I use Shell Rotella T 15W40 and change every 5K using a Napa Gold 1358 filter.

Here is a link to filters

I'm with Monsta on this one........I don't think it matters which oil you use as long as you change it regurlarly. .........Yamaha manual says not to use "energy conserving" oils so that will eliminate 90% of the oil out there.

Shell Rotella® T Synthetic 5W- 40 oil (Look for the blue jug)

The oil is about $20 for a one gallon bottle at Walley-World. GREAT protection at a great price. It has and OUTSTANDING additive package for wet clutch applications like our bikes.

On a side note, I use a Purolater Pure One filter (part number PL14612) which I get at Advance Auto Parts where I get a 10% military discount.

This it probably the best filtering filter on the market. Another filter would be the proper sized EAO series filter from Amsoil, but the price including shipping is in my experience higher.

My :2cents::

Filter:

I use Mobil 1 filter (or Bosch). I had used Fram until I read a few write-ups and saw some cross-sections on them. Yikes.

Oil:

Most recent - Mobil 1 Fully synthetic (motorcycle specific). Before I found the motorcycle specific type, I had used the regular Mobil 1 fully synthetic line (non energy conserving) 15w-50

I would (and do) use Amsoil 10W40 Motorcycle Synthetic and their filter. My clutch basket whine/chirp got quieter with Amsoil. Also I have used it in bikes for years....with great success. Aircooled bikes usually have to have the idle speed adjusted down after Amsoil is first used, the reduced friction causes excessive idle speed......

I talked to a drag bike rider in Phoenix who related that he went from 7.6's to 7.4's by simply changing to Amsoil and no other changes.... at mid-7s, 0.2 is HUGE!

Everyone else would probably use something else and few will agree with each other.

Any good quality motorcycle-compatible oil and filter that are changed regularly will probably make the bike run longer than most people can stand to ride it.

Good luck!

I've been using Valvoline 10W40 Moto Oil and Fram Moto Oil Filter ever since. I still have have 4 quarts of the Valvoline Moto Oil and Fram Filter on stand by in the garage for my next oil change. After that, I am going to try out Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 and Purolator Oil Filter as has been used by some forum members. There is just one condition to this...I should verify with my own eyes that the Rotella Oil does have some wet clutch application written on the jug. :mustache:

  • 4 months later...

Just did a change oil 2 days ago on my Venture after 3K miles of travel. Instead of using Valvoline 10W40 moto, I switched to 15W40 Rotella for $10.50 a gallon. Rode in this morning to work and the bike seems to run normally with no noticeable clutch slippage. I am starting to like this oil. Ride Safe.

I've used nothing but this oil in both my bikes for about 7 years. Nary a problem. Last oil change I used the Wally World brand SuperTech ST7317 (the longer one - under $3) after reading about many here researching it (i.e. cutting it open) and having good results with it. So that's a complete oil and filter change for $14. Like many have already stated, the most important thing about changing the oil is... changing it regularly. Any acceptable oil (non energy conserving) will do. So why not do it cheaply and often?

I'm an old fashioned believer of going with the OEM recommendation of Yamalube semi-synth 20W50 and their stock filter. My '99 RSV has never had anything else, and I change it out every 5K and it usually comes out with a golden hue to it. Never black or sludgy.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :sun:

Never really tried Wally World Brand, but I think I am much satisfied with the Rotella. For a $16 oil change, that is a good price. I am telling myself, why didn't I find out about Rotella soon enough.
