  1. These are not "machinist knife edge" but are "machinist straight edges" for checking flat and smooth surfaces, the knife edge only refers to the fact that they are ground to a point for greater accuracy.
  2. Most of my favorite songs have already been mentioned, but here's my input: Led Zepplin Black dog Heartbreaker Nirvana Smells like teen spirit Guns N' Roses Paradise city Knockin on heavens door Rainbow man on a silver mountain Black Sabbath Paranoid CCR Run through the jungle Then of course there is the local music I grew up with and had the pleasure to see live Rory Gallagher (haven't seen him mentioned on here so far...) Follow me Public enemy No.1 Philby Bullfrog blues Barley and grape rag Thin Lizzie Whisky in the Jar Boys are back in town Horslips (not a very talented band but just brings back great memories) Dearg Doom King of the fairies The high Reel Sword of light Trouble with a capital T
  3. Might be an idea to check the handlebar mounted controls for condensation. Similar thing happened to mine. Had to remove circuit board and dry it.....there are domed click switches on the board that the buttons press up against, if any water gets in there you will have to prise them up slightly to let any moisture out. Be very careful doing this they come off very easily and are a real pain to get back into position.
  4. Yes thanks Condor, I'm checking connections have found no faults so far. Thanks Mike have already downloaded the service manual. What's confusing me at the moment is that when I disconnect the speed sensor I do not get an error signal from the self diagnosis system. I have tried disconnecting the throttle position sensor and I do get a error signal (3 flashes from the engine management light). When I turn on the ignition the led speedo goes up and down and management light goes out as normal, so I'm thinking connections to speedo are OK. When I check the output to the sensor I get 12v between white and black/blue which seems to be correct according to wiring diagram, I am currently trying to trace the blue/yellow wire which seems to go to the speedo unit. I'm assuming that there is only one speed sensor, located near the final drive and that the connector for this is a white connector located behind the left hand side panel just below the fuse box. As I said any help would be appreciated....got my first speeding ticket a month ago and don't want another one
  5. Hi Guys, I could with a bit of advice here.I have a 2000 Royal star venture. My Speedometer stopped working the other day, I have checked fuses and all are OK. I'm thinking the problem is the speed sensor, how do you check these things? Other issues I'm having is indicators wont self cancel, cruise control wont work, engine management light comes on if I hit the rev limiter, I think all these issues can be attributed to a faulty speed sensor. I thought there was a self diagnosis system that checks the speed sensor but that doesn't seem to work even when I disconnect the sensor. Any advice would be much appreciated
  6. i agree with the other posts, doubt you'll get away without a carb strip down though, still worth a try. Petrol when left idle in a carb leves a type of varnish deposit which blocks up the jets. Best bet I reckon is total strip down, use a carb cleaner to soften the gunk, be carefull of rubber and plastic seals when using it. clean carb with compressed air, I wouldnt be too fond of using a piece of wire, jets can damage easily. give the bike a FULL service while your at it, that way you know where you stand with maintenance schedules.
  7. Thanks for all your comments, I've allways used metzlers on sportsbikes in the past, I believe hig4s to be correct about the problem with non German produced me880's. saddletramp I would like to know how the Metzlers compare with other tyres you may have used. BoomerCPO I agree with you about the 404's you say you also ran metzlers for a while did you change because of the chunking issue or did they just not perform as good as the michelin. I was inclined to go for the German produced Metzlers (brand loyalty I suppose) now am considering the Michelin's
  8. sorry only just saw this post, I havnt bothered to read threads. I'm pretty sure your problem is the starting circuit cut off relay. A short in the ignition switch will cause this to fry. hope this helps, again sorry for not seeing this earlier
  9. Sorry Goose I have to disagree with you on a few points most riders who push bikes fairly hard will have a preference for either left or right handers so your statement "This indicates the tire may not have been leaned as far over on turns to the right as it has for turns to the left, which is extraordinarily unusual for any rider who does not have physical disabilities of some sort." does not hold true, I in fact will quite often scrape the floorboard on the right hand side but never on the left and I am in no way physicaly disabled!!! touch mental maybe. Your second point that this wear never happens on a bike that is undamaged is also untrue, as a sportsbike rider with over 30 years experience, my front tyres always wore more on the right hand side I put this down to late braking on right handers keeping the front brake on while cranking over, bad pratice I know but if you're competent and confident you'll get away with it. Also dont forget you guys drive on the wrong side of the road. I do agree with your 3rd point though. But if this was the case i'm sure jarrejx would have mentioned it after all dont forget he has owned the bike for over a year. I also believe that all venture riders are very experienced they are definatly not the type of bike for a novice. For peace of mind though I would get the bike checked out
  10. pretty sure its nothing to do with centre stand, Kbay has a good point about road camber though if this was the case I would expect similar wear on rear tyre. but I think its more down to riding style, are you more comfortable on left hand turns and perhaps braking a bit later on these bends. I dont think its a alignment issue you would have more problems than just a worn tyre. Hard to see but tyre doesnt seem feathered or scrubed just worn down by someone enjoying themselves a little too much
  11. Hi Guys I know there is a lot of info on here about tyres, but I'm sorta comming at it from a different angle. I live in Ireland, I can be anywhere in the country in less than 3 hours so I'm not looking for a tyre that can put up mega mileage, in fact would be more than happy with 7,000 miles from a set. What is more important to me is grip, stability and wet weather handling I am running Dunlop 404's at the moment and they do little to inspire confidence on the wet greasy Irish roads. I have a choice of 3 tyres Metzeler: ME880 ( german made ), Michelin: Commander or Continental: Milestone CM2. I cant get Avon Venom over here for some reason. Any thoughts would be much appreciated
