  1. The photos are since my accident of 6 months ago. I still am healing in some parts of my body. I still have my wrecked RSV parked in the garage which I bought back from the insurance company. While I was sitting on my butt for a month recovering, I purchsed a BMW because of what I read about ABS brakes, tires, safety gear, etc during the many hours that I sat in front of my PC surfing the net. The BMW has non-linked ABS brakes front & rear. I locked up both wheels on my RSV and layed it down vs hitting the car that violated my right of way and pulled out in front of me. I visited the accident site and there are 2 definative skid marks in the asphalt from both of my RSV's tires from the attempted panic stop. Again, I had another emergency stop last week and survived! I was at about 35-40mph, when a cop in a car pulled into my right of way at an intersection in the downtown business section which has blind spots at evey corner due to buildings built right up to the sidewalks. I heard the siren screaming, but could not tell where it was or what emergency vehicle it was since the sound was bouncing off the buildings. I had a green light and was coming down an exit ramp into right turn only lane. I knew I had only 1 more block to go to turn, since I drive this every day on my commute to my job. I was able to come to an immediate stop, even though I visualized that I was going to slide across the intersection and into the car because I panic stopped and applied both brakes and was anticipating a wheel lock up. I think the cop thought that I was about to hit him too from the freeked out look on his face. But this BMW bike came to a surprisingly fast stop - which I was very happy that it did!
  2. I bought front directionals which have 2 element socket for the 1157 bulb and the red lenses and sold my rear used pair on ebay and came out as cheap with a better conversion. I did this for my VT1100 Honda Sabre and my Yamaha Venture. My commute bike is a 1150 beemer RT (full fairing) and I replaced the front & rear single element sockets with 2 element automotive 1157 sockets for $3.50 each from auto parts store.
  3. My 1/2 helmet is so much cooler than the fullface. It saved my head with road rash all around it. It is now retired. While I was on my butt for weeks healing, I spent every day online reading articles & forums and watching videos. No guarantee that a full helmet will save my face, but after seeing the broken & mangled faces of those who chose to NOT protect their faces - I have retired the 1/2 helmet and will wear the full or I will not ride. BTW, as far as I know, there is no FLIP -UP helmet that is SNELL approved. DOT really is a very low standard. If there is a FLIP-UP SNELL approved helmet, I would definately like to know which one it is!
  4. The reason I am reading this thread is result of googling TOUR MASTER VENTURE AIR MOTORCYCLE PANTS. I am 4 1/2 weeks from a slide on the asphalt. My leathers & helmet saved my skin 360 all around. Only tear in jacket was double stitched seam @ right elbow but no rash to elbow. Something penetrated my Left elbow but jacket is OK there. Armor @ the leather elbows would have pevented my puncture wound and prevented both elbows from hurting so bad from the impact & turning several different colors this past month! Both my legs had extensive road rash but the knees got the worst. I am still bandaging the right knee. My new ankle high "riding" boots were NOT at all adequate since I have a busted up left foot because the boot got ripped off! I ordered a black/white leather "racing" jacket with armor and it looks great! But it is going back. Not 1 seam is double stitched. I set both jackets together and see where the new one might fail me some unfortunate day and maybe even worse and it weights a ton! Now I have a Tourmaster summer weight air mesh with armor and liners on the way & was looking at several air mesh over-pants. Just want to stay away from any polyester/plastic products which will melt into the skin - and there are lots of those out there too! As I sit here on my butt and read and read and read and search I am upgrading all my riding gear and will be using the ARMOR!

Everyone here certainly talks with experience - but - in so far as being in control AFTER the crash or lay-down I will say this from my latest experience - my thoughts were, "This looks familiar - I'm fuc***g going to have one hellava crash!" Then I saw ashphalt 2" from my nose going by my face in a blur! I remember seeing my hands still with the gloves on but looked like they had tumbled in a hay field with dead grass all over them. Next thing I recall was being placed in the stretcher by the ERU team. When I read the police report putting the time together I was out cold for 30 to 40 minutes. Totally not in any position to think about tuck & rolling or bailing off the bike. I think the only way that any of us get good at anything is with practice. And I am not real enthused about practicing crashing, even though that apparently is a part of our chosen sport/hobby! I never had a bad feeling about the person who pulled out into my path. I do not even know who it is except for the police report. I have to admit that when I am a cager, as a cyclist, I even fail to see a bike at times. So knowing that, I made a commitment to myself that if I was going to get upset at every cager who drove stupid, I would never enjoy riding. So for me to enjoy riding I know that I am the superior intelligence and the cagers are the lower species. Then I just drive that way - hey hey - most of the time. I flash my lights, hit my air horns and every once in awhile I have to give them a little piece of my mind with some "hand language". Then I calm down and consider the source!
  6. What would you do different in cycle wreck? My boss called to check up on me to see how I was coming along. I told him that since my lay-down 4 weeks ago, I have had plenty of time to think & watch cycle mishaps on "you tube", watch safety equipment demos and read up on latest safety gear. He asked me, "What would you have done different?" . . . and I told him. But I am interested to know, did you learn anything from your mishap and "What would you have done different?" . . . if you have had a lay-down, motorcycle mishap, accident, wreck.
  7. Not sure I posted correct place - I thought there was a "other" bikes category . . . ? Wondering if you have any experience installing/using accent lights or ground lights on your BMW for "accent" or safety reasons and your opinion. I have the BMW RT & was wondering where to put them. They worked great on my cruiser. Not sure how or where they would fit because of the fairing?
  8. I recently took quite a skid down the ashpalt road with my RSV on me instead of me on it! Ouch! I was wearing riding (hiking) boots and my left ankle is twisted and the foot is broken because the boot came off. Boots in good shape. The jacket was a $250 classic style cycle of good quality leather which has road rash all over it especially at the elbows. Something still penetrated it and into my elbow. The sewn seams were ripped open on one arm. Jacket trashed. The leather gloves were in the box. I wore instead a lighter fabric glove and my hands & fingers took a beating (better than nothing - at least hands were not bare!). Gloves trashed. The helmet was a 1/2 shell. It has road rash on all 4 sides. My face has 1 small scratch (lucky!) Paramedics cut up the long legged pants - what was left of them. Ended up with major road rash on both lower legs and some on the butt. I will be buying a better boot, new jacket, full helmet that opens in front, throw away my open fingered gloves. What I would like to know if you have any experience with the Cordovan and/or the Kevlan systems riding jackets, I would appreciate your opinion. Thinking of them instead of the leather only because it gets hot in FL behind a fairing & especially in traffic!

