  1. Was wondering about people's experiences with routing the wire from the trunk to under the seat? Just had the dealer wire mine. The mechanic ran the wire over the inside top of the trunk came out the back of the top of the trunk behind the passenger backrest (drilled hole), dropped down under the passenger seat and then connected into the wiring under the seat. So, you can actually see the wire running from behind the passenger backrest to under the passenger seat (3-4" worth). It works, and I can secure the wire so it aligns with one of the seams, but IMO, it doesn't look all that great. Also, seems likely to have problems... with the lid going up/down, the wires are going to rub/flex with every opening (although, they are wrapped in electrical tape). I was thinking it may have been better to come out the bottom of the trunk, leaving enough loose wire to allow for the trunk opening/closing. Was wondering what others have done that may be better, or should I just live with it? It does add a lot of light on the back end, which is always good. Also, if anyone is intersted, the Raven color blends very well on my 07 Blue/Black RSV (you can't buy a blue light/spoiler). As always, thanks in advance for your thoughts. Bob
  2. Thanks again to all for the suggestions. Looks like I've got some options to consider. Have a great pm. Bob
  3. Looks like the oil was indeed overfill. The bottom of the shock is oil-free. I also checked the air in the shock, and it read 0. Put 30lbs in it and it ran it 100 miles today. Ran great. Wife is happy, I'm happy... the bike is sitting in the garage as I type. BTW... if anyone was wondering, IMO, the Venture handles much better than the RSTD. Corners better, runs at low speed better, better balanced and NO Clutch Basket whine ! Plus, I can lock the bars during low speed turns without smashing the bars into my legs. I absolutely loved my RSTD, until I put some miles on the Venture... what a difference. I'm looking forward to the riding season ! Thank you again for all the responses and advice... it really helped. Bob
  4. Saddletramp, Vent in the windshield? Is that something you added or did I miss a feature on the Venture ? Sounds like it could be the solution... Bob
  5. Good Morning. Was looking for some advice/experience on this. I'm in the process of trading up from an RSTD to a Venture. Test rode the Venture on Sat. What an amazing ride! Wife is Very happy with this bike. Seemed like there was much less wind on me while riding the Venture vs RSTD (clearly due to the full fairing). My concern is that in hot/humid weather it may be too hot/not enough breeze to ride. Any thoughts/experiences from the fellow Venture riders out there? One of the things I love about the RSTD is that is stays cool even in humid August 90+ degrees days. I do have a tendency towards heatstroke (not good on a bike, nor a good quality for a biker...) so I have to keep an eye on this stuff. Also, I noticed in Yamaha's accessories book, a Tinted Lower Wind Vent that is supposed to direct air into the engine/leg area. Anyone have any experience with these? Any thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated ! Thanks! Bob
  6. I'll climb under the bike and check out the shock. I also looked through a ton of pix on this and the Yamaha site, and sure enough, as Freebird indicated, seems like every Venture has the same issue. I guess I just never noticed it before. Might have to look into those leveling links as well. Thanks again to all for the suggestions! As always, this site is a wealth of information.
