SPYDER Man SPYDER Man, won't be seen on 2 wheels again!
Marcarl replied to flyday58's topic in Watering Hole
Took out the cat and just replaced it with SS pipe. Lights up front are OEM and work just fine, no issues there. I did add more LEDs to the rear, and that was just a matter of choice, had to make it mine I guess. Clam shell bags tend to loose their innards before you can slap the lid closed and if you get that done right, when you open it everything comes spilling out. Now if you do it right,, not bad, but you really shouldn't pull on the bottom cloth and expect the rest to stay put. Air horns were a donation from Wizard765.They are now hidden in beside the frunk. Yes, I made my own belt tensioner at half the price of Lamonster, and it works well. Not sure how the 15-17 models are with vibration, but for the 14 it sure helps. It takes a bit of adjusting to get the back wheel aligned and the tension spot on. I made my own setup for alignment. 2 magnetic lazer levels, a special cone to insert into the front hubs and a piece of pine 1x4. Then just to figure out how to measure it all. Worked better than the dealer. Also made my own rear wheel balancer. Found that the MC wheel balancers were to light to handle the weight of the rear wheel and with a car balancer the shaft was too thick. So I spent an afternoon designing my own, That works good as well. If you want pictures your going to have to wait until I get things out of storage in the next week or so and get to work on the scoot. Then I'll see what I can do. -
SPYDER Man SPYDER Man, won't be seen on 2 wheels again!

Back in 2014 we bought a Spyder and sold the Venture. We test rode an 08 2 years before but were not impressed with the constant vibration, but with the 3 cyl that is mostly gone. Today, although I kind of miss the 85, I would not go back, Spyders are a way to much fun to go back to 2 wheels, but then so is VR.org so we're not leaving here anytime soon. Comments: Kenda tires are junk, get some Kumos. Sway bar needs to be replaced with a heavier aftermarket one. Rear brakes wear sooner than the front, rotten things are not cheap either. Lots of heat from the cat converter, so we took it off. It needs more lights, so we did that. Horn is wincey, so air horns were installed Alignment has been an issue in the past. If it don't track straight on it's own, it needs an alignment. Not necessarily done at factory or the dealer. Once it's right, WOW!! Oil change every 15,000km, but it takes a while, Get the filters on e-bay, much cheaper. Don't over do the tire pressures, go by recommend settings. Note; if rear tire wears in the middle, add more air, maybe a pound or two, don't take some out, wrong move!! It takes a bit to work on these things, but once you have the covers off it becomes easier, something like a GW. 4 areas of storage is somewhat handy, but the clam shell side cases,,,, well they are clam shell. Any questions? ask away. Goes like stink and uses about as much gas as a 2nd gen, maybe a wee bit more, but nothing like a trike. -
Just got to see this. Met him one I think, but I noticed he was always ready to help when help was needed, and even if it wasn't needed. Guess we all got to face that part of our lives as well, and from I have read, he even did that well. May we all have such a tribute when we move on. Blessings to those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Wow girl, you two went through a lot. I guess we all like to think that we are going to live forever, but then reality sets in. Yep, we spend time together, learn to love each other and it all comes to an end. Losing a loved one can be tough and kind of leaves a person hanging, but at the time we don't know what it is that we are hanging on, or onto, so we are kind of in a limbo, until we find The Source. Blessing to you all as you wander through the next stage and re-discover a joy in your life. Thanks for being there for the others, they needed your support, and you gave them what you could, that makes you a friend worth having. What is your time-line for the layover in Toronto?

Best do a check on the RR as well. With so few miles and already the 2nd stator, there maybe something making them go bad. Could be that the PO wanted to install a higher output one, or the original was a bad one, but it won't hurt to check it out.
-
No need for a puller if you are changing the stator. Now if you want to change the rotor to replace the starter clutch,,,, you WILL need a puller and time and rags and a basket, and a new vocabulary.
-
So done. Thanks

First thing to fix and eliminate guess work, would be the fuse block if it's still the original. Clean and check the battery connections and the ground connections as well as to make sure the ends are properly and tightly attached. Once that is done, you will have a better base to start from and may solve your present issue.

