  1. Have to agree. I couldn't detect any change in running with the Jason mod. Look for exhaust leak first.... Extra air will cause popping. Some popping on decel is normal due to lean mixture from factory. Emissions.
  2. The P.O. put them on. I don't remember what he said they were. I think they are the Baron's.. 1 1/2 inch risers. Just make sure they have metric bolts. https://www.denniskirk.com/baron-custom-accessories/1-1-1-2-in-riser-extensions-ba-7430-00.p595937.prd/595937.sku I had to mount the rubber bumpers that went between the bars and the inner fairing with a glue as the fit was now loose. I glued them to the inner fairing. I did not need to extend the cables and no issues with the throttle cables either. Note: Pretty sure they were Barons....
  3. You might be able to do the math based on rake and trail published by Yamaha, then figure out what 1 inch lowering of the front forks in the triple tree would do. That's what I lowered mine down...1 inch.
  4. I honestly wouldn't worry to much about the motor. These things are almost bullet proof. More often than not, a V4 that has been sitting will be just fine...only needs fuel system cleaned up...especially the carbs and fluids changed. Other than that, they do seem to run forever. But do the compression check for peace of mind...it's always good to establish a maintenance baseline on a used machine. Good for you, good for the bike.
  5. I lowered the front end of my 2nd gen to make it a little more nimble in slow speed stuff. Left rear stock. I feel she tracks better, too. I kept the wide stock size front tire (others go to a 130 front instead of a 150 stock) and glad I did as she is quite stable in wind gusts and large trucks blasting at me! If you look at the profile of a 2nd gen, even though they say around 6 inch clearance, she will drag some metal through a corner, especially if you are on the throttle and she squats down like she's supposed to. But that's OK. Dragging won't hurt you or the bike unless you hit heavy metal. On my 89 1st gen, I've dragged something underneath going around a left hand decreasing radius turn. I think it was either the center stand or the left muffler. Not sure, just know I was into the turn with engine pumping, wife in back sound asleep and the turn radius decreases. It was one of those "oh ****" moments. I just learned her over more and crossed my mental fingers. Of course, she pulled right through the turn (thank you Shinko 230's) but there was a slight jolt and a scrapping noise... then we were upright on into the next turn. The noise woke up my wife! I found out later she was asleep...I had no idea. So yes, both generations of Ventures can drag metal.... BTW, I'm not normally an aggressive rider. I try to read each corner, especially on a twisty 2 lane. I took the 2nd gen down hill on the Devils Highway, rt 191. About 100 miles of serious curves...speeds at 25 mph or less. Like the Dragon, but if you go off the road, you die. Most of Rt191 has drop offs...and they go down a ways! I never scraped anything on that ride, despite the curves. I was probably to scared to go fast enough!!
  6. My biggest threat to MPG's is the wrist twisting grin that happens ever time I want to enjoy the rush of speed! Darn it...
  7. @sanderjack, What happened with your friend's RSV?
  8. Neil, I would love to do the Beartooth...that is on my bucket list for sure... Thoughts about the camera. Mounted up that high on your ram...I'm wondering about shakes and wind pressure. Wind will kill your audio and bend the ram mount/other stuff you are attached to, back a touch. Did you test the mounting place? Did you test behind the windshield as well? If so, your plus or minus impressions. (I ask because I still haven't found an "ideal" place to mount either of my 2 cams...). I spent over 40 years shooting film and video...maybe I'm to picky! If you run 720P HD at 60fps, what do you think a 32 or 64gig SD card will give you for length of movie. Do they give a chart or something based on their compression and processor? I understand you are powering the camera off the bike...so battery is not an issue. How well does the stabilization work? Optical or electronic? Does it take some of the viewing screen real estate when engaged? What viewing angle do you like best for riding? That's it for now....and hope you have time before you ride off to get back to me. In the meantime...wishing you a safe and great ride! P.S. I ask about 720P because it's my favorite for riding. Still true HD, but saves memory card space and easier to edit and view...
  9. I heard from @cowpuc and Tippy tonight. Yes, they are on the road and heading West. He wanted me to tell youse guys and gals they are fine and screaming across the Land heading for California, hoping to get there before daughter has the newest grandkidlet! Here is his text to me: "Hey you lop-eared criss-crossing the states varmint! Puc here! Cell service is very dicey but these little lop-eared varmints are running all over the place! Try to get on the site several times no can do with this goofy phone! Please pass on this info. Bonneville Salt Flats not ready for Speed week in my humble opinion. Still wet after heavy storms. Camped two nights 5 miles out on the salt. Salt was c a k e d 1 in thick on soles of shoes! Very nice camping though! P i c k e d up a couple extra copies of 2018 Sturgis Rally books and tour Maps of area if anyone would like one please PM me and I will send them when I get home. Pregnant daughter in Sacramento is ready to burst! She isn't due till September but may go anytime! She has got that wonderful glow that only comes with childbearing! Rain started at Menomonie on Wisconsin border and didn't stop until halfway across Minnesota! California was dry and just starting to get hot when we left!" +++++++ They will touch base with us after they get settled down in California... Tippy.... And Puc... Now I turn you back to your scheduled mayhem...
  10. Well...my guess was accurate ...sorry. I understand what you are saying with respect to motorcycles but my comment was regarding the Chrysler Lean Burn System. Chrysler was the leader in Lean Burn technology. Much of what they did is in use today...making cars far more environmentally sound. LB technology can bring air/fuel ratios as high as 65:1. Hondas have run 22:1...instead of the optimum 14.6:1. Biodiesels (the new engines)are also up there in lean burn tech. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean-burn Interesting stuff...but 30-40 years ago...it didn't fly. The tech wasn't there...
