Rear Crash Bar Reflector
IronMike replied to lshafer's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Well I have a set, but I am keeping them, I took mine off because in wind tunnel testing I noticed how much they drag wind and cause turbulence So I replaced them with HD's! They are curved to fit the bar!!!! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/44c97279-fcb4-4648-b9b2-159155160f42_zps89218607.jpg This is the front! And maybe zoom on this, http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/20130829_150247_zpsb04806f6.jpg Or below you can maybe see, but I ran High intensity LED's in RED in the holes to cover up the index holes left by the Yami Reflectors, they shine on the bag and it looks bad azz at night and increases visibility, and THATS another reason I went HD reflectors, more surface area and visibility over the Bulky Yami stock ones. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/20130822_232606_zps867dfb0e.jpg When I was doing up my ROADSTAR I wanted same thing as you Venture Reflectors, I nearly had a heart attack also when I seen the price. What you see here are simply HD part numbers, you walk in, look at a bike, pick the year and order up. $5.00 each, they stick on with 3m tape included and ready to rock! For $20 your problem is solved. Or less if you just need two. I don't have the part numbers HERE but there are Out in the shop, but you don't really need them, they are 4 different numbers, there is a Left and right. No big deal just go order up and keep it all HD! The Venture reflectors have index holes to keep them from twisting and they would need to be drilled or 3 m taped to hold in place. If you twist my arm I'll ship you my red ones Half what you can get them for, But I think this is a better fix for you. They can be removed easily in the future with Fishing string, and they are a lot less wind resistant, FreeBird has also jumped ship as you may know, and he says Lets keep it all HD! So walk in, look on the floor show them what you want and order up. Notice how they are mounted as there is a left and right and an up side and a downside. Don't think it really matters. Disclosure, IronMike does claim this MOD as original! I was keeping it secret. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/20130823_001747_zps39ef29ab.jpg The high intensity LED at night from the side, Picture does no justice really. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/20130822_232624_zpsefce7d31.jpg And from the rear, Y'all thought I was BS ing when I ranted about changing your lighting to be seen in the Ohio Trooper hit Biker thread. Anyways, Not meaning to Jack your thread, it was a while we are on the subject kind of thing. -
Its a dumb Idea, Stitch told me not to stay at the Resort at the bottom, stay up top. So I planned my ride to end up at the top at dusk. Got a little side tracked and got to the top at the place that serves BBQ Can't remember the name. Guy was real nice, said room 6 is yours go on in and settle down. I was like WAIT, How much? Ridiculous Price, I was like Got a broom closet, it's just me? He's like no, and thats the price. Period, And they he ask. "Whatta ya going to do> Ride to the bottom?" I was like well, for that price yea. So off I went. I was the ONLY one on the road and it's Dark as all get out! I didnt see one single animal, I suppose they all heard me coming. In that darkness your headlamps are a lot of light so no problem seeing, there is a little trouble reading the banks of the turns and some switchbacks are a little testy that are fine in the daylight. It's kind of like a roller coaster, the lifts and dips and twists of the road a lot more exaggerated. All that goes through your mind is, even if I slightly crash, No one will find me soon and maybe never. Thats the Bad idea part. And no phone as you know. About 3/4 way down I caught someone else on a Harley. This was about 10 PM I let him lead the rest of the way and about 2 miles from the end a Crotch Rocket passed us both! Never found out why they were on it., No one came North. I tried to check into the place at the bottom, they had rooms but they quit at 7PM It was either early or late in the season. So I had to keep going down 129 alone. I tried to get into a Lodge or cabins and almost crashed on that road hit gravel at night, front tire slid half a foot, enough for me to put my foot down. It was closed. So I made it down to Robinsville, NC and the owner was sleeping in her chair just inside the entryway, (In her house, behind the bullet proof glass.) she woke up easy and checked me in! I don't think I was ever so glad to get off a Motorcycle to include travels on snow and Ice. Now maybe as a Group I would really say its cool, but alone ain't all that great. But If I go to one of these Meets and anyone wants to try it, I'm leading the way!

