  1. I'm doing an overhaul of my brakes. Cleaning and fitting new seals and pads etc. I split the two halves of the calipers to get into the cylinders and clean them out. So far so good...............then I dropped one of the square "O" rings that seal the fluid tranfer holes from one side to the other and now I can't find it. Yamaha don't even have a part number for these "O" rings and I can't get a replacement part from any auto brake parts supplier here in Australia either. I'd like to replace the lot as mine are probably originals and the bike is an '83 model and they have hardened and have lost their elasticity. Does anyone know where I can get 6 of these ? Thanks in anticipation Jim O'D...............................................
  2. Thanks Condor I haven't had time to do the oil change yet, but I reckon that'll solve the problem. I hope ! Jim O'D...
  3. Thanks for the replies everyone. I've been thinking about it and i realise it started to leak after I changed the oil. At the time I could only get 15W50 oil and I reckon that's the problem So Now I have 20W50 and I'll change the oil again and see if that fixes it. If not, I'll have to do the repair. Dano, I'd be interested in the mods you mentioned. Thanks again Jim O'D..
  4. I've been looking for an oil leak and on removing the rear wheel I see oil leaking out of the middle gear dust cover. I suspect the oil seal needs repacing. ( part No 18 on the middle gear parts catalogue). Anybody got any ideas on doing this ? Jim O'D Australia.
  5. I fitted a '86 1300 motor to my '83 1200. No problems. Just a straight change over. The 1300 had bigger carbs but I just put my 1200 carbs back in to save on cost and it made no difference to performance or fuel economy. The 1200 motor had overheated and cracked a cylinder so I replaced it with the 1300 to get around the 2nd gear problem before it happened. Merry Christmas ! Jim O'D Darwin, Australia.
  6. What can I say Earl ? You're a legend ! When you start a production run I want one. Jim O'D.....
  7. G'day Mate. I'm 68. My 2 Y/O Great Grandson loves to ride on the tank in front of me. I'm starting him off early as I'll pass it on to him when I get too old to ride. Probably when I'm about 90 ! I ride long distances to Ulysses Club AGM's annually. The next is at Albany in the South West of West Autralia and the round trip is around 5,000 miles from here in Darwin in the TOP End. Stay Upright ! Jim O'D.....
  8. Thanks a million. I went out and bought a female 8 pin plug and bridged pins 1 & 7 as advised and everything works fine. Jim O'D......... Australia....The Land of OZ........where "Down Under is On Top "! :Venture:
  9. I just love you blokes !! I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks Jim O'D Australia.
  10. My tape deck was faulty so I removed it. Now the radio won't work ! Do I have to have the tape deck installed for the radio to work ? Can I just bypass it if possible ? Jim O'D...........

  12. I'd like to fit an oil filter adaptor to my '87 1300 engine so I can use spin-on/spin-off filters. Makes life so easy. Does anyone have a used one at a reasonable price ? Jim O'D Darwin Australia
  13. I have an '83 VR. My manual says to check the final drive oil level you use the dip-stick. OK if you have a dip-stick. It also says there should be .3 litre in it. That's how I fill it. I pour .3 litre in. The '85 manual says fill to the lip of the filler hole or .2 litre. Well, that can't be right. It'd have to be well over .5 to fill to the lip. Anyhow, if someone has a dip-stick, could you give me the measurements so I can make one. eg, length and distance from the top to the two marks on the bottom. Thanks Jim O'D Australia.
  14. The reason I'm doing the engine change is that #1 cylinder has a cracked cylinder wall caused by a major overheat out in the boondocks. The head-gasket blew....I changed that and shaved the head to straighten that but didn't notice the cracked cylinder. It's since been diagnosed as the engine pressurises the cooling system and loses coolant and overheats. Anyhow, can I just re-sleeve that cylinder ? It'd be a good project to rebuild that engine, do the 2nd gear mod, and have good spare engine. Jim O'D......
  15. I've bought an '87 1300 engine to swap with my '83 1200. I was told it would be a simple swap with no problems. Has anyone done this swap before and can you tell me what surprises are in store ? Jim O'D Darwin, Australia.
  16. The brakes on my '83 VR aren't real flash. Has anyone done a mod to upgrade ? Jim O'D In the land of OZ.
  17. I've removed the instrument cluster and can't get the face off until I remove the Illumination control. Anyone know how to remove the control ? Does it just pull off or what ???? Jim O'D..
  18. Thanks Mate I disconnected the fuel line and blew air into the bowl and expelled fuel out the overflow pipe....twice. It still overflows when I start the engine. Either there's a lump of gunk stuck in the valve or the bowl is leaking and needs to be pulled out, dried, and painted with dope. Seems there's no easy way out. Jim O'D......
  19. Thanks Mate Sounds like a job for the local dealer. Jim...
  20. I've got a stuck float valve. How do you remove it to clean/replace it ? Jim O'D. Darwin, Australia.
  21. G'day everyone I've pulled the engine out of my '83 Venture Royale to replace a blown head gasket. While it's out of the bike I'd like to fit new rings. If I take the sump plate off, can I get at the big-end nuts and remove the pistons or do I have to split the case ? Any advise will help. Jim O'D.....
  22. My '83 VR overheated. Long story. Anyhow, the engine is now out of the bike and the heads removed. No 1 cylinder head cracked. I'll be looking for a replacement. Meanwhile I'd like to remove the pistons, hone the barrells and fit new rings. Can the pistons be removed without splitting the case ? Jimod Darwin Australia
