Rear Tire

Recommended Posts

after reading all there was to know about the E3's I stepped up and bought one. Man, can't tell you I hate this thing already. I used to run a 180 or 190 meltzer on the rear, But the E 3 came in a 170. The shop guy stated it had a stiffer sidewall on it. Yesterday, I laid the bike over into an intersection turn, and passed the chicken strip. the bike started slipping sideways. Not happy with this at all. I will be replacing it for a wider tire. this tire will be for sale very soon. ( about 400 miles on it ):mo money::mo money::bawling:

I like peg scraping at intersections

Man, I thought I pushed in the corners. I routinely dragged floorboards, even hitting crash bars too but never had problem with 150 E3. With the new links in rear and now higher, I seldom drag floorboards.

If I realy want to have that much fun I'll just jump on the ZRX1100.

I think someone sold you a line with the 170. I have only rode on the sidewall once and that was a ony because of the way the curve was slopped. I can't imagine what it would have done with a 170 on it.

I have about 600 miles on my New E3s and have been experiencing the same thing. I run 41 front and 40 back and 45 in the rear shock and 5 on the front shocks. I came from a VTX with metzlers that I would lean over pretty hard. I have had that sensation also that the back end was coming out from under me. I don't know if its because I came from springs to a air suspension or the bike is actually coming out from under me. I've talked with a few people and wondered if I'm trying to make a 800 lb + bike perform like a 600 lb bike.

I'm also interested in hearing others feedback on this. I'm using the recommended size for both front and back.

I'm running E3's on the front and rear of the '99. The only time I've experienced any side slip was riding down the Chief Joseph Highway into Red Lodge Montana and going over a gazilion hot tar snakes. The bike handled the non-snakepit curves like it was on rails. Running stock sizes and side wall pressures...

The new2me '07 has Metzlers, and they're being replaced with E3's as soon as the bank account recovers... The reason most of us went with the E3's is, although very popular, the Avon side wall cracking, and the Metzlers tossing chunks of rear tread. Personally I like the ride and performance of the E3's....

I recently replaced a set of E3s because of some slipping... At first I thought maybe I just hit some oil in an intersection or something but it happened a few times after that as well.

I had 21k on both front and read and there was some tread left [although it was at the wear bars].

Incidentally - Last spring I was riding with a fellow member here on a very warm day (~100) and we stopped at some point to chat about where to find food and we talked tires... we both felt slippage that day in a number of places. NOT comfortable, at all.

I was happy with the E3s but after several times of feeling the slippage, I just don't know anymore. I am on a set of D404 [emergency replacements] and already time to replace (worn out) so I don't know what to do... the last 3 sets of Avons cracked within weeks of being on... E3s are :confused24:... 404s, Love the tread pattern and wet handling but I cannot be replacing tires every 10-15k... Far too often for me...

Anyway -- I don't know what to tell you about the slipping on your E3 as the first time I noticed mine was after ~15k on the tires...

***EDIT***

I usually was happiest with my E3s F/R at 41/40 PSI but tried various other combinations...

Only time I notice slipping with the E3's is if I lock up the rear. Front feels like it is skittering in corners when pressure is below 36psi. Handle road snakes extremely well, great in heavy rain. Next tire change I can't see putting anything other than E3's back on.

I keep the front at 36-37psi, rear at 40psi. Rear shock 30psi (I'm 200lbs, Nancy about 120lbs), front at 3psi.

Replaced my E-3's with Michelein Commander II. Althought the front is just a tick narrower I haven noticed and decrease in handeling. Now I ain carving corners up neither but it feels fine. Is the grip loose on the front? or rear?

First - Floating

I have on occasion noticed a slight floating sensation with both the D404s and Exedras. The first time I noticed it I had the bike completely checked out. In case something was loose or out of place on the back end. Everything checked out fine. Now I just ignore the sensation and power on through. At this point I no longer feel it so I think it was just a floating feeling not a real sliding. Perhaps the suspension compressing or something.

Second - Tires

I know the name Bridgestone creates visions on cupping and noisy rides but. The new Bridgestone Exedra Max tires are worth looking at. It's the Max not the regular Exedra. They are far superior to the older tires, have multiple rubber compounds, deep treads and come in the right sizes. I put a set on mine at the last tire change and I have been very happy with them so far.

I have also had a 190 Metlzer on the rear. you'll have to call broward motorsports in davie florida and bombard them with questions on the tire sizes for a Venture. the last three tires I had on the bike were a 190 & 2-180's

I was on the Chief Joseph highway in June last year as well returning from the Black Hills. I 've never ridden a highway so bad with tar snakes. Even on the straights my bike was squirming so bad I thought i was going to down. I was pulling my one wheel trailer and initially thought it was that, but my B-I-L who was with me on his Concours 1400 said his bike felt just as bad.:shock3:

Well, We'll see how the New Goldwing Fairs. BYE BYE Venture:mo money::mo money::mo money::7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:

Congrats on the new bike. The new Goldwing will have Dunlops on it FWIW, but I believe they are radials. Given you have a new bike the following points are moot, particulalry that the Goldwing will out handle many bikes half its weight, and from a handling standpoint, the Venture doesn't come close, but keep them in mind if you think the Wing needs a wider rear tire.

If you like pegscraping through intersections (or any corner) keep in mind that sufficent peg scraping can unload the rear suspension (lean your bike over stationary with the sidestand down for an example) and any tire can and will slip in that condition.

Wider tires on a rim that is not of the correct width ( for the tire size) can result in less contact patch with the road, not more. The wider tire you are(were) using is also taller, so you are(were) probably getting more lean angle as result before scraping starts ,but not necessarily more traction or contact patch.

Unless you are (were) wearing the entire tire/utilizing the entire tread profile, bead to bead (out to the edge), in the stock 150 size, more tread width doesn't help. Even in the mountains with aggressive riding and pegscraping some corners, I still have about 1/8 to a 1/4 inch of the stock 150 tire not getting scuffed by the pavement.

with the wing, i'm finding that it wants to nose dive into turns, were the venture allowed me to lay the bike over ( which was more fun). I miss my venture a little, Like I'm still reaching for the choke to start the bike.

we'll see how it goes..............
