Passing lamp install
YamaDuck replied to Colonel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Doesn't the switch in the fairing do the same thing. I leave mine on all the time but if I want to turn the passing lights off I push the switch in the fairing and the passing lights go off. Why would you need both switches? -

I have know idea. I just followed the directions on Venturer's website. I can only tell you that I have ridden with all three lights on and a heated vest and heated chaps and the battery is doing fine. I have not gone on any long trips with all that turned on (3 or 4 hrs) but around town and short trips of around 150 miles have not been any problem. I have not even use my battery tender. I'm sure if I hook it up it would take a charge it always does but I haven hooked it up in weeks and I ride at least two days a week. Oh by the way I have not unhooked the carb heaters either. So I'm sold. -

I don't know if you are a member of Ventures.org (another great Venture site) but they have instructions on how and why you wire it to the battery using a relay. I followed the instructions and mine work fine and only come on when the ignition is on. I put my relay under the gas tank and the fuse under the seat. Here is a link that may work; http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002007&id=247 http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/pl_diagram.jpg -
Clearview Windshields
YamaDuck replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
So your saying the reason for the soaking is to soften the bugs for cleaning and not part of the maintenance program to keep the windshield from drying out and getting brittle?- 26 replies

Clearview Windshields
YamaDuck replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for the link. Since I bought the RSV used it did not have any instructions with the Clearview. I read the instructions and it said to presoak the windshield for at least 5 minutes and keep the presoak towel separate and only use the towel for presoaking and not use the towel for any other maintanence step but it does not state how often you need to soak the windshield. Does anyone know how often you need to soak the windshield?- 26 replies

I'm shorter than you guys at 5'10 1/2" so I don't need as much leg room I guess. I love my Utopia.I don't think the original question was who likes backrest and who doesn't. The origal question was who makes a good backrest. Bluesman said he had a bad back and wants a backrest. So lets advise him on what type of backrest to get not try and talk him out of getting one. I had to turn my Utopia upside down because I didn't like it hitting me so high in the back even set at it's lowest setting. I have a friend about my hight that did the same thing. To me the Utopia has plenty of adjustability frontwards and backwards up and down. It seems to me (and I'm only guessing here because I haven't done it or needed to do it) that if you back the screw out so far that it vibrates out I would think you should be able to back the screw all the way out and put a nut on the bolt and screw it back into the seatback and thighten the nut to hold it in place. Another reason I like a back rest is when I put my feet on my highway pegs without the backrest my feet feel like I need to hold them on because the seat doesn't hold me in place. When I put the backrest on I can apply some preasure to lock my legs and feet in with out fear of hitting a bump and my foot falling off the highway peg. Now my foot peg his highly adjustable so I have as much leg room as neccessary. When you turn the Utopia upside down the seatback doesn't flop down over the seat. I have a friend that rides double all the time and it doesn't seam to be a problem and I like the fact that I don't have to lift the seatback up everytime I have to get on the RSV.

Clearview Windshields
YamaDuck replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ok I'll try but it looks like someone held a cigarette real close as just as the plastic started to distort pulled the cigarette away. I know that is not what happened but that is what it looks like. Harry http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/vnet_mm.gif- 26 replies

Clearview Windshields
YamaDuck replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Alright I will. I have a 2000 MM with the light brown or tan seats. I'm not sure what color you call it. Do you know if they make a cover to cover the RSV 2000 MM gas cap that matches? Do you know who sells the gas covers?- 26 replies

I purchased a used RSV which has a Clearview windshield installed. It has two or three round distortions in the windshield one of which is very close to my field of view. Does anyone else have these little round distortions in there Clearview windshields? I emailed Clearview about this issue and they have chosen not to reply to me. My Clearview windshield also has a terrible reflection off the gas cap that is very annoying. I can't see paying as much for a windshield as Clearview wants for that quality of windshield and such bad customer service. I'm looking at a Show Chrome tinted short windshield so I can look over it. For $81 it seems like a great buy. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif Harry

Passenger floor board replacement ??
YamaDuck replied to FuzzyRSTD's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
As Starman09 pointed out http://www.rickroushaccessories.com/...oducts_id/4744 Is cheaper but boy they will rob you blind on shipping. I was going to place an order with them and they wanted $60 shipping. I ordered the same thing for South Seattle and the shipping was $19 and change. The total on the orders were within a few dollars of each other and the same parts were on each list. It pays to shop around. Also I could not find a phone number for the Rick Roush store. I did find a number to a Rick Roush store but it was not to the accessory store. -

