  1. I made the mistake of turning on the ignition to check something and when I turned it off I turned the key all the way to the parking light and did not notice it because it was light out and I didn't take the key out. Killed the battery but it recharged and held. Original 2004. Some batteries do short between cells and give you a short charge. Some auto parts stores (Advance Auto) will test it for free.
  2. I took a ride to Front Royal through Shenandoah National Park and stopped for the night at a hotel where us route 250 intersects by interstate 64. My plan was to continue on down the Blue Ridge Parkway but the weather called for rain that way for next 2 days so I decided to head back towards Pittsburgh. I recognized us250 to be the same road that is by my favorite lake in west virginia and away I went. What a great twisty turny road through the mountains with great scenery and good road. Chatted with some other bikers at a historic fort on top of a mountain pass who told me if I liked 250 then I'd love rt 33. They made a loop of both roads. Lots of things to do and see in the area also. I'm looking forward to a trip summer to check it out. Any Mountaineers familiar?
  3. prayers sent for all.
  4. I use quick detailer spray. Great for smudges and such and light dust. With micro fiber cloth it leaves no lint. But yeah, if really dirty wash it. Car wash soap won't remove your wax the way dish soap does and still sheets the water off pretty well.
  5. I just told my wife the other day when another can opener quit working right that I'd like to have my p38 from nam.Simple is best.
  6. I did a valve adjustment and got it all back together and running but now my choke handle will only pull out about a 1/4 inch, not enough to really work. While the carb was off, all I really did to it was spray it with carb cleaner. I did move the pistons in and out with my finger while spraying it. Did I do something wrong? I can't see anything interferring with it on the outside. Any ideas?
  7. Goose all of your tech posts are nicely detailed. I used to work on all my own cars back before they covered the motor with hoses, canisters, this that and the other, so it's been awhile since I dealt with valves. Thanks for your help.
  8. You're right , I had the wrong TDC. I was on the exhaust stoke. I put a wooden dowel in the spark plug hole and cranked till I got TDC again and sure enough there was the marking in the hole. Does anyone know how to get a wooden dowel out of the cylinder head now? Just kidding. Thanks for all the help. This was the first time I did a post and for the computer dummy I am it was harder to figure out than the valve adjustment. Thanks Joe
  9. I followed Goose's directions from his post and everything was great until I got to measuring the gap. I did like the manual and Goose said, timing mark in window to get TDC, and then the cams were pointing away from each other at about 5 and 7 o'clock. Problem is they are still in contact with the shims and you can't measure it. I cranked the engine a little further and the exhaust valves were free and intake was pushed open. Can you just measure the gap when the cam lobes are pointing up? It seems the round portion of the cam should be the same all the way around and the valve closed unless the cam is touching it.
  10. When I set TDC in the observation hole and try to measure valve clearance on #1 cylinder the cams are facing away from each other at about 5 and 7 o'clock but they are still depressing the shims. When I roll the cam and watch, I can see the shims rise and the cam finally having a clearance on exhaust valves. The bike ran fine so I know it's not out of time. What is the cam lobe's position in relation to the shim supposed to be to measure the clearance?
