1. Do these bikes have the same linked brakes as the Ventures? They must but mine doesn't seem so. I get a lot more rear wheel lock ups than I expected.
2. You need the cable adapter. The one I bought had the old style standard USB receptacle (not a mini or micro) but those are common enough. I had to update the software to a new version for my 89 VR. But that was a couple of years ago. I sold the bike before installing it so I can't report on that. I sold the module to someone on this site. I still have the software in an archive somewhere if needed.
3. One of my favorites I wish I still had.... 1983 Midnight Maxim XJ750k Touring with Yamaha fairing and bags.
4. I put 5 in the fronts and 40 in the back (they were 0 and 20). Seems to ride better but I'm no expert. That pump I bought worked great.
5. This sort of reminds me of the log house that was advertised in the back of comic books when I was a kid. There was a thread on this site about that. There was that Daniel Boone image that was appealing; turned out that the reality fell short. Just a plastic sheet. So be careful; sounds like you are. Can't really get a log house for a dime, then or now.
6. Starting this thread up again. Any new advice / recommendations for a shock pump? Any luck with this one? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006ID37ZS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AT7B7UCUVYVLX&psc=1
7. These Venture Riders are a pretty cool bunch! Nice cars! We had a series of these 53 Plymouths so I've always wanted one. Nothing special about them just nostalgia.
8. Great bikes. I tried to find one a few years ago. Keep us posted.

Marijuana

Not an answer about use but more about legalization here in Oregon...... Employers were worried whether they could still legally do drug testing with consequences - the answer here is yes. Lots and lots of mom and pop retail places have opened. There is a glut and I expect there will be a shakeout and lots of people will lose their money. I expect that will accelerate once the feds make money and banking safely legal. Then the big boys will crush everyone else. There is already way more weed being produced than legally sold. Retail prices are dropping which makes it hard to make a living. The feds are going to squeeze the producers for sales on the black market. There will be raids and proscecutions soon. Industrial tenants are complaining of rents going way up as more and more growers set up shop. There have been stories about growers using so much electricity that it is a problem in some locations. Security services have become a growth industry associated with grow sites and retail locations. It looks like edibles and concentrates are where the real action will be. Smoking a bowl not so much. There are regular stories in the paper of home hash oil refineries blowing up though that seems to be in decline as more professional industrial operations get set up. Apparently, they use volitile chemicals (ether etc) and heat to extract the oil, and the usual pothead stereotype finds himself on fire sometimes. The medical marijuana folks are complaining that they can't compete against full-on retail operations so they mostly switch over. Medical MJ has had a niche legality but I expect it will just get absorbed. Oregon has been ramping up testing for pesticides and other contaminants as well as potency but couldn't certify labs fast enough to meet demand. That's been a real bottleneck problem. Outside growers worry about cross-fertilization with hemp. Neighbors complain about the smell and attracting trouble. The state has been surprised at how much MONEY is coming in on the tax. The neighboring state worries that their tax rates are too high and it makes them lose out. The sheriffs in neighboring states are busy busting the product leaving the state illegally. The state is starting to wonder whether it should limit the number of businesses, or let the free market reign. Two years ago I went to the state fair and there was an exhibit of growing marijuana. After sneaking around in the 70s for seeds and stems and ditch-weed, I concluded that the world was changing faster than me.
11. Grandkids are a great reason to make changes. Congrats. I remember the news of your accident, too. And, what an excellent run of bikes you have had!
12. 3d printing might be a way to make a case for my digitalcarbsync.com device. If you have access to a scanner and some design skills let me know. PM me if you wish. Thanks
13. I agree - that's my used vehicle philosophy, too. Mine had 12k on it and was flawless, so I happily paid 53.
14. They're out there. Here's a couple near me. Long ride home for you. https://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/d/2007-yamaha-royal-star-tour/6625368627.html https://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/mcy/d/2008-yamah-royal-star-tour/6618368814.html I think the RSTD is really great value bike especially if you have been riding any Venture and you love that water cooled V4. I searched for a while, nationwide, until mine popped up at a dealer across the river in Washington state. I went for a look, started it from cold, made sure all 4 fired, and bought it. I didn't even have to pay sales tax because Oregon doesn't have it and the dealer can waive it.
15. Really, if you haven't got a mercury manometer, go digital. There are a few choices including my kit. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?90191-New-digital-carb-sync-board&p=1040996#post1040996
16. I love mine. It is a great cruiser. The red looks better in person and it looks great in the photo. Mine doesn't whine often. I've read they did something about that by the 09s. It rides great although the stock seat is not for long journeys. First gens are faster and more nimble. These are better looking. Once I got used to the difference when leaning it over I'm having fun in the twisties. Cruise works well. The rear brake is different - locks before I think it should. I usually get 40 mpg. I hated not having a center stand at first but I got used to it. It gets lots of attention wherever I stop. Here's mine
17. What made that frame design unstable? The article doesn't really go into that. Any ideas?
18. Thanks. I'm glad your trip went well.
19. Oh, gotcha. I'll give the long answer. The sensor reads vacuum from 0 to -115 kPa and returns a voltage of 0 to 5 volts (actually 5 to 0 volts). The board reads the voltage and converts that to an integer value of 0 to 1023. I keep an array of readings and extract the peak value. I display integer values to save display space, and because using something past the decimal point would suggest a false level of accuracy. I use a little math to change that range into something useful. By default, I use each point equals 1/10th-inch mercury. You can go into the software and change it to a different range. There are a few. One of my European customers asked for millibars for example. So - to answer your question - it is not rounded in the usual sense. It is smoothed by keeping an array of integers and extracting the peak. Hope that makes sense!
20. Not entirely sure what you mean. Some other products try to tell you what to do. I figured that for guys syncing their own carbs they would just want the data reading - not a nanny. If it was just being used on a Venture I could maybe get to a close approximation of the required adjustment. But this thing can be used on a lot of different engines including those old six carb Valkeyies. I wouldn't want to try to figure that out!
21. Good suggestion. I'm building a strong relationship with our local community college because of my day job. I'll explore that idea.
