This a good quality fuse box?
saddlebum replied to Chaharly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
wait till you ride in parts of Missouri during flood season ---you'll wish you had one for the saddlebags . -
years ago back in the late eighties, I was fleet maint manager for a fleet of trucks. A rep from Quaker state came to see me about supplying me with bulk oil. When I commented that I was not interested because of the high varnish and paraffin content in the oil. His comment was simply that yes their content was a bit higher than most oils but that he could give me a better price point then who I was using at the time. Naturally I still declined.

Gee Tom this wouldn't be the time when you felt the need to wear a life jacket in waist deep water so you would feel safe was it?
-
I have been a Mechanic for over 40 years working on most anything that moves and the only engines I ever saw full of sludge ran Quaker State. Guess there is a reason why engines run quieter on Quaker state I assume it has to be the high varnish content.

actually during the leadfoot years of the 60's and 70's young male drivers were worse due to the hot rods and muscle cars but a study came out a few years ago indicating that it has reversed and its now the young female population specially in the 25 to 30 range that have become the more dangerous drivers but for some reason the insurance still rapes young male drivers.

I could always mediate since I I have both Dutch and Viking blood lines in my pedigree. I may require a little incentive though

Gee Abdule ( chabicheka ) I did not realize those pics were upside down, I just thought you were playing Batman hanging from a tree attempting to get some aerial shots. As usual great pics and thanks for posting.
-
Sorry you had rain Abdule but glad you made it home safe. I took the time to stop for breakfast and had a dry drive all the way home to Burlington. Of course I was in my Tundra so it would not have nade a difference either way for me. I also had a great time, though I did miss being on my bike. However the turnout was good and the gathering was great. Always enjoy it when we get together. Next Stop WNY rally. Last but not least a big thanks to Marca, Carl and Don for all their hard work in organizing this event. I would also like to give thanks to Mike and Tammie for their contributions which included a great impromptu Picnic, which I am sure everyone really enjoyed.

Passing of a friend brings question about accident investigations
saddlebum replied to baylensman's topic in Watering Hole
It happened to me in the accident I had in 2007. I was cut of by a car who suddenly changed his mind about turning left and swept across the dividing 6 ft wide median into my lane cutting me off which caused me to wipe out. Initially it was deemed that the driver of the car was 100% at fault. While I was in Germany the final police report came in and based on it's findings, the insurance Co. decided to hold each of us 50% responsible. the other guy claimed he was in my lane all along and that I came up behind him and lost control. Despite the fact that this guy had no license (it was suspended) and drove an uninsured Car borrowed from a friend, the officer gave his version more credibility then mine. She did not even show a left hand turn lane in her report nor included the skid and scrape marks on the pavement which clearly backed up my version of what happened. I did up my own version of what happened included a google aerial pic of the intersection indicating vehicle positions and movement prior to during and after the accident. I also indicated were the the skid and scrape marks on the pavement were and pointed out that I had shown these marks to the first officer on the scene and then Later tried to show them to the second officer who refused to go look at it and was the one who wrote up the report, and failed to include any of this in her report. I then sent this in to the police complaint dept. The head officer of the complaint board promptly investigated into it and was able to verify my version of the events and verify that there were collaborating marks . Apparently the officer who took over the investigation was new and this was her first solo report and she had left this fact out of her report. As a result the police dept promptly corrected this error and kindly contacted my insurance co. who has now agreed that the other person is once again 100% at fault. They offered me a $6,600.00 settlement minus $250.00 should I decide to keep my bike. Needless to say I kept my bike and spent the summer of 2008 restoring the bike. -
Well sort off.. Howlong after Stents can you start doing stunts .
-
Well Jack I wish the best for you with fast recovery. So far I seem to be doing well, so much so that I keep forgetting I'm supposed to take it easy for a bit and find myself doing more than I should. Looking forward to riding again when I'm allowed. PMS is worst part. (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome)

As I mentioned in post http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?137380-Went-for-Angiogram-and-left-with-a-Stent I had a stent inserted. I would like to know from those who have had stents how long before you went back to riding as my doctor recomends that I should wait at least a month and better yet not ride at all this season. To me it sounds a bit overkill so I would really like to hear from those that have been through it.

Unfortunately here in Canada we have this ridicules legal thing that basically disallows you to protect yourself. If you subdue someone entering or attacking you by killing or maiming him even though your life is threatened your charged with excessive force. If you simply subdue or secure the attacker in any way simply to hold him for the law you are charged with unlawful confinement. A buddy of mine was once attacked in his own home by three guys who brought with them a baseball bat for the sole purpose of laying a beating on him. He managed to get hold of the bat and put the run to them. Next thing he knew the police were on the door and he was charged with assault which stayed on his record for seven years, go figure. Now don't get me wrong, I am not a violent person and I certainly for the most do not condone violence except when it comes to defending ones home, family and freedoms against aggressors. So on that note I do agree some laws need to exist to prevent small aggression's from snowballing into larger uncontrollable issues, but who decides where the line of common sense lies?

On another note when it comes to carry I hear a lot about open and concealed and wonder what factors determine why one state vs another state choose to go with one or the other. On one hand I can see where open carry makes it quicker to pull a weapon for self defense but can also make it quicker to pull a weapon unnecessarily in the heat of an argument. It also seems to me that when a state allows concealed carry only, the criminal has no way of knowing who is carrying and who isn't causing him to be less bold where in an open carry state a criminal can simply pick and choose his victim increasing his odds of success. So what is the reasoning behind the different forms of carry?
-
Hey Puc I fully understand the part about the the right to bear arms. My curiosity revolves around an individual who has a permit to carry and is forced into a situation were he was forced to to use it in a lethal manner to protect himself and/or loved ones and where he would stand in a court of law? Is he charged on the spot? Is it self defense unless proven otherwise? or is it manslaughter until self defense is proven? This is the part that confuses me.