Thanks Larry. Not good news at all. That means that 100 miles of BRP will be off limits with all the loose gravel and messy tar, unless they devise a new system for doing it. We did some roads here in Brant County last year, and one would not really have known it had it not been for the 'loose gravel' signs, so it can be done somehow.

Wow you2!!! Finally the plans get to have some legs, or wheels if you so desire. Good for you. We just might, that is a very little might, be in the Badlands area in July, if we do we'll let you know. Right now it's still in the tumbler wishing to get chosen I guess. Blessings on your travels.

Some things I might suggest to check out. - have you got the right airfilter and in place. - are the diaphragms seated properly, no holes. - are the slides moving as they should - are the enrichment valves returning to closed, or are 2 of them stuck (choke) - are the floats at the proper levels. -
That didn't take long,,, who let you out? More: 1st photo? 2nd photo is Saddlebum again, but who is the other rider, and just to make it hard, who has their hand up behind Saddlebums head?
-
So who is this? Got more interesting photo's if you can guess this one, and if it's you,,,, don't say a word. We'll see how well your friends know you.

What the Heck
Marcarl replied to SpencerPJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Starter switch has been known to cause these issues, can get sticky. -
Best not to tinker with either, you never know what calamity comes next.

Funny how things change as we get older,, I sure like my snooze in the afternoon,, and after supper,, and watching the news,,, and when I wake up,,,, oh sorry, you were changing tires??? don't have time for that now anymore, I'm just too busy with important things.
-
Keep in mind the the bigger the gap, the later the timing, not a whole lot mind you, but then at 5000 fires per minute there is not a whole lot of time between them. I'm not really sure if this actually comes into play or if it does have any effect. At 1800rpm the plug would fire 30 times per second, I would say just looking at it that would be constant.

Interesting thread, and I already knew about the instant freeze thing. Couple of comments though, one about bottled water. Caution with the extras you drink when you do this, the plastic tends to leak it's ingredients into the water, especially if it gets heated some. The other is the freezer temp. We have to deal a lot with temperatures and frozen is very important to us. Freezing something will not entirely stop the spoiling process, it only slows it down, so in time, (a long time) spoilage does occur. The best temperature to prevent spoilage is 0 degress F or lower, but lower increases the potential of freezer burn, so actual drying in the freezer. So the best overall standard is 0 degrees. 20 degrees F will allow you food to continue to spoil, howbeit at a slow rate. As an added note, you can't always tell if the food is spoiled by it's smell, for some pathogens do not give off an odor, and those same pathogens could be the type to create a toxin that cannot be rendered harmless by cooking.

My gess is that you'll have to beef up the frame some, this adds weight as well. Now also consider the stress point. You beef up the frame for the last 10' or so and that will no longer give way, but now the stress point is at the front edge of the beefed up section, so you'll need to fix that, which puts the stress point further forward, until you get to the ball at the front. All that weight at the back is going to like to do it's own bouncing up and down. You'll need to 'fix' the frame, front to rear. My son likes to get a cargo trailer and then convert to a dual purpose. Summer time for camping, winter time for job site. They use an air bed and movable outside cupboards with some built-in cupboards at the front. NO need for a furnace, they use an electric heater seeing as most campsites have electric anyways, no wash room, again most places have washrooms and showers, so for the inside all they want is a bed, fridge and storage. Really quite simple and inexpensive. Consider what items you really want, rather than what would be nice, so gather your thoughts and start with a bare trailer and then start adding things and think about how you can make the necessities dual purpose, or store-able. In the end it might surprise you how much room you really need and how short you could go. Like, the toy section could become a bedroom in less than 10 minutes.

It was a bit windy here as well, didn't go dark though, at least not for us. I understand it was the women's day off and they were outside mostly, so that explains it i suppose.

Sometimes we're like kids and need to be told more than once. I really don't think it my fault though, I think Bongo put my brain in gear for this one, I think he mentioned something along this line in another thread, I think. In the process I think we all learned a lot. I'm going to have to review the thread to decipher exactly what it was that we learned, but hey eh? -
Thanks for your prayers, we all need the input of the Master everyday. Back to you as well, you are added to the list.
