  1. While I'm waiting for my new clutch upgrade to arrive, the OEM clutch is slipping a lot now.. I'm wondering if something is out of adjustment.. I don't fully understand how these clutches work or if they can be adjusted but here goes. While traveling 70 mph in either 4th or 5th, if I come onto the throttle, the clutch slips badly.. Today for the fun of it, I just touched the clutch inwards a bit and the revs came up fast.. wow, not too much pressure.. but only when at 70 mph in 5th.. city street speeds and gears doesn't really have that effect.. Would I be lucky enough that there is a quick adjustment that can be made to make the clutch better? The bike is still ride-able, just can't drop the hammer on it.. sigh
  2. Hmm twice now, 1st time it happened almost cost me an accident involvement and tonight it happened again but just a puzzlement. The first time I wasn't sure what had happened but twice? Hmm here's what is happening, hopefully someone could lead me in the right direction for help.. 1st time it happened, I was cruising along at 60 to 70 mph in 5th, and went to pass a car (2 lanes same direction) but out in behind of me a sports car traveling super fast came up on me very fast.. wow, caught ME by surprise! So I dropped the hammer in 5th gear and there was a very noticeable lack of acceleration and a higher rev of the engine and eventually, things started to speed up.. This wasn't the typical too high a gear for the need, it was different. 2nd time this happened, I was cruising along at 55-65 mph in 5th.. just needed to scoot around a slow moving vehicle so I dropped it in 4th and dropped the hammer... and the same thing happened.. wow.. I've never felt this with any of the bikes I've owned and I'm thinking that perhaps my clutch is dying (why not, everything else on this bike has eventually died and been replaced lol).. I climbed Mount Washington no probs, and the bike slows down properly with engine de-acceleration.. I cannot duplicate this symptom in low gear.. like dropping the hammer in first gear doesn't give me the same symptoms but it's not as spirited as when I discovered my rev limiter a while back.. So, what do you think is wrong here, and what are my options to get this working properly again? No warranty on the bike here in Canada but there is when I visit the USA. Thanks in advance!
  3. Awww man.. I got my carbs all synched up nicely.. took special care to do them up right and all.. I was heading out of town to get new E3s installed.. go figure.. a nice shop 2.5 hours away charges less for tires and installation that it's worth the while to go out there and have it done.. however, with our expensive gas, it comes out even after the gas price factor.. However.. Running the bike up to 75 mph in 4th gear everything is SO nice.. smooth, mirrors steady, no buzz, lots of guts.. but when I shift into 5th (OD), it feels all wrong.. I would best describe it as harsh helmet buffeting while driving over a rumble strip.. does that make sense? A heavy thumping sensation that goes away when I shift back into 4th and / or go 85 mph in 5th, though I can feel part of it.. I tested it out by synching the carbs again, shutting it off, starting it up again, blipping the throttle a little and even switching the lines so that the carbs would pump against a different pair of rods (in case one or two were sticking) but all certainly does appear rock solid.. But I can't figure out what's causing that weird feeling in 5th.. it's not lugging, not at those speeds... I started feeling it happening even before I synched up my cards.. but this time I was on a long road trip so I could really feel it.. Rode back mostly in 4th at 75-80 mph which didn't seem to hurt fuel economy too much considering the winds.. but very responsive =) Any thoughs or ideas? BTW, them E3's are sweeeeet!!
  4. Hello all, I just got a 88 1300 Venture Royale and well.. all the gears work fine.. but when I put it into 5th gear it makes noise like something is loose and bouncing around in the gearcase. Is there something common I should know about? or am I going to have to pull the engine apart and rebuild my transmission? I hope not. I just traded two good working hondas for this yamaha. I do have to admit .. this is one nice riding and handling bike.. I also couldnt get the cruise control to work either.. Shawn
  5. what does it take to install a vmax drive to an 07 venture....can i just buy a complete assembly...or just a couple of gears......and how much is the cost for parts would the final 5th gear ratio with a vmax rear be higher or lower than the 4th gear ratio on a stock second gen i discovered on my recent trip that running my stock venture in 4th gear , even at 65-70 indicated ( uncorrected) , that my gas mileage varied only 1-2 mpg......and whenever i encountered an incline , the bike just pulled better, felt smoother, in 5th gear it always appears to be lugging...even though i know it isn't....which brings up my next question what is the engine rpm at 70 mph indicated (uncorrected) in 5th gear and 4th gear...stock 2nd gen..