B nice wouldn't it. Period.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/darkside/ab829ceb.jpg Cheap Harbor Freight Woo Loo lasted 6 winters on this Roadstar in the snowbelt of Lake Effect snow Ohio. It's still going. And since I got the Venture, it will STILL be my Winter bike. Harley Shop has a Winter Warrior thing In January, We stopped by the STAR dealer, but it was a super bad snow with Ice under it and everything was closed that day. But the Harley Shop and Wal Mart, same parking lot. Still have the bike, but not the beautiful assistant.

I thought about the buletooth idea when I got my bike. BUT, it would be a rear PITA on trips with charging and battery life, so what we have makes much more sense. With my Edsets, I made that Mic RCA adapter so, I have the actual unit in my UTOPIA Backrest Pocket, ONE wire comes up and plugs into the Mic, And ONE wire comes up for the ear buds. I actually used the passenger headset outlet my whole last trip so that I would even avoid wires up front. OH, and when I wear My Shoei Full Face I can USe the EDSETS with the Ear Buds AND have my Bluetooth BLUEAUNT Interphone On, and listen to Music, CB Talk on the Phone, give commands to the GPS and Talk to my Passenger with the Blueaunt, A truck driver on the CB and another bike with the Blueaunt ALL at the same time. on just Two small wires! (The Blueaunt is wireless, 10 Hr Battery life but when used alone real use is about 6 HRS.) Thats some funny stuff, Should I add that I am dialing on the Radio, playing with my MP3, Punching up screens on the GPS, Comparing Google Maps on the Note 2 to the Garmin, Looking up deals on Hotels, AND switching out Cassettes!

I made an UltraStar out of a Roadstar, Some call it a RoadGlide, Put 65K miles on it in 5 years, Lots of great times but Gremlins always creep up when you MOD it that heavy and those kind of parts hard to find or duplicate on a road trip. So I ended up with a Venture and I am turning my Roadstar back to A Midnight Silverado with a Memphis Shades Batwing as opposed to a Reckless fairing with 6x9 and an HD Tour Pak. Winter project. So I would caution The V max project would end up the same. I think! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/MS1700/3ac90c8f.jpg 07 Midnight Silverado converted to a Ultrastar or Starglide, 5K in Modifications.

I'm thinking plastic is not so good, Search for Tandem tire equalizers, or Tire to tire emergency air lines. The Tandem equalizers are pretty much ideal as it goes Schrader to Schrader with a T with a Schrader and a air gauge. Seen on truck and RV wheels to keep the duals with same air pressure so they run the same Temp and do not blow out. Amongst a few other benefits. The RV size would seem to be Ideal. A rubber type hose. Like this , but got to be a smaller version. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JQaGUVOS9c]Crossfire Dual Tire Equalization System Installation - YouTube[/ame]

The Dragon is not that Bad, if you are going for four days, ride it on a week day. Mondays are great, after 10 AM the photographers will be there. (You know you can upload pics of you they take, Killboy, US129 Photos.com, and so on. So keep a count on what time you run it. Get a ride map at the Deals Gap resort. it's priceless. I would do Wahala Road for sure (129 South of dragon, where it T's off go left the road is on the right. Goes to Loafers Glory, NC. Then find , 28 N from there for sure. The Skyways and 129 S to the Highlands, being sure to stop at Bridal and dry Falls. I always like to take the foothills Parkway at the Top of the Dragon over to Gatlinburg, the River Road is best scenery around. You can do all that with a trailer, just stay close to the right line.

Keep at it, a talent I don't have time for, I'm watching. I have the Edsets and the sound with the ear bud option is incredible, works great on a shorty. SO keep ear buds in as an option. Doubles as an ear plug, reduces stress.

IronMike replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well thanks for the info post, Ill add it to the list of gremlins to look for while in there on maintenance. Things we should know about the 2nd Gen. Did you know you can Lock the trunk when open and close your keys in it? Yea. Ok my 2 cents. -
No pictures............didn't happen.

I just read the entire white sheet I posted. Can someone please go to my house and get that mobile one outta there for me quick! Even more convincing that its done by independent lab and Amsoil woukd be liable for any wrongful data. And remember. The last white sheet was posted for years and none of the big names contested it. But they tries to change their formula to beat amsoil. Lol. That's just wrong. Mobil 1 aint what it used to be. That may explain the temp difference we got when shooting it after a 300 mike ride. Amsoil being so much cooler. Ya all ought to really read that word for word. Explanations and all. Like I said before no one knows oil or tests oil as much as amsoil. Getting some on the way home. Yay!
-
You sound about like I did 7 years ago after my first trip there on a bike. Been going back 3 times a year ever since. Every year I find a new road and see all new things. So plan the next trip. Hit me up for some cool roads.

