Hi guys! Well the cold weather hit and I went a few too many days without starting my firstgen VR and bought a Black & Decker trickle charger at a local store. Its a sweet little unit that comes with three interchangeable connectors, 1 that you can bolt onto the terminals and leave it on there for quick plugin, a 2nd with alligator clips and a 3rd thats a cigarette lighter plug. I was preparing to pull the false tank cover and bolt on the first when I remembered...Hey, my venture has a cigarette lighter, so I took the easy way and plugged the trickle charger in that way. An hour later and Vroom! Vroom! it started right up. Great news right? Well, yes except for one little thing. I noticed my headlight and the lights on my instrument cluster gauges were not on. Im pretty sure I popped a fuse but before I tear in there I was hoping to find a diagram for the fusebox on the first gens. I would like to know if I can safely replace the blown fuses with fuses that are a little larger...and I mean a LITTLE larger. Im not going to throw 20 amp fuses in there and defeat the whole purpose of having fuses in the first place. Im also not in a huge hurry because having the headlight NOT light up saves a ton of battery and makes these cold winter starts...but I will need to fix it before I take the bike back out in the spring. Another crazy idea I had that Im inviting comments on.... I know you legally MUST have a working headlight on a motorcycle, but has anyone considered putting a switch in...maybe out of the way...opposite the hazards switch, expressly for cold starts? I just keep thinking what an advantage it would be to have one when your bike battery is giving its all and its not quite enough....wouldnt it be great to shut off the headlight and have that extra power for starting? Feedback is welcome!

The old fuse block ain't doin' it anymore. Aside from the corrosion that keeps coming back time after time, yesterday one of the fuse holders broke off, so the fuse won't be held now. Luckily, it was the ACC fuse!! Who's got a good setup on their ride?? I'd like to move over to the newer auto fuses. I've tried a few different fuse blocks, but can't find one that is small enough to fit under the faux cover. Any ideas, manufacturers, parts stores???

I blew a couple of fuses which go to the radiator fan over the course of three weeks or so. I came up with some time to investigate the reason for blowing these fuses, and I also had a new package of assorted fuses. A fuse is a fuse right? I found them while visiting one of those cheap Chinese tool establishments. A whole package of 20 fuses for just a couple of bucks! Anyway, I plugged a fresh new 10 amp in, turned on the key and proceeded into my shop to retrieve my meter to do a little resistance checking. As I turned and walked toward my sweet '86 now parked in the driveway, I saw a mushroom shaped plume of smoke rising from my bike. I screamed to my bike, turned off the ignition and looked to see if I needed to grab a water hose. The smoke cleared and it was evident whatever was burning had stopped. First thing I checked was the fresh new fuse I had just installed. The freakin' plastic surrounding the element was melted away but the metal element was as good as new. Heck, I could've looped a piece of clothes hanger and got that result! Anyway, after tearing apart the wiring harness, replacing all the fried wiring which was now just strands of charred copper and melted insulation, I went to NAPA and bought good fuses. It's been three weeks with no new burned fuses and the fan works great. Lesson learned. Maybe this post will save you from the same experience.

Well while in El Paso I bypassed the ignition as shown by the excellent photo and verbal instructions from flb78! Thanks again. Have now had time to take a look and hook it all back up (after also replacing battery) and found out the ignition still is a NO GO with new battery in and wires replaced to the ignition. So leads me to believe the ignition is still out. I can live with it for a while. Going to get with dealer tomorrow and see if warrenty is still in effect! It is an '03 and I was told by previous owner June is the end of the warrenty! QUESTION...when the ignition went south on you did you also lose the sound system? I have no sounds anymore. Haven't checked the fuses on that end again. Just assumed it was connected to the ignition. Thanks again. And I am on the assistance list so if any of you are over this way and need help let me know. flb we may have to have a maintence day some where between here and there sometime. SS

Ok, this wasn't supposed to happen, yet! Radio has been on the blink for a week or so, working occasionally, not at all others, for minutes at a time.... Took off seat last night to inspect cables under the backrest, all seemed fine there. Rode in to work today, ran like a champ, radio still on the fritz. Riding home tonight, have gone maybe a mile and boom, it dies while in motion. No warning, just conks out. Thought it might be fuel, though I filled recently, switch to reserve, nada. In fact, no lights, NOTHING! Oh except of course, the radio control has power! What the hell? The only thing with any lights/power at all is the radio control on the handlebar. Otherwise, it's dead. Looked at fuses under seat, all are fine, none blown. Didn't get a chance to look at other fuses. Had it towed to local dealership. Just when the weather had warmed up too. Ideas anyone?

This is about the worst electrics problem I've ever seen. No lights, signals, gas guage, speedo..........NOTHING on my 2003 Midnight Venture. Any ideas where to start looking? The manual (the cheapy little user one, not the shop jobby) refers to three fuse boxes: the "main" one, number 1.....and number 2. Are there really 3? Should I be checking fuses......or go straight to looking for burned/disconnected wires? The previous owners DID do a fair bit of fooling around: passing lights...LED's...alarm.....etc. Any thoughts GREATLY appreciated! Mike

On my 1990 1st Gen I am unable to determine what these fuses are anybody know? Thanks Jim.

Stupid question...but where can a guy find fuses for a 1st Gen VR? My headlight fuse 15A 1" fuse blew...I went to the local Yamaha dealer, Napa, & Checker and while the auto parts places had plenty of fuses, they were either too long or too short...nobody had the 1" fuses. Didn't think buying a fuse would be that big of a deal!?

Been working on this 2001 RSV. The bike was dumped and had damage to the lower cowling that holds the fuses. The Main Control Unit was also damaged. The Audio doesn't work. I replaced the MCU (used, they said it worked), put dielectric on all connections. Did a DC volt test and I am getting power up to the audio fuse in the lower cowling. There is no power in the 18 pin connector that attaches to the radio. Are there any other fuses I should be looking for? Any suggestions?