  6. Out for a ride today. On the way home started up a small hill in 5th and cruz on. shut off cruz grab a little thottle and jumped out for gear. Down shifted ok to 4th. Went back to 5th and it was like I was in neutraul. Got home in 4th ok about 30 miles. Is under warranty. just like to know if anybody else had this happen to them and what it was. Have a ride in 2 weeks. Dont know if dealer can fix in time. If they cant I will do it myself. Hate to have someone else work on my stuff.
  7. Ok guys, have a question about transporting a VR behind a 5th wheel RV. Does anyone make one of the bike lifts that mounts on the back of a motor coach for a 5th wheel RV?? When retirement gets here, want to become full time 5th wheeler and need something to haul the bike on. Trailer behind RV will put me overlength in a lot of states. Any ideas?? Don H.
  8. Hey there another newby here, Lets start of buy saying I'm not the most mechanically inclined person there is wright from the start. Now for my problem. After about an hour or so of ridding my 91 VR the battery gets week and inevetably I start to get the slow starts. The bike is also surging (for lack of a better way of explaining it) when i excellerate and also when I level of. It runs ok in 5th gear at 50 mph but if you drop it to 45 in 5th it has that whole surge thing going on. I've already tried multiple applications of sea foam and also checked the battery. The battery was low on fluid and power( about 4-6)volts so I charged it overnight after topping of the fluids and it had only dropped slightly over night. All this is voltage readings are coming from the gauge on the bike as I have no acess ( speeling?) to a meter. Since I dont have a meter I was wondering could I do the trick of removing the positive cable from the bike while it is running or does that not workwith a stator. I now it works with ans alternator but that is a different animal all together. Any ideas woulsd be greatly appreciated as I have only had this bike for a few months and am looking forward to many more years to come with it. This problem has also gotten worse since I added a pair of running lights ( the 55 watt lights from walmart). Cant say enough about this site as I have enjoyed the time I've spent hear greatly. Again any ideas that a mechanics dream like me could do in the drive with limited tools would be greatly appreciated. David
  9. Hello I read a post from someone just as I was leaving with my wife to go up north before the weekend, but I can't find it now. There was a person from the Guelph area talking about riding into Toronto to see the Fireworks display at Ontario Place on Sat. July 5th, and asking if anyone wanted to join he and his wife. If you are out there, we may be able to meet up with you.
  10. Started to get a vibration today at 60mph. Bike accelerates great and pretty smooth. But got on the throttle heavy at 60 mph in 5th gear and it felt like an off-balance tire or an engine vibration. I have been thinking that I need to get the carbs synced, so I immediately thought that maybe one cylinder was getting fuel starved at high demand, but it did not do this high rpm in lower gears. Carbs out of sync? Just need a good cleaning? I was at WallyWorld so got a can of SeaFoam and put half of it in with full tank. I'll give that a try first. I also checked to make sure all plug wires were on. My other thought is, as I have read here before, that getting on the throttle hard in 5th gear at 60mph is just not gonna get it done. No torque. Am I on track or missing something? Bike is 2007 RSV, 12,000 miles, fresh oil change with Mobil 1 MC 10W40, rear end fluid changed at 10,000 miles.
  11. I feel as I should Apologize to everyone for not checking in once in a while. You know how it is you get tided up into the daily living and forget about the help and friends that are right in front of you.. Until life reaches out and grabs you by the ...... Well in any case here is my problem... was out riding the other night with my 04 trike and as I went through the gears I though I felt the clutch slip. But when I tried to make it slip latter by accelerating in 5th gear going up a hill it felt fine. But latter I thought I felt it again.. Now my question is....am I losing my mind or is this what happens when the clutch starts to go out ? Any help is welcome Thanks Mike

  13. Venture Riders, I just lost 5th gear on my 2003 Venture. Has anyone ever had any trouble with the transmission? Bakers517
  14. I'm getting different answers. I know my OD light comes on when I switch into 5th. Do the '07s do it in 4th?
  15. Has anyone with a 2nd gen or RS hit the rev limiter in 4th or 5th gear? Just wondering. Rod