  11. Woke up to early this morning. Saw that it was 72 degrees and cloudy. Whoo Hoo! Riding time. Took a little jaunt down to my favorite 50's diner, 17km from Mexico. Sun rising.... RSV 6am breakfast.... Nice morning for a ride. I do like our Monsoon Season. May get warm and humid, but nights and mornings can be really nice! OH: Sausage, bacon, ham, green chilis, mushrooms and spinach. One price...load it up with whatever you want.
  12. I left a message on Tippy's cell. Just a little "hi" message. I'll let you know when I get a return...
  13. Chrysler Cordoba. 318. Lean Burn with the bakelight carb. Fantastic car...shame Chrysler had to saddle it with the great 318 and lousy emissions crap. 18:1 air/fuel ratio??? I loved mine except for the engine.[/color]
  14. I gather that all oils made today are very good...but my issue with Penzoil was in the late 80's. I thought it was a good oil and I used it exclusively in my Van from mile #1 . Well..the 318 heads showed it was crap. Ah well....it doesn't surprise me. I still like Yamalube 20-50 dino oil. Seems to make both of my Ventures run well. The VStar 950T ran it too, and it was a peppy, fuel efficient little motor! 11K miles and still ran like it was brand new. Just wish it wasn't so expensive. The RSV ran very well despite the wind on Rotella T6 on this last cross country trip. Shifted well despite the heat. But a bit more noise from the engine/transmission on the T6 than on Dino. Next, I'll try Mobile 1 and then WalMarts house brand of synthetic in 20-50. Speaking of oils and grease...small hijack here: During another WallyWalk....found my favorite trailer bearing grease. Decided to read the label. Whoa. No wonder it's been great for all the times I've drowned the wheels and it just works! A grade 2 lithium complex grease! It really does stick despite the heat we have here...I've trailered my boat across the desert to San Diego and Marina Del Ray in LA, in 110 degree heat and bearings stayed at ambient temp. I've been really happy with this stuff. I'm going to get some additional tubes for use in the rear end and wheel bearings of both scoots. I bet it will be good stuff there too!
  15. I don't know about QS, BUT, the oil that got my 318 van engine after 160K miles was Penzoil. The mechanic who took the heads off and repaired them said he blamed the oil since it was paraffin based oil. Wax. Don't know if that's true, but I haven't used it since and have had no problems with other vehicles for over 600K miles.
  16. Dion, Does sound like you might be a touch underinflated with max pressure being 49 pounds. Try upping the pressure a few pounds at a time....say 45lbs next. Or, try it at Max pressure then work down just to see if that helps. I've run my Shinkos within 2lbs of max on both bikes (40-42 pounds) and had no problems.
  17. Hi Steve, Darn....I'm down in Green Valley for the next week. Otherwise I would be happy to drop by and look at it. We do have some members in the Valley but I don't see them on here very much. You might also post this on the Facebook site (if you haven't). I won't be up there until after next weekend...about 8 days away. If you still need someone then, PM me or call... my contact info is here on site and I can make a run up for you. david
  18. If the rear brake system doesn't come back up after some work...look closely at the rear caliper. It's probably crudded up. I took mine apart and decided to replace with an R1/R6 caliper. Bolted right on. Much better braking now... Good luck and keep us posted...
  19. No. The problem with LED bulbs is most of them don't have the proper light cut off for the low beam. And the high beam is left to go wherever the bike lens throws it. These bulbs should not be DOT approved for auto use. And shouldn't be used by us either. I put in the Broview. It was DOT approved. The light cut off is flat and very wide on low beam. It's reach is better than the halogen that came stock with bikes as well. High beam is a projector like pattern that really goes down the road. I ordered 2 and put one in my 89 and one in my 05 RSV. Both look great at night. I understand from Gary Hedburg, a new member here who lives nearby, that he's going with the OPT7 FluxBeam bulb. It looks like it throws the proper light pattern. When he get's his in, hopefully he'll let us know how it goes...
  20. I thought of that too. But the 1st thing to hit the ground if I go down is going to be the lights and the hiway pegs. Rather not deal with that...but not planning on going down either. We know how that works! Been gone for 2 weeks...have to deal first with replacing the bearings/hubs on the Yukon after 206K miles. I might be buying a travel trailer in the next few weeks and need to run to Knoxville Tennessee to pick it up if the deal goes through. So gotta get the truck running. Funny, the dealer is across the interstate (I-40) from where I've stayed multiple times. The Best Western Strawberry Inn east of Knoxville. Small world.
  21. Crank the tire pressure to max? Will that flatten the sidewall a touch?
  22. We are back in Southern Arizona. Around my house only 106 today. We left Phoenix at 115. That dry heat thing is for real. Can you imagine 100 degrees with 90% humidity? That's serious heat. I'll take 110 or under with less than 10% humidity and I'm happy. Unfortunately, it's now our monsoon season. So humidity is up, dew point is up and that lowers the heat. But the overall effect is worse than a dry June 110! But I look at this time of year as my "winter"...my non-riding season. Oh sure, I get out for a few hours from maybe 6am to 8am, once in a while. And that's enough for me. Most of the time, I do my annual maintenance on the scoots this time of year. Then I can ride the rest of the year....9 or 10 months. And that reminds me...next time in Phoenix, I need to dump the fuel for the sailboat motor. We won't be going back out until October...and that's too long for this crap gas we have to sit...
