plus, this one will hold up a LOT longer than the Yamaha piece of crap. I just wanted to share it with some of you here. Wally

Here are some shots of how I have mine mounted. I have the entire wiring harness under the fairing. Very neat install. The ram mounts are the way to go!!! I use a brake reservoir cover ram mount for the antenna and I use a Kuryakn handlebar mount that works VERY WELL and looks good for the GPS itself. Here are some pics. Wally

One WORD...FABULOUS!!! I'll post pics in my next post as to how I mounted on my bike. Another word...HEAVEN!!! I LOVES my Zumo 665!! Over on my Zumoforums.com website...we are having LOTS of discussions about this GPS. Here are some screenshots of the GPS in action. http://www.gregrice.com/zumo665/zumo665screenshots.htm

Right, but I wasn't talking about the NHTSA, I was talking about the IISH. The IIHS is not a government agency but, yes they are asking a government agency to consider a law to make ABS brakes mandatory on all new bikes. There are lots of organizations that are not affiliated with the government that ask for changes in laws. Even ABATE, which is an organization for bikers rights has to work closely with government agencies to initiate change. I think I just misunderstood and thought you were talking only of the IIHS.

Chickenhawk, I was under the impression that with the LIGHT BAR BRACKET installed and the lights attached to the bracket...that I would not have to take the lights off. Wally -
Hmmmm, regardless of their motives and whether you like them or not, I can't see any affiliation with the government or anything stating it is a governmental agency. Looks more like it is an independent organization funded mostly by all the major insurance companies. Just saying...

Thanks Dale...I'm not worried about the wiring part...since it already has the Zumo 660 (they are almost identical)...all I'll have to do is wire it the same way. I mostly just worried about getting the fairing off and then back on...preferably with no left over parts. :-) Wally -
OK...I printed off Freebird's excellent instructions for splitting the fairing...and then as I was reading over them, I noticed these were published in 2006. I have a 2009 Venture WITH THE LIGHT BAR BRACKET, so I know I won't have to remove my lights...but are there ANY other changes on splitting the fairing from the 2006 models up to the 2009 models? Any MORE tips or things to look out for. I am splitting my fairing so I can install (actually replace), the wiring harness for my Garmin 665 GPS. Anything, TIPS, TOOLS, or WARNINGS would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wally

Hole in my saddle bag!

You gotta wife? Whenever something is MISSING or TORE UP around my bike (or computer room)...I go straight to my wife, who always intially says, "I don't know what you're talking about"...then proceeds to confess SOMETHING related to my questioning. Yep...check the wife!! -
Just installed my Trunk Organizer today. Very easy install and actually a pretty nice little luxury to have in the trunk there. Actually, it takes up little space and fits the contours of the trunk pretty well (by using velcro). I was very pleased with this addition and it will keeps LOTS of neat little things at my fingertips. Here is a link to where I purchased it ($34.95): http://www.americanmotorcycleaccessories.com/proddetail.asp?prod=AMA0790 Here are few pics.

Yamaha Service REALLY is a pain
rumboogy replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK...guys...I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer...so I'll just come right out and ask... I need 4 bolts right? What sizes will I need and are two of the bolts one size and the other two another size? Remember, I am getting the mounting bracket from Tony. Thanks for the clarity. Wally -
Yamaha Service REALLY is a pain
rumboogy replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks, I'll try that, but I am thinking I will need something that will get more 'grip' in the hex bolt. Thanks though... Wally -
I ordered the Light Bar Bracket from Tony on here and today when I thought I would at least loosen the bolts that holds the light bar on...I barely could get the right one out...but it finally broke loose and I was able to unscrew it. But the left one was already slighly worn out...and it is so tight I can't get it. Now the 5mm hex key can't get a good hold in the bolt. Why would they tighten those THAT tight...especially when they are so hard to get to. I even bought a set of ball end hex wrenches. So, short of taking the thing back to the dealer to put the bracket on...anyone got any ideas as to a way to remove this wollared out bolt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wally

It's just a little preliminary...but I just got confirmation that Garmin is going to send me the Zumo 665 (discounted)...and when I get it, I am thinking I will be selling my Zumo 660 and Zumo 550...still not a 100% sure yet, but leaning towards selling them. Both are in EXCELLENT condition and the Zumo 550 (with XM radio) will only be sold with the GSM30 XM antenna. I will sell at reasonable cost (fair, but reasonable). I'll post in the want ads if I decide to sell and should know by the weekend. Wally

Thanks to Freebird for an EXCELLENT pictoral and instructions regarding moving the fairing. I am about to do this myself so I can upgrade my Zumo 660 to the Zumo 665. Again, I appreciate the detailed instructions and I only have a couple of minor questions since the original instructions were written by Freebird in 2006. My first question is the 2 allen bolts size. I think they are 5mm, but I'm not for sure until I get some "ball end" allen wrenches. So are these bolts 5mm? My second question or request is for any additional tips for splitting the fairing or things that I should look for while the fairing is off. Thanks again for the great information. Wally
