  1. Not 100% sure that the barn is heated but I'm going to venture a guess that it's not. Good advice with the steel wool in the exhaust pipes, I'd not thought of that in the past. My old Honda was only a 600 so it was much smaller and I could just store it in the garage. I'd staybil the fuel, fog the cylinders, take the battery out, park it on some 1x4's to keep the tires off the concrete, cover the whole thing in a good thick layer of WD-40, and then top it off with a tarp (mostly to keep the WD-40 from getting on us if we accidentally bumped the bike. Never had any problems with mice but I always wondered if they were going to crawl up the exhaust. The steel wool idea will prevent that for sure.
  2. Sorry to disappoint but I'm a self proclaimed fair weather rider. When the high for the day regularly falls below 60 I put her away. I know I'm a sissy but that's what I do. Generally only ride 6 months a year. Wife and I both hate the cold so some day we will move somewhere that I can ride closer to 10-11 months/year.
  3. Not an option for me. Bike is being stored about 2.5 hrs away so once she's down for the winter she stays down till next season
  4. On my old honda one of the many things I did when winterizing was I always fogged the cylinders and plugs with fogging oil before putting it away for winter. I'd also sprits the top of the plugs with a little WD-40 to keep them from getting any nasty buildup. Come summer I never had a start up problem. She would just fire right up. I've done some searching on the forum and see lot of talk about draining the carbs or putting in staybli/seafoam and not draining the carbs but no mention of fogging the cylinders. I don't want to start another "to drain or not to drain" debate, so let's stay away from that topic. Question is do you fog your cylinders or Is this not something that needs to be done on the RSTD? Thanks
  5. called cruisercustomizing.com and they suggested this http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/covermax-standard-motorcyle-covers-xl-touring-bike/part/TR-10-7512 I'll let you all know how it works.
  6. Next weekend I'm puttin the bike away for her long winter's nap. It's going to be staying in a pole bar at my Uncle's place. I figure it would probably be a good idea to invest in a cover to keep dust off of it. I've got the 1300 RSTD, not sure if that's going to require a "Large" bike cover or an "XL" bike cover. Suggestions? Thanks
  7. Picked up the bike on Saturday. WAY more pullback than I was expecting. I actually feel like it might be a bit TOO much. Rather than having my arms outstretched as they were with the stock bars, my elbows are almost right at my side. I'm going to play with the bar height a little and see if raising the bars just a hair moves the bars enough away to be a touch more comfortable. Definitely more comfortable then the stock bars. With these bars I found myself driving much more aggressively. Just need to find that "sweet spot" I think and I'm really golden. Weirdest thing is I feel like I've got to get used to driving the bike all over again. Riding with the new bars was like riding the first week I got the bike.
  8. Since I didn't have to do anything but re-route some of the lines I didn't see much reason to worry about replacing them. Plus since I didn't do the work and it was cheaper to NOT have them run new lines but to reroute the existing lines (donno, go figure, I figured it would be easier, thus cheaper to run new lines but whatever) I'd let the shop worry about it. I'm sort of ticked off enough that they charged me $30 to "install new grips" which is BS because they would have had to take the grips off the old bars to put on the new bars anyway, so if anything by just having them install new grips I made their job easier and I got charged $30 more for it. rackin frackin... I digress, I can't pick up the bike today. Raining like crazy between the shop and home. I'm not comfortable enough on the bike to ride when it's wet much less in the rain. Will have to wait for another day.
  9. I got them through Phat, http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/Flanders_Handlebars_Wide_Max_Pullback_Handlebars_p/650-08783.htm No problems with them saying they "were in stock" until you tried to actually order them and then suddenly they were out of stock. Only real "issue" with ordering them is that they were a gift to me. Mom tried to have them ship to my house but because it was her first order with Phat they wouldn't ship to a non-billing address. It got to be a little bit of a to-do but we got it squared away. I'm looking forward to picking up the bike tonight and seeing how they feel.
  10. Got the bars today. Dropping the bike off tonight to get the new bars put on (while I could do it myself, with a lot of help from Jim, I figured that the $100 the dealership is going to charge me is less costly than 4 or 5 hours of our time). Looking forward to trying the new bars out!
  11. Heck, it sounds like I'd be happy with a USED set even!
  12. Yep, the PO must have had a backrest put on cause it came with the bike. Any recommendations for where to buy the bars from?
  13. My handlebars don't seem to be quite right. Seems like I have to reach a little farther than is really comfortable. I don't really notice it until a longer ride. It seems like the handlebars are *just* far enough away that I end up tensing up my arms, shoulders and neck. Once I realize I'm doing it, I can try to relax a little but usually by the time I've noticed I'm already in pain and it's too late. I ran across these for the RSV [ame=http://www.ebay.com/itm/200603911792?_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&viewitem==&item=200603911792=&vxp=mtr#ht_500wt_1413]Yamaha Royal Star 1.5" Handlebar Risers Venture | eBay[/ame] and I'm wondering if they have something similar (or if these ones fit) for a RSTD. I don't think I need a whole lot, just need to move the handle bars about an inch closer to me. Thanks folks!
  14. Today I rolled over my first 1k on my RSTD! Yea!
  15. Too bad the good Samaritan law doesn't cover a person and keep them from getting fired because they were performing an act that would fall under this law. I think it should. I've herd of a few cases like this where a person was performing something that would fall under the good Samaritan law and end up being fired because of it.
  16. Sorry, I'm confused. That link is to one you have or one you don't have? Curious to know if that would fit on the pillion or if it's too big.
  17. It wasn't me that overfilled it, it was the PO. I know better. I usually have the wife hold the bike upright while I check the window. Then I hold the bike upright and have her check it, so she knows where it should be at.
  18. So what's the trick to getting the stupid "quick connect" off so I could get the cowling off so I can get at the air filter?
  19. It was over full enough to the point that the bike had to be on it's kick stand before I could see the oil level in the window. It's got the correct amount of oil in it now.
  20. Oil's all changed and had a little test ride. The Rotella T 15-40 seems to work fine so far, no noticeable difference. Well, it seems to run a little smoother but that's probably all in my head. If anything it might RIDE a little smoother because I adjusted the suspension and filled the tires. Long ride tomorrow (about 108 miles and 2.5 hrs) so we will she how she handles.
  21. I was nearly sure that's what the manual said. I wonder if she'll run any better after a oil change with the proper amount of oil in it ...
  22. I'm going with the Rotella T 15-40. (cause its not too expensive and they have it at O'Riley autoparts) Thanks for the input!
  23. Your supposed to check the oil level with the bike standing up on a level surface, correct? IE not sitting on the kick stand? My bad but I'm checking the oil for the first time since buying the bike last week from the sealership. Either the stealership or the PO WAY overfilled the oil. I can't see the top oil level unless she's sitting on her kick stand!
  24. That the same stuff Mag1101 is talking about?
  25. Bummed I can't come out and meet you folks. Got a previous family engagement that I can't blow off.