  7. Hadn't thought of that, great suggestion ! Thank you !
  8. Had a similar experience last fall. Went to the dealer to buy a filter and they were out. Gave me a filter for a snowmobile telling me the only difference was that it was 1mm longer. I've had it on for about 2k miles with no worries. Service manager told me they do it all the time between the different bikes to cut down on inventory... Bob
  9. That's exactly what it looked like earlier today. I guess it must be the way it is. Looks like I'm looking at the same yr/color bike as yours. That is a great looking bike. I'd never seen the blue/black before today, and was really impressed. Thanks for the picture and your response. Ride safe. Bob
  10. BrakePad, Thanks for the quick response! Did adding air to shock and tire help level things out? How do you find the bike pulls a trailer? The bike actually has a hitch on it... Enough power 2 up with a trailer? Thanks! Bob
  11. Hello again, Had one more question. The bike I'm looking at has some pretty good scratches right on the high point of one of the sidebag covers. About 1/8in wide. Too deep to buff out. Was wondering if anyone had suggestions on quick ways to touch up. Bike is Blue. Does Yamaha make touch up paint? Anyone ever had a cover repainted? Ideas on cost? Maybe some well-placed pinstriping? I'm open to any/all suggestions. Ideally cheaper would be better as we're just buying the bike. I actually checked into buying new covers. I was told you have to buy a whole new bag, not just the cover. Quoted price was $960 for just the bag... no installation included. That a bit steep for my means. Thanks as always for any thoughts/advice. Bob
  12. I'm in the process of buying a used 07 Venture with 3k miles on it. (upgrading from an 05 RSTD). Test drove the bike today. Runs great, however, when my wife climbs on, the back of the bike seems to drop below level (I pulled up next to a store window and noticed it). She is not that big... (140lbs), so I thought this unusual. Wondering if the rear shock needs replacement? or do they all drop that far? My RSDT does not. How could I tell? Bike seemed fine over bumps, no bottoming out... Also, I noticed a very slight layer of clean oil on the bike facing side of the right cargo bag cover. Would a blown shock do this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks very much in advance for any insite ! Bob
  13. acain, I beleive 8k would be a great price. I was at the dealer last week looking at a new RSV (wife is looking to upgrade the passenger comfort level). I have a 2005 RSTD, and he offered me 8k for it in trade. So... I'd assume, he's going to mark it up to re-sell. Thus, I'd think, you got a 1 year newer bike for what I was told is wholesale. Congratulations ! You'll love the bike.
  14. Efudd, I have a 2005 RSTD as well. Same issue with cruise. I too (like Brian) recall something about the cruise shutting off of you accelerate over a certain amount from the prior setpoint. I believe its designed this way. I believe its stated in the manual somewhere. Hope this helps. Bob
  15. JFF, I've had the same problem as efudd with my 2005 RSTD. Got a small piece of debris stuck in the cancel button. At first look, you could barely tell something was holding the cancel buton in... for some reason I decided to hit the cancel button again and discovered much more resistnence than there should have been. Anyway dug out the foreign material, haven't had an issue since and its been a couple of years. Hope this helps. Bob
  16. Have the same issue with my 05 RSTD. Tends to be in a particular RPM. Shifting up or down will make it stop. Its annoying, buy is outweighed by the other benefits of the bike. As you've read form other responses its the Clutch Basket that is causing the problem. Last I talked with Yamaha, they'll replace it... but... dealer told me sometimes it works, sometimes it gets worse, sometimes it simply changes the RPM level at which you hear the sound. Oh... and they'll only do the replacement 1 time... so if it gets worse... you own it. Hope this helps. It is an amazing bike. Much like yourself, my wife has just started riding over the last year or so. We ride 2 up most of the time and it handles great.
  17. Dave, Had a similar experience on my 05 RSTD. Had the passing lamps dealer installed. When it was done it was clear that they didn't have a lot of room to work with... wires were crimped, etc. I raised concerns but everything was told it was fine, all was working so off I went. Well... a little time goes by and the thin insulation starts to crack and before you know it... blown fuses... I originally had trouble with this when it got wet... then it became all the time. Had to rewire them completely. BTW - at least on my setup - there is also a glass fuse in the main headlight that blows if the passing lamps themselves have trouble. There is no spare for it on the bike, so I carry one of those in the tool kit. Hope this helps. Bob
  18. David,

The work you've done on the rear trunk and front fairing is amazing! I've got an 05 RSTD as well and have been looking to get a rear trunk for it. If can ask... where did you find the trunk and how did you get it mounted? Also, any idea of expected cost would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  19. Principal, I just ran a test on this myself. Spent a week in Laconia for bike week. Ran premium (92 octane)... got 44 mpg. Ran basic 89 octane... got 44 mpg. Ran 87 octane... got 44mpg. FYI - I tend to not shift into OD until I'm cruising at 50+mph, (you can find previous posts on the forum regarding this). I do this so I'm not constantly down-shifting in the turns to re-gain accelaration/torque. However, the faster I get it into OD, the gas mileage improves to about 46mpg. Hope this helps. Bob
  20. I've got the chrome covers on my 2005 RSTD. Put the K & S filters in as the stock filters wouldn't fit (actually says this in the parts catalog). No re-jetting required. Runs great. Good luck with them. Bob
