Eye surgery again tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Well, after steady progression on my right eye, with everything doing good, I had a setback this past weekend. I went to the VA eye clinic Monday morning and they did a review and set me up with the eye surgeon visit this morning. After a review there, I am now scheduled for surgery tomorrow. It appears I have a detached retina and macular edemia along with some scar tissue. When it rains, it pours.

At this point, I can not see anything with my right eye other than a very bright pin point light. I hate to be pesimistic, but I do not feel good about what vision I might get back.

Hey Randy,

Good luck with the surgery, I am sure it will turn out fine, its just so disheartening having to go thru the surgery more than once.

I have reasonable vision with the right eye, after being almost totally black in that eye before 2 of the surgeries. so try to keep a positive note, it can and probably will turn out to have useful vision.

Very best of luck to you. I hope the VA has a good retinal specialist on staff. My wife works for an eye surgeon who's quite good, but he doesn't do retina's.

Let us know how it turns out.

The VA sends out surgeries as serious as mine to a retina center.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Randy,

With all the surgeries, radiation, injections and etc. I have had done on my right eye over the past couple of years, I can honestly say that I understand how you feel. I hope and pray that you will regain full vision in the eye. I will also say though, having lost all the vision in my right eye, that though it takes some getting used to it is not the end of the world by any means. You are a strong person and will do fine my friend.

Randy, keep the faith brother. I went through the same things you are going through. Mine started in June of 2010. It started in my left eye and after going through 9 different procedures I got my sight back and then it started in my right. Just remember to do exactly as told after surgery so the retina will heal properly. The bubble is kind of weird in the eye but it does go away. Oh by the way after a total of 15 different procedures on both eyes combined including getting them cut open twice each and all the liquid removed I now have 20/20 vission for distance and 20/50 for reading. A pair of readers correct that. It can get discouraging but they can fix it if you do as told.

Well, my 10:30 appointment got moved up to 8:00 so that sped things up a bit. This time I was awake more than last time, but did OK. One of the differences this time is the doctor did not do the air bubble as he did last time, but filled my eye with some kind of oil. I started to ask if was the "energy conserving" type, but I figured he would not understand.

I know that all that I can do is follow directions and wait, but I wish I had a bit more optimism about the final outcome.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

the silicone oil is your best solution as it hold the retina against the back of the eye until it mends and heals. The oil will not allow much vision but when it comes out you will have pretty good odds at vision. If you have an artificial implant lense in place you will have to get that replaced as well, as the oil makes the artificial lens opaque.

I have my fingers, toes and even eyes crossed, hoping for you to get a great outcome on your eye. I know it feels like a long haul right now, things will get better.

Here's hoping for the very best outcome on recovering your eye sight.

After an accident, I too lost all vision in my right eye. Took some getting used to at my age (almost 60) but now, almost 10 yrs later, hardly ever notice it.

Always take ALL the safety precautions with the good eye.
