At least you did it at a better time of year than me, I did mine the day before the rally in Kentucky that we were going to go to. Mine healed up mostly, but you are older than me was at that time, so maybe you gets to sit longer than me. I had a week off, so was on crutches for that week and then back to work. Maybe it will work as well or even better for you, after all, sounds like your knee has more experience. Heal fast bro, or the next thing you'll be looking for on the internet will be a Spyder.

Common thickness of OE valve shims
Marcarl replied to jfman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Actually as things wear, the cause of clearance issues, you would mostly be needing thicker shims rather than thinner ones, but in the real world it doesn't seem to work that way. It might even be possible that at some point, somebody, somewhere, could do the whole valve adjustment with just an exchange of shims already in the engine,,, just not very likely. Understand also that you are working on just one engine, but a shop will work on many different engines with many using the same size shim but different thicknesses. -
Common thickness of OE valve shims
Marcarl replied to jfman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I found mine varied from the 60s to the 80s. You might also be able to reuse your own shims in a different location. If you don't have the shim you need then maybe you can do like I do and others do as well, and that is to take some of your extra shims to a local MC shop for an exchange. They haven't charged me anything for exchange, bu that is not the case everywhere, but most likely they will be cheaper than buying new ones and maybe quicker and easier. -
Guess I am classified as a very responsible person,, c-ing as I seem to be responsible for almost anything these days. Now I get the credit for raising a stink,,,

Carby vent tubes
Marcarl replied to BigB1971's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The vent tubes just vent to the open air, so stick them down the back side of the engine away from anything hot, they should be long enough to reach below all mechanicals. -
Not a whole lot of replies I see so far. I would guess that a good diesel 10-30 would do just fine. Maybe it's because most of us would not ride at those temp, because it's either too cold to enjoy the ride, or too risky with the proper available traction on icy or snowy surfaces.

valve cover gaskets
Marcarl replied to kansa737's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Look for the 2nd gen gaskets, although I have never used them on a 1st gen I understand they are easier to work with than the 1st gen ones and they fit perfectly, and don't buy Chinese, OEM is the way to go. -
I'm very happy here in Ontario, away from the cities and heavy traffic. My biggest problem now is the step ladder.

Can't see what all the concern is here,,,, I would have no issue what-so-ever doing that,,, although I would need to see a couple of things a bit different. First there would have to be a 50' lane on either side of that track he rode on. Once that was in place I would consider the next requirement,,,, so on second thought, and to be sure you'all didn't get the wrong idea,, I would not even get close to that. Heck, I even get the webby-jebbies going over a bridge that goes over another bridge,,, and I have no love for the Mackinaw in Mich either.

Whose idea was this??

I have some experience with back pain, goes back 40 years or so, mine was mostly in the lower back but not always. I wasn't so gentle on my back when I was younger, so the results had to be dealt with in later years. Yep, the first was drugs, but my Dr. was not a drug pusher so sent me to a bone crusher,,,, that helped for a number of years but it always came back. The one day my bone crusher suggested a massage, not a masseuse, but a registered Massage Therapist seeing as he had one join his office recently. I had a friend who is a RMT and so went to see him,,,,, no more sore back. Makes sense. The muscle holds the bones in place and God made them things to work together. Put the muscle out of wack and the bones will follow suit resulting in a mis-aligned joint. Keep those muscle in line and tuned and things are much better.

The problem now becomes even for acute,,,, well at least for her,,, because after all, nothing happened and you were just blowing wind,,,, these old folks,, think they know everything!!!

PART needed for 83-93 Yamaha Venture XVZ1300
Marcarl replied to Royale Rider XVZ's topic in Want To Buy
Not easy to find,, but then you never know. Suggest to get some Plastifix or Plastex and you can fix that without anybody knowing that you did it. Might take a bit of practice, but once mastered it's easy enough, cheap and works good. -

Dangerous wobble at 55mph and above.
Marcarl replied to HunterMC's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Bearings too loose and you will get a wobble that can go to a tank slapper. Bearings too tight and the bike will want to do it's own thing seemingly, actually what happens is that the bike will no longer have it's own built-in 'come back to straight' because the drag on the steering head overcomes it. Did you know that a 2 wheel bike, left on it's own devices, actually will stay up straight and go straight forward as long as there is drive on the rear wheel? Pretty much impossible to demonstrate, but there have been occasions where it has happened. So if you get the steering too tight (which also acts as a steering damper of sorts) the bike will be restricted to self correct and come back to center. This will cause a wandering and a feeling of lost control for the rider. -

Now don't go getting him totally confused,,, it's bad enough as it is. -
Lost a fuse I bet. Check all fuses, both sides while installed, might be the answer. Actually, check the wires at both ends. The fuse holders get to be a problem after a few years, and yours would be way over due.

A man after my own heart,,,,, Fluid Film!!! use it for everything, but does not do well for a penetrating oil, unless you have a week to wait for it to work and you can keep things warm. On the truck fender issue though: couple of years ago I took my 08 Ram in for it's annual treatment at Rust Check, and after it was done I talked to the guy and asked him how come the rear fenders were bubbling, did he not get the product in there or what. He proceeded to remove the rear taillight and showed me all the 'oil' in there and said it was not for lack of Rust Check, but also couldn't enlighten me as to why the bubbles. This fall I got around to sanding down the bubbles and provide a fix before rot showed up. I found one (1) tinny hole under the paint, that was all, so the rust was not coming from inside the fender. What I did find was that the paint on the underside of the fender, the part that curves around to join the inner skirt, was loosing it's paint big time, and that moisture had creeped up the outside, and so got things rusty. So watch that part of the wheel-well, I know I will.
