83 TCI test
bongobobny replied to ChurchBuilder's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, what you have to do is switch where the "Boost sensor" gets it's vacuum from, on '83 it is carb vacuum, on '84 up it is manifold vacuum. That being said, to just test if the '83 is working or not, you can simply just plug it in and see if the bike starts and rev's up reasonably ok. At idle it should run smooth, or about as smooth as to be expected. The main point is if the unit IS good, or at least not totally FUBAR the bike should start and run. Unfortunately due to the advance being 180 degrees out of phase the bike will not accelerate very well, and unfortunately I'm not sure where you would get the proper vacuum from on the '84, on the '84 it comes from the "intake manifold" or the carb bot as it is referred to... Maybe someone else has that answer, never owned an '83, just know about the backwards vacuum signal even though it is the same boost sensor on both years, the TCI advance circuitry is inverted from the 83 and the 84... -

Actually the Harbor Freight trailer is a good buy for the money and occasionally they have them on sale for a very inexpensive price like $300. The only thing is they have a solid axle and 8" tires. I have a Piggy Backer trailer which is pretty much the same frame and plastic box with IRS and larger tires and LED lighting and has lots of room! Towed it with my 1st gen and my 2nd gen before and after turning it into a trike. Unfortunately the Piggy Backer comes as a kit and costs a little over $1000, but it is easily assembled in an hour or two... Both the HF and the Piggy Backer weigh around 150 lbs. or so. -
Now THERE'S a waste of time!!

Two G1 questions
bongobobny replied to buyer7's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I personally see nothing wrong with a 30 year old master cylinder, there are rebuild kits out there and they make hones small enough to re-hone the cylinder. They are metal, not plastic, and do not deteriorate! Define "Exploded!" Do you mean the needle fell off, there are a million pieces where once a gauge was?? If you mean it made a squealing noise, the needle bounced around for a short while then it stopped working? If so your speedometer cable probably broke...- 7 replies

Potential Newbie but Needs it Lowered
bongobobny replied to BG Hawks's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hmmmm, having a 29" inseam, I will gladly tell you I could NOT flatfoot my 1st gen, it's a tall (but more nimble) bike, but on my 2nd gen I could just flatfoot it barely. I'm sure with lowering it another inch it would have made all the difference in the world, and from what I hear it also makes it handle better at low speeds but I wouldn't know about that as I triked mine instead (Bosses orders)... -
I think maybe I'll go get my breakfast now, just thought I'd "Tweet" that here so ya all know what I'm doing...

It's going to vary depending on the RC time constant delay of the circuit, it normally is around 5 seconds. If you want to dynamically test your fuel pump just hook it up directly to the battery instead of the wiring harness. As described above there is a circuit that cuts off the fuel pump after a few seconds IF no ignition pulses are detected from the TCI i.e. not cranking and/or running... John, fuel pump failures are nowhere as common for the 1st gen as they are for the 2nd gen's, however they do sometimes happen. What has led you to think you have a fuel delivery problem?? You may have a plugged fuel filter, or a clogged screen in the gas tank or other issues with the petcock assembly. The fact that you seem to indicate you are getting something coming out of the fuel pump makes me think your pump is just fine!

You can always saw off the back half of the shifter then it will be a normal toe only shifter...

PS larger tires on the trailer make a difference! 10 or 12 inch tires roll MUCH better than 8 inch tires! -

Hmmmm, My gut feeling is not to exceed 400 lbs combined weight on the trailer, others may say a lot less! As far as trailering goes, there is pretty much nothing to it! Once you get over the initial concerns there are times more often than not you will forget the trailer is behind you!! That can be kind of a bad thing especially cornering and stopping. remember to swing just a littler wider both left and right turns, and remember the trailer is wider than the bike!! I got reminded of that one time pulling to the right of a line of traffic to make a right turn, there was a guard rail on the side of the road I scraped! You don't need a mile of extra space to stop but you should allow extra space and time to safely stop! You will loose a few MPG's but nothing major, literally only 2 or 3 mpg.. -
Yah! I noticed the 11,000 miles, good grief that's way less than a thousand miles per year!! Like, was it ever driven at all?? Yup, the MM is a special bike, would be nice to own #1 ...

Word of caution with the '83. With that particular year, the first year of production, there WAS an issue with the frame cracking where the rear shock mount attaches, they rusted from the inside out, and the design was a little on the flimsy side. This was corrected with the '84 on up with better reinforcement on the bracket, etc! No, the bike does not split in two or anything, but the bracket breaks away from the frame, and the rear end comes down suddenly as you have no rear suspension any more. Myself I would walk away from that deal, but that is strictly my feeling. Betcha if you check the classifieds here somebody may be selling a 1st gen on this site, and I would trust a member of this site pretty explicitly a lot more than somebody on Craig's Scam List or Fleabay...