But its the new AMSOIL independent lap test white sheet, no they didn't come out on top of every category but enough so that it may convince you to use it over mobile one. I happen to be going right past some and going in to pick some up. If the link don't work just Google AMSOIL motorcycle white sheet and about the fifth one down is the newest one. Its a pft. It would be too long to explain it all on a thread. But as an AMSOIL dealer, reading all the things they have us read about oil there's no sense in putting anything but motorcycle oil in a motorcycle. If its car oil, its missing a lot of added benefits. Period. No wonder mobile one's viscosity is breaking down so fast. I think I might order a drum of AMSOIL for locals. The white sheet is the second edition and was done because some changed their formula. Also to be used with an AMSOIL filter or the like. I'm going to the k&p engineering permanent oil filter, far superior to any other for filtration and cooling. And, its green!

Crap! Had I known I would have suggested you dip a short spot over to (Google this). The Back of the Dragon! 32 miles of fantastic road starting in Tazwell Va. Better than the tail! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/20130830_134301_zpsfc31b48d.jpg Anyone else stop at Thompsons store to get patches t shirts and decals and Real Gas! trunk/luggage rack and others
IronMike replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did a how to on installing a trunk rack on a second gen recently. With lots of info and pics, I'm on my tablet or I'd link ya. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81193 The fine people here steered me to the Yamaha rack because it has chrome strips on the top side that add a considerable amount of support, when I checked into it I was convinced. I got the rack super cheap at local dealer. -
When it comes to oil there are many reasons you should stick with a motorcycle specific oil. If you were to contact shell oil they would advise against using their diesel oil in your bike for the zddp levels, (too low) and its not wet clutch friendly and the viscosity its sold at is no it real good for warmer climates. I used it I liked it but they said no in writing. I'm not looking it up write them yourself. I do use it as a winter storage oil because its so cheap. I can run it a bit with it in and put real motorcycle oil in come spring. But that was way back when I did not ride in winter. Anyhow Amsoil web site has a lot of information on motorcycle specific oil technology and no one can beat them at it IMHO. But even with their own independent lap test results mobile one synthetic most always comes in second. Search for the AMSOIL motorcycle white sheet . No one spends more money on oil research than AMSOIL, it was first in synthetics and they keep up on it. Check out their race day results too. In warmer climate I would use AMSOIL or mobile one 20 w 50 Other than that the 10 w 40. And as a side note a friend of mine and I did an impromptu test. Identical bikes ran same temp with same oil. But yet the one with AMSOIL ran 9 degrees cooler on same trip when shot with infrared thermometer in same spots on engine. Now he's a believer.

You are certainly a real rider in my book! In my 45 years of riding I never even heard of an HD guy doing that kind of mileage unless he was an Iron Butt type of guy. Oh! You are! I think you can stack the two and make it a mile eater award too, but ya have to read up on that, you'll one up me. I think you could have got more sleep, I would have slept in the TV room of a truck stop for that long, and got a shower there too. That's not much sleep. Congratulations that's a feat so close together and on a Harley! Had to get that josh in there. 6k in less than two months is fantastic.

I added a venture to my collection because its so streamlined and handles the wind well almost cutting through it compared to my Roadstar with a Reckless fairing and HD trunk. This is as good as it gets for fairing and trunk. Pass the trucks really fast like a slingshot, be easier on both of you. Never hang out by one, a tire can go at any second. Going dark side makes it hold the road better in those conditions though. And gravel and mud and soft ground and graded pavement, grooves, snow ice sleet and rain too. If you want traction, get some dark side action. Jus sayin"
-
Well Amsoil always does just a bit better than Mobile One. Either one is fine for me and I would run it 8K miles. But you can get lucky and run some real water and get away with it, its proven. I don't think much is worse than Yamalube in independent lab test results. So if it will run on that, it will run on anything.

Only thing I suggest is wearing Depends next test ride after you bleed it out again.
