  1. If you had EFI then there might not be a large issue, but carbs depend on vacuum for them to work. Loosing the cap would decrease the available vacuum in the carb and so screw things up. With reduced vacuum there would be reduced variance of pressure on the fuel bowl and so then nothing pushing fuel through the jets into the mixture process. When you felt it shake, you were probably running on just 2 cylinders.
  2. So where are you then,,, I've been waiting all day,,, NOT! Bring it over, and we'll see that you have a completely rebuilt scoot to ride,,, no issues,,,can't wait!
  3. That will kind of depend on a number of things. One is that I will be gone for the 17th and 24th. Two is why are you doing this You want to ride it or are you fixing it to sell and then how soon do you want it to be ready. Another thing to consider is how deep are you prepared to get into this machine. Don't want to scare you none at all,,, but: If you take the back wheel off and get into the spline and bearings and they show wear are you ready to replace them? $150-$200 Once the carbs are balanced and it still doesn't run right will you rebuild the carbs? $100- $300 If the charging issue won't go away do you want to replace the stator and or rectifier? $150-$250? Tires $300-$400? You can quickly spend a cool thousand. I\we don't mind helping out. that would be the fun part, and the scoot can sit here waiting for parts, that's ok too. But do you want to spend the money?
  4. If you are working on getting the bike ready for sale then you need to make sure that it is running properly, no misses, no leaks, starts well and doesn't smoke. Anything more than that is just spending money. I used to have a valve tool, but somebody went and broke it, but I suppose I could maybe borrow one locally if needed. The next thing that comes with that is to find replacement shims if needed, and that could be more difficult after hours. Now that I reasoned that out, I would just replace the cover gaskets and bolt seals, but they will have to be ordered in advance. Brake and clutch fluid is easy and can be quick, rear drive can be done when the back wheel is off, so not too big of an issue. Now if you plan to ride this machine, and the tires are old(er) then I can see the reason for replacement, if you are just getting ready for sale and the tires have decent tread, you are just spending money. You are asking $3200, which is a bit high, and that's ok. I would think that the final price would be between 2 and 2.5. Now if you figure the money you're thinking of investing in it at this point, there won't be much left to pocket. The bike will need to have 3 things going for it to sell: It needs to look good, which it does, and it needs to start well and run nice, and have ride-able rubber.
  5. Just what exactly were you thinking??? Tune up? Would you like the carbs rebuilt? Plugs changed? new plug wires? carbs synced? valves checked? valve cover gaskets? You can sure be into some big money depending on what you think need doing. On the other hand, take a day and visit a friend to see what might happen.
  6. Diesel pusher, check the tires for age, get up on the roof and check around the protrusions, make sure the furnace works, and the water heater and the A\C, take it for ride down a bumpy road, have it inspected for brakes, front end, brakes lines, exhaust and the such. Make sure the seats work as intended. It would be nice to have landing lights. You'll need lots of cupboard space, plan this out a bit, you'll be amazed as to how much you (your wife) will want to drag along. Food is important, don't forget to leave some room for food!!
  7. That would be Carl with a 'C'. Warmed up to operating temp usually isn't good enough, you need to ride it for few miles, so that the internals are right up there as well, and then check things right away, like in 5 minutes to be sure.
  8. Well we left a little early yesterday, about 9am. Ended up in Jordan about 10:30 and watched as our 2 boys and 2 of our girls helped the best team to get to first place. It was hot in the sun but very nice in the shade. They did well and Bethany Church was happy to have them on board. Marca and I then ended up at the Lazy Loon and the food was every bit as good as advertised. Didn't see much of the river on the way home though, somebody had turned off the big light a little early, must be trying to save hydro.
  9. Yep. you're on,,, haven't seen you for a while anyways, and could stand yo pick your brain a bit as well.
  10. Make sure that you not only check the battery posts, but also the connectors to the cables. Also check the positive to a ground other than the cable, so go to the body or engine, this will show if you have a good main ground. It's also possible that you have got used to things being dim and that now they are brightened up as they should be, but with the gauge pegging out I would think otherwise until I fully checked it out.
  11. I've had real good practice with that exercise,, lots of good excuses as well,,,, but never did it at maintenance day, or at an ice cream stop.
  12. Did you do the stator check when it was hot or cooled off?
  13. Stop by sometime.
  14. Saddlebum is busy, Midicat's 85 has charging issues, so we are on our own, headed for Jordan Ont to watch 4 of our kids play ball.
  15. Sure is a nice lookin scoot. 85s were the nicest and fastest and prettiest, and ran the best. No, not my old one, mine wasn't that pretty, but it did stay close, resides in the Welland area.
  16. As you get older you think you can still do everything you did when you were younger. Hey, I've driven fine all my life, never an accident, and I'm still just fine, haven't run into anything yet have I? That was my father-in-law. We needed to have his license taken away. Maybe some background there for you to use during your time with him and trying to map out the future. As mentioned: it's not him that I would worry about, but about the somebody else that also might be involved. Mention that if he does hurt himself he might end up in the hospital, maybe never get out and it would be extremely hard to see his girl friend from there.
  17. OK so here's the plan. No GPS, so we can get as lost as we want to. Leave home about 10am, head south, then east along the waterside, leave that when ever, spend some time fooling around in Effingham and district and then end up at the Lazy Loon for supper, hopefully early enough to enjoy the ride back home along the river. No idea how long this is going to take. As you can see, the table is set. http://lazyloon.on.ca/images/photo7.jpghttp://lazyloon.on.ca/images/photo5.jpghttp://lazyloon.on.ca/images/photo8.jpghttp://lazyloon.on.ca/images/photo12.jpg
  18. Hi Ready. We will ask for healing for her, but the best person to do that would be yourself. If you ask the Creator He will answer you. Get to know Him, it's not rocket science. Just admit that He is the one who holds everything in His hands and that you are living in the world He created, we screwed up, and His son came to claim back what is rightfully His. He died to get that done. All He asks is that you recognize Him,, you'll be glad you did for more than one reason. Prayers up!!!
  19. The starter clutch can make such a noise. Normally that only happens when it's engaged, but weird things happen. Once the engine is running one would think that it's no longer engaged, but hey, you never know. If it's broke funny things can happen. How does the starter sound when you start it? Just straws, grabbing at straws.
  20. That's what this is about,,, yes sir!!! who wants in on the game, then we'll see how we plan it.
  21. Marca and I are planning to do some riding on Monday, ending up somewhere for supper. Not just sure yet as to where, so that is up in the air, not sure if there are some who care, but I thought it would be nice to share. Leaving home about 10 in the morning. You can ride along or join us for the eating Just let me know who we might be meeting. It's then I can do some planning So all can be served in the ending.
  22. Can't see me there, guess we need more pictures!!!
  23. Well that's one way to clean up the left overs without having to take them to the dump. Me thinks though that a set of lights would be helpful. Turning corners would be a trick and a half, and keeping the front wheel on the ground might present it's own issues with how high he's got the hitch mounted. Trouble waiting to happen I think!
  24. Don't worry none boss, we can look after ourselves,,, not saying we'll come out it in good shape, but the looking part is easy enough. Enjoy your time away, and don't get wet!!
  25. Maybe they want the parcel back?????
