What tools do you carry? I did a review of CruzTools Metric kit
RDawson replied to VentureFar's topic in Watering Hole
All the time a 1/4” socket set, screw drivers, metric ratchet wrenches. Long trips add a plug kit, compressor, 3/8&1/2” ratchets and assorted sockets, ohmeter, crimps, wire. -
I finally got around to dropping my FJR pumpkin off today to get the speedo sensor hole milled out. Got the new Nexen mounted and have an Edset’s Bluestreak being delivered Wednesday. Gotta start riding again soon, mods are more expensive than gas.

I would practice with 1/8 or thinner so you don’t have to burn as hot. You’ll be “stacking dimes” before you know it.

Is TCI going bad?
RDawson replied to SpencerPJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do the 1st gens have a tip switch. My sister has a Goldwing trike that was doing the same thing, was a tip over switch. Before they found it she got pretty good pulling the clutch, turning key off and on, and releasing the clutch without losing hardly any speed. -
This is my favorite aluminum fab. Glass shop brought me a brand new dodge truck and a picture of what they wanted. Spool gun used on this one.

Off Road adventure, on a first gen Venture (advice?)
RDawson replied to Ipleedthe5th's topic in Watering Hole
Aha I knew Puc couldn’t leave this one alone. -
Funny to see that today, I sold my last boat 24 years ago and just bought a small bass boat about the time COVID shut down the schools. My wife, daughter, and I spent most of the summer fishing. Just today the wife told me I need to get a bigger boat to take kids/grandkids out tubing and skiing in the future. I had to remind her neither of the girls are married yet so I’m hoping there’s not grandkids in the near future. That is exactly the kind of boat I had in mind to buy whenever I run across a deal.

Ahhhh @cowpuc you brought back some memories. My first welding I learned in high school was in an auto body vocational class. We learned with the torches on flat sheet metal, migs were just coming about and cost more than a good used truck. We pushed that puddle around until I was welding quarter panels in wrecks without thinking about it. The next year they started a welding class but the shop wasn’t ready until Christmas. I had worked in a sheet metal shop over the summer so I’d expanded on my welding there. I was the only one in class with any experience so once I did my coupons with stick and mig I got to play with a brand new Miller tig the rest of the year while everybody else learned from the beginning. As a joke somebody handed me two Pepsi cans stacked and challenged me to weld em, teacher said it couldn’t be done. As a 17 year old that knew everything I took it as a challenge, a few weeks later I presented the teach with two stacked cans fused all the way around with a continuous bead. No telling how many cans I burned up trying 2-3 hours a day until I got it. Wish I’d kept those cans. I have a pretty well stocked welding shop that since I decided to semi-retire last year is just there for my personal repairs or playing, the only thing missing is a high freq tig to do aluminum. That is probably coming next summer just because I want one to play with again. I haven’t tigged aluminum in 20-25 years so I doubt I’ll ever do cans again but I turn down work every week on aluminum boats that just fixing a few a year would be profitable enough to buy more Yamaha parts.

Don’t go too cheap. The cheap flux core welders are a pain. Try to upgrade to a gas unit and learning is pretty easy. Use the right wire and heat, a cold mig can make a decent looking weld that has no penetration.

Wet Carb
RDawson replied to Ipleedthe5th's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Oil from the airbox? Common for bikes overfilled with oil. The crankcase vent blows oil mist up into the airbox and when on the sidestand it pools in the left rear and drips down the carb. -
I’ve often thought of building a more modern looking Indycar using a chevy 4 cylinder with a cockpit 2seat setup. Think it’d be a blast to drive up to the DQ.

Thats why said after the bolt breaks off. If it’s broken the tank comes off with no problem and can be put safely out of the way.
-
Next option I use a lot if it breaks off is to lay a nut over the broken bolt and weld it inside the nut. Almost all back out with no resistance while still hot from the weld.

I had a local dealer knowingly sell me a truck with a leaking axle seal, I have a friend that worked there and warned me about it after he saw I bought it. I gave them one chance to make it right and cost them several new sales when they refused. I went out of town to buy my wife’s new car (same brand they sale) and made it a point to stop by the dealership driving it with the other guys name on the plate. Every time I buy a vehicle I take it and show it to the salesman and remind him how much money a $10 part has cost him.

I’m up around 20k on it, hard miles, two up, and lots of miles pulling a trailer. It’s not worn out but I don’t let my tires get anywhere near slick. I was in the tire shop last week getting both Jeeps re-shoed and went ahead and ordered it while I was there. At $60 I don’t mind throwing away a few thousand miles knowing I’ve always got good rubber under me.

Our section is called Embarassing Moments and comes with a $5 fine for dropped bikes.

Had a dr once asked me what was special about self employed people that made them heal faster. I’d cut the end off a finger and was back on the construction site two days later, he didn’t tell me not to work after surgery so I did. I think that’s pretty normal for those with commitments and the need to work to eat.

Careful boss. I catch a lot of flack from guys at work about how I work up high, use power tools without guards, and generally ignore safety rules with the exception of safety glasses. I’m a wimp when it comes to my eyes, take care of it.

I typed in Yamaha Venture on FB marketplace and found a couple trikes. One 07 blue in Ohio.

Thanks Don. There is a reason the respect here noticeably present.