  10. Not bad for a heavy "touring type" bike - from what I've read over the years, Harleys handle pretty well for their size. I think the competitors on these flicks are the above average rider. The best bikes I've had in the past that loved to be leaned over in the turns & twisties were my 650 twin Yamaha, 650 twin BSA, boxer BMW, 750 twin Norton, 750 triple Yamaha. Bikes that I have owned that fight me to lean were my 883 Sportster, 750 Honda CB, 500 CB, and my present RSV. In between were my so so Kawaski 800 Vulcan & Vulcan 1600, & VT1100 Honda.
  11. Cerviperus - this your 1st bmw? I got my 1st in 76 a used blue 74 with 1,800 mi on it for $2,200. Took a 2,000 mi round trip with the little lady on the back. Had a full white Vetter fairing & bmw bags & rack. Just this week bought my 2nd bmw 1150rt police. Looking forward when it arrives in 2 weeks! Any decent bmw forums out there? Found a few but none are as geat as this one!
  12. Jimbob - you are correct sir! Guess it, or civilian version, is not sold in USA - don't see it Honda site. A bunch of Japanese sites pop up when googled. Can't recall my 750 CB ever handling that good - was top heavy - even though it run flat out very fast and smooth!
  13. good driving skills being demonstrated - difficult to do on a RSV tourer type. I thought Honda too but on ST the valve heads poke out of the fairings also these do not have a shaft drive.

  15. Since I layed my RSV down a few weeks ago, the little lady does not want to ride with me anymore - so I got me a bit** to take her place - when I can ride again, that is!
  16. Jimbob - I like your reasoning. I thought that I read that BMW changed their linked brakes where only the front lever actuates both brakes. It makes sense. I often wondered if hitting the rear pedal would not work in the biker's favor - like you said - on a turn - if linking was actuated by the rear brake. Sounds like ABS on both brakes and, if one wanted a linked system, to have it only actuated by the front lever.

I am curious to know what you have experienced with the ABS and/or linked braking systems (either with ABS or without) on other bikes that you have driven (since the RSV does not have linked or ABS brakes).   19. I had to change my "signature" from "never" to "one" accident! Locked up rear wheel in panic on my 01 RSV. Slid about 250' on the asphalt per accident report. Not sure if it would have been better to have ABS or linked brakes which might have prevented the lock up & the lay down. Otherwise I might have hit the bastur* who pulled out in front of me and ended up hitting the car instead and sending over the bars & into the sob! My RSV has about $8K damages and I ended up with road rash and busted up ankle. Thank God I had enough sense to wear my helmet, leather jacket and gloves (which are all trashed!) or else I might not even be able to type this!

  21. and then there is concern of blowing the oil seals out with too much air and ending up with more problems & expenses. I read here many times about the rear shock being not adequate and failing prematurely and I wonder if much or ALL of these leaking shocks are not the result of being overinflated!!?? with "o" air pressure in my 3 shocks I think my bike rides just fine and IF the rear shock starts leaking it will not be because I put too much air in it.
  22. Guys - got a couple questions fer yas - if yas be so kind to tells me question number 1 - what is big deal about balancin shocks whether front or rear? I never had a bike - till I got my big ass haul ass red yamahachi street screemer - that "needed" balanced shocks. Now that I got me a fancy ride I gotta waste my hard earned beer money on spensive shock inflaters and air measurrers thingamajigs? As far as I know all mine are "0" pressure so that would qualify them as bein "balanced" - correct? - since they are all equal? (0+0+0+0=0) And another question about my fancy ride's tool kit question number 2- maybe it is in the instruction manual somewheres, but I never read them danged things except to check on sompthin, - but what is the air guage for that comes in the tool kit with the wierd numbers on er? I gave it as a present to my Auntie Sue and got me a 99 cent walmart one which I knows da numbers. Thanks fer edjumacatin me on dem dere issues!
  23. sooooo----here is my contribution how to take the headlight bulb out - as already posted elsewhere - - when you get the plug off & the rubber guard off - the long needle nose can be used to swing the springed clip off to the left THERE IS NO _ NO _ "twisting to the left" as posted elsewhere! You pop the spring off the retainer with your finger or use the long needle nose or a straight instrument such as a screw driver. It pops off at the top of the bulb and swings to the left. Then the bulb almost falls out. It is simple but untill you get in there and try this most "instructions" mean nothing. After trying to "TWIST" the bulb - as instructed elsewhere - I almost broke the bulb. It does not TWIST!! Pull the u shaped spring free and the bulb almost falls out - hope this helps others!