Man your shopping in the wrong store. Yamaha parts are totally outrageous so you have to save every penny you can. South Seattle has the best prices on Yamaha parts and the best shipping prices on anyone I know. They may be $230 at your Yamaha store but I just checked South Seattle and the price is $173.21! Now that is still a lot of money but it is a lot better than $230. The part number is STR-4WM57-30-01 and heres the link; http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com They offer replacement parts at 30% off. -
Problem with new XXL Clearview
YamaDuck replied to phochief's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Mine has 4 holes and 2 slots. The 2 slots are on the very outside with the holes on the inside. I don't drive at knight that often but when I have I didn't notice in ghost images. I do get a light going across the windshield in the daytime and if I move my head the relection moves. I'll have to check the gas cap. I'm about the same height as you. I bought my RSV used and it had the Clearview tinted windshield on in when I purchased it. It also has the vent. My problem is it has a couple of bubbles (for lack of a better term) or distortions about the size of a pea. I emailed Clearview and asked them if they sold seconds because I found it hard to believe it could pass quality assuarnce. I have not received an answer yet. A friend has a shorty windshield from Show Chrome. I am thinking about getting that one. I was looking at Clearview but if there quality control is questionable then I'll go with Show Chrome. There windshield is half the price of Clearviews anyway.- 22 replies

I just checked and Utopia quick release backrest is only available for the Venture Royal NOT the RSV.

Utopia makes a nice one. It's been a while since I ordered mine but if memory serves me right I think for an additional charge you can get one that is removable. I ride alone so I didn't pay much attention to that. I can't speak for the rest but from everything I hear the other companies listed above make nice ones also. Now I know if your short like me 5'10 1/2" the Utopia hits a little high on my back. It is adjustable but even all the way down it still hit a little high for me. However if you turn it upside down it fits me just about perfect. You do lose a little of the fold down ability because the bottom of the backrest is so close to the top of the seat. I have a 2000 RSV and my understanding is in 2002 they redesigned the seat to make them a little more comfortable so I don't know how that effected the fold down ability if you mount it upside down. The seat is also adjustable for the tilt to make it more comfortable. If your taller then no problem you can leave the Utopia upright and fold it over but if Utopia offers a quick disconnect (which I think they do) then you really don't need it to fold over. If you go to the Utopia website listed above I sure it will tell you. Super nice people to work with and A+ quality.

Considering buying a Venture, but have concerns
YamaDuck replied to MPK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I find that the whine seems to be different on each RSV. Some more noticeable than others. I don't know what the chirp is I've never heard it. I am very fortunate I have a couple of buddies and we all have RSV and we have all ridden each others RSV. My is a 2000 one is a 2005 and one is a 2006. All ride exactly the same but the whine is different on each one. Some more noticeable that others. Mine is the quietest of the bunch. There is nothing wrong with any of them it is just the nature of the beast. So if you have a few friends that have RSV I suggest all of you get together and ride each others RSV and see the difference in the whine. In our case the 2006 had the loudest whine. The funny thing about it though I can ride right beside his and I don't here a thing but when you get on it you hear it easily. So you don't have to be embarrassed if you are riding with your HD buddies because they can't hear it.- 36 replies

Considering buying a Venture, but have concerns
YamaDuck replied to MPK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was in the same boat as you about six months ago except I was looking at used RSV and Goldwings. I hear great things about both motorcycles. I hear complaints about both motorcycles. I went with a 2000 MM RSV and hears why. PRICE, I would have to buy a 6 to 8 year older Goldwing to be able to be in the same price range as a RSV. GAS MILEAGE, compared to the RSV the Goldwings gas mileage was bad. I get about 46 to 48 mpg on my RSV. My Goldwing friends and the research I did showed the Goldwing gets about 35 mpg. CONDITION, Every RSV I looked at compared to the Goldwings the RSV was either better kept up or they just don't show there age as bad. Every Goldwing I looked at had bottons missing or wood paneling fading, etc. Every RSV I looked at looked almost brand new. Now part of the reason was I was looking ar 1999 to 2002 RSV compared to 1003 to 1996 Goldwings because they were about the same price. They are both great bikes but if your buying a new one you need to buy what will make you happy. I did and I'mm glad I went with a RSV. Mine has every little whine if any. It has 32,000 miles on it and I am the fourth owner. I don't know what basket it has in it. I have a couple of good friends one with a 2005 and one with a 2006. Both have a noticable whine. I don't think either one has changed backets. They just turn the radio up. Whicever one you get you'll have a great bike so get out there and enjoy the ride. Harry:smile11:- 36 replies
