  1. Getting the bikes ready for the ride to Daytona. We replaced Redbeards 99 RSV front pads. When we took off the old pads, both copper/brass shims were mising from both sides? Did this shim come on a 99? I know I have them on my 2001. What purpose do the shims serve? We simply replaced the pads, leaving out the shim, but what effect does this have on the brakes?
  2. Redbeard and I are meeting up Wed morning at 7ish I -20 east, heading to exit 216 on 75s to meet a few others. Then we'll be heading south on 75 to the turnpike in Wildwood and into the Orlando area. we're planing on meeting Sat at the first turn, probaly the speedway fri and rossmeyers thurs? we're riding home sunday morning, hope to see some folks during the trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Yup, AMF saved Harley Davidson, HD bought the company back from AMF in 1981. The shovel was made until about 1984 till they came out with what was new then , the EVO. While theres been many a bad word about the longivity of the make, especially here in this forum, its amazing that my bike was made 28 years ago, still has orginal paint, cases, trans etc. and is still a VERY strong runner! I'm not gonna open the can of worms again, comparing brands, people ride what they ride. As long as thery're on two wheels, its all that matters. Most here on this forum would probably not appreciate Bertha, shes big, black and VERY loud. She definiately makes a statement, sitting there dripping oil, or ideling with drag pipes, vibrating everything around her. I've done several long trips on her, abet with some mechanicial problems, but its the journey, not the destination. I ride because I ride, do my own wrenching when I can, am willing to learn and have a very fond appreciation of old iron, whatever brand, Nortons, Triumphs, Indians, HD, Bezzers, etc. People laughed at Bert Munroe, but he took that ol' Indian to seemingly impossible feats. I've sat idely by watching posts on "Bikers" and brand bashing. While I'm not a big fan of the company, nor thery're new marketing stratigies with logos, clothing, chrome and cat collars and the like, I do feel that the older bikes are part of the heritage that made motorcycling what it is today. While I do own an RSV (strictly by choice, mostly by cost, and the fact the OL was tired of riding on the back of a hard shovel) I enjoy both my bikes, just for different reasons. So if my 1981 AMF/Harley Davison is so terrible, even though mostly stock as it came of the showroom floor and still running, so be it.
  4. Mines my baby, got about 50 miles on a fresh top end I did myself. Was the last real motor HD built that was user friendly, all that electronic crap........ Squid, ya got yourself a real classic there, enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. No problem, not to hurt any feelings here, but nothing sounds like a shovel............
  6. This one had great info. Use it all the time for my 81 FLHS. I'm a little familiar with 80", PM if ya have any questions. http://www.shovelhead.us/
  7. Hm..Thats a good point Larry, didn't think about that? I will def. do it that way when I replace the seals after rebuilding the calipers. Thanks all for the heads up! Are there pre-cut SS braided lines or do they have to be made? BTW, looking at your signature, just FYI, I had the pleasue of skating with Gordie Howe..................... :-)
  8. I've got a hand vacumn pump that I use to help in flushing the lines Will do again after getting the new seals for the pistons.............
  9. well, ordered two rebuild kits and two sets of copper crush washers for the brake lines. Gonna pull the pistons, polish and completly clean the brake system. Scoots got little under 60k, maybe its due anyways? It might be combination of air and the new softer pads, but will know more after replacing the seals and re flushing the brakes fluid yet again. will keep ya posted.
  10. We got a group heading down from W. Ga. on Wed, the 14th. Gonna have breakfest at the Waffle House on Hwy. 154 at exit 216 on 75s at about 9ish, then soutbound on 75 into Daytona for the weekend. We're planning on meeting up at the First Turn Sat afternoon and will probably be at the speedway either Thurs or Fri. We are definately going to Destination Daytona in memory of Bruce Rossmeyers recent death. Hope to see some fellow venture riders while we're down there. Anyone heading that way, feel free to join in! We're also planing on stoping by the swapmeet on 415 just outside Samsula and of course will make a stop into Cabbage Patch for some biker entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Yes, first thing I did was flushed ALL my fluids, fronts, rears and clutch. Had some issues with rear fluid boiling so I figured do all at once was a cheep fix. Used new bottle. As far as the pads, don't remember if they were HH or not? But I know their composition was WAY different than the ones I took off. I did not notice any real glazing on rotors but will check. Tried to clean pistons as well as I could, pumped them to the limit, cleaned with brake parts cleaner and a soft toothbrush and pushed back in. Inclined to remove calipers, remove pistons and clean, polish and replace seals and then reflush/bleed all lines again?
  12. Noticed front brakes were getting real noisey? Pulled pads and seemed to have 50-60% pads left, but they seemed awfully glazed. Had some new EBC's on the bench so replaced them anyways? Bled system and took for a ride. Now I don't know if its my imagination or I screwed up, but brakes seem really Soft? Seems I have to pump them to get them to grab hard. Now they do stop the bike, but I feel they should grab much harder than they do? I'm gonna re-bled the system to ensure all air is out but I have a feeling in the back of my head that the pistons are sticking???? I've gone through three sets of pads on the rear, have 35k on the fronts and still 60% left? wondering if this hasn't been an issue for a bit? If I have to take apart the calipers, rebuild, is it a big deal? Searched for a post here, but???? Theres a procedure in the manual, but sometimes folks here have such better insite????? Is there a rebuild kit that needs to be ordered? Leaving for biketoberfest the 14th, so would like to have it done by then???????????? Any help? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Typicaly they start setting up the weekend before, trying to stretch it out a week.............
  14. Before I could post an honest reply to this thread somebody heres gonna have to give me a definition of "Biker" and exactly what thats referring to???????

    Thanks don, I'll PM ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Doing some routine mintenance since we had all this rain and I found the wires to my heated grips broken. Tried to pull back and the connections actualy came off. I never really liked the grips I have and this might be a good time to replace them. Does anyone have a set of heated grips that are a little larger than stock that they've had luck with? the ones I have now are to thin, would like soomething a little larger in diameter? I looked in J&P and saw nothing?????
  18. ditto, we used toluene, acetone, benzene for cleaning hydrocarbons, used as any other solvent. so may others I can't even remember. Did remember having to wear gloves when we started with PCB's though........