I do believe you when you say you need all the help you can get but not sure if I am qualified.... Shoot I don't even own a white coat or padded room. Now Sarcasm that there is something I may have some qualifications in and would be more than willing to lend a hand. Also hard manual work heck I can be helpful there too. I love hard work, I can stand there and watch you work all day and if you do need some assistance to get things done I believe I still have a lunging whip in my tack box from my horse training days.

This was the same scenario that occurred with my youngest brother who was the 1st to go in instantly for a quadruple bypass and the one that caused the other 3 of us to get checked out and none of us even had really high cholesterol, slightly elevated yes but not high enough for the doctors to show concern.
-
Being Canadian and only allowed for the most part to own hunting or sporting rifles, or hand guns for target shooting, which require special permits to transport from one spot to another and not familiar with gun carrying laws such as you have south of the border. I am curious. So now an individual who has a permit to carry is forced into a situation were he was forced to to use it in a lethal manner to protect himself and/or loved ones. Were does he stand in a court of law? Is he charged on the spot? Is it self defense unless proven otherwise? or is it manslaughter until self defense is proven? Not judging just as I admit to having mixed feelings on the subject both for and against, and not because of the firearm itself but rather the complexity and unpredictable nature of human beings in general, but just curious as I stated. PS also not trying to start a debate here, so @Freebird feel free to delete post if it looks like it could.

There was once a rider who prided himself in riding every state in the USA. As it happens were ever he went, when ever someone needed assistance, He was more than willing to stop and lend a hand if he was able. One Day he had a close call and while recovering in the hospital, he was visited by the almighty Lord. The Lord commented on his more than helpful nature and offered to do something special for him. At this the rider commented that he had rode to every state except Hawaii. and asked if the lord could create a bridge from the main land to Hawaii. The Lord said that was a very difficult undertaking and could he request something different. So the rider asked for a means that would make it easier to understand his wife. The Lord responded by asking. "Now just exactly how long would that bridge need to be?"

Oddly enough, I did not feel bad to start with other than feeling like my normal high level of stamina was not what it was, leaving me to think I was just getting out of shape due to the fact that for the past 5 years I was doing more supervisory work versus full time physical work. I went for a checkup primarily because my two younger brothers had quadruple bypasses and both their surgeons stated that because none of us ever smoked, we ate healthy the majority of the time and where physically active, that it was likely hereditary and that myself and another brother should get checked out just in case. Well during the stress test they spotted a slight glitch in the ECG when I reached the target point. They then sent me for a nuclear stress test which indicated a small blockage. My cardiologist said that I would not need surgery that it could be treated with medication. He also went on to say that he did not feel I would need an Angiogram, but I could get one done if I wanted to get a more precise dignostic, since the Angiogram is the golden test. After talking to my brothers they insisted I should play it safe and get it done, so I did. So here I am laying there on the table feeling the instrument going up my arm and around the inside of my shoulder, then I feel a slight burning sensation which only lasted for a second as they injected the dye. Next the radiology scanner is moving back and forth over my chest like some sort of alien machine out of star wars trying to determine if I am Allie or foe. During all this time I am listening to the surgeons talking away when all of a sudden the word STENT, enters the conversation. Next part of the conversation turns into something you might hear between a navigator and a pilot as the negotiate a difficult maneuver through a tricky shipping lane, as I feel things moving in and out, and back and forth in my arm and shoulder. They whole procedure took about an hour. Once back in recovery they informed me that the artery was actually 90% blocked instead of 70% and that it was a good thing that I decided to go in for the Angiogram. So having said all this and trying not to be too boring about it, I think if any one reading this is in a similar situation and are offered the option to get an angiogram or not I would suggest you do it. The angiogram itself in most cases is not a big deal and the answers are more precise. Obviously there is risk involved but as with any intrusive surgery, But not knowing can be risky as well.

Mmmmm:think: learn something new everyday. Until now I was totally oblivious of the fact that splinters were part of the STD group .
-
Sorry to hear about your dilemma Jack. I hope and pray that with time and proper care things get a lot better. Both my brothers felt like you described and ended up with bypass surgery, that was less than a year ago and today they are feeling like their old selves. So keep your chin up and think positive.

Delinked Rear Brakes are weak
saddlebum replied to rrod1393's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am sure every one has their personal reasons as to delink or not to delink. All the bikes I have ever ridden had independent front and rear brakes so I learned the scary way that my 89 had linked brakes and could not understand why someone would do that. In my case it had to do a lot with how I discovered linked brakes. I once topped a hill only to to be faced with a stop sign. Now usually there is a warning sign indicating stop sign ahead and whether it was there in this case I can't really say, Bottom line was I was now on a paved road coated with loose gravel and sand so naturally I only applied rear brake (or so I thought since at this time I was not aware that the brakes on the venture were linked) next thing I know front wheel locks up and slides out I quickly release the brakes and thinking I must have touched the front brake without thinking I reapply the rear brake. Now this time I am fully aware that I am not touching the front brake yet again the front wheel locks up and slides out. I quickly release the brake and now with no chance of stopping I quickly look both ways, roll on the throttle and scoot through the intersection, something I never want to willingly repeat. I get home and check the bike over to see why this is happening and discovered my brakes were linked so my first thought right then and there was to do something about delinking the brakes. While working out the details as to how I was going to go about this I happend to have a conversation with another member on the sight and discovered I was not the only one who was not comfortable with linked brakes and found out eventually that they too delinked brakes which eventually led me to skydoc and his kits. Personally I am happy and feel safer for doing it, but like I said to each his own.
