  1. You guys are great! I think the consensus of replies has explained this very well and it's actually a normal part of the RSV. It could be described as a clunk or a click but since I haven't come across any other RSVs around here yet I just wanted to make sure it was ok the way it is. Last time I had a motorcycle was over 20 years ago and I finally got a Suzuki Burgman 650 scooter a couple years ago. It's a pretty cool machine (it will do 105mph!) and I still ride it occassionally, but the RSV is my baby now. On another related note....I had that darn chirp from the very beginning on this 2009 RSV and had the "I" basket installed about two weeks ago. The chirp is mostly gone now, so that's a good thing. At 4,000 miles I also switched to Rotella T synthetic. I love this bike! Thanks again, David
  2. I've had my 09 RSV for about six months now and love it, but I'm not sure if I'm just not good at shifting or if there's some other problem. It seems like if I really rev up the engine right before shifting, and then quickly pull the clutch and twist down the throttle, it shifts pretty smoothly without any clanking noise. Putting it into 1st gear always clanks and even 2nd gear clanks a bit if I pull in the clutch and slowly shift into gear. 3rd also clanks a little if I pull the clutch and slowly shift into gear. It's like I need to rev the engine a split-second before shifting, not to get a clank. How much, if any "clank" or noise should I hear when shifting? I know some of you don't even use the clutch, but I'd rather use it. Can someone give me some pointers? Sorry to be such a newb. David
  3. It's definitely on the left side.....I've also replaced the original coax lead with a new 18" factory one straight to the radio, and a new FireStick FireFly antenna. Receives great, transmit signal is fine but output audio is down. It's not terribly low, it's just not up where it should be. I don't want a "power mike" or anything that will overdrive the unit but the modulated audio could definitely use some tweaking. Thanks, David
  4. Yes, I think that's the problem. I need to get back under the top box and pull the CB to get the model number. I found a post elsewhere that referred to adjusting the modulation on the Clarion radios, but there were different instructions for different models. The older units mod level was tuned with VR-201 and the newer units were tuned with VR-101 and VR-102 specifically: 1. Set Cb channel to CH-20 (27.205 MHz) 2. Connect low frequency oscillator to MIC-IN terminal or the DIN connector, and set the oscillator's output to 1kHz, 100mV. 3. Adjust VR102 so that the depth of modulation at this time 70% (Max Mod. CW=+) 4. Set the oscillator's output 1kHz, 10Mv. 5. Adjust VR103 so that the depth of modulation at this time becomes 50% (Mod. CCW=+). I definitely would not recommend anyone do this unless you have the knowledge and skills to make such adjustments to your radio. It would be very easy to mess up your radio -or- cause spurious harmonics if you overdrive it. David
  5. Goose....thanks for the info. My wife and I use J&M HS-BCD279-UN Dual Mode headsets. I've tried both headsets with the same result. The mic is definitely aimed toward my mouth and touching my lips. The audio is very clear, just not very loud compared to the others in our group who are using Midland 75-822 handheld units. There was also a post on here awhile back from another venturerider member who reported the same problem with his CB. If yours is nice and loud, I wonder what kind of headset you're using? If I can find a Goldwinger who will let me plug his headset in for a test, that would be good too. There should be no relation between the IC and the CB's transmit audio output. I've been a ham radio operator for 30 years so I do have a pretty good working knowledge of communications. I've searched the web and it appears that the Gold Wings actually use the same (or similar) Clarion CB that the Venture does and some wingers have also reported the low level modulation. This may not be a problem that affects all RSV CB units, however, if I could get hold of the schematics I would like to increase the modulation level. Thanks, David
  6. The other members in my riding group say the audio from my CB is a lot lower than everyone else. The audio is crisp and clear, but just not very loud. The receive audio is fine, it's just the transmit audio that doesn't have much punch. I have a 2009 RSV and have checked and double-checked all of the connectors and they're all good. I've also replaced the OEM antenna with a Firestick FireFly and the SWR is 1.2 to 1 and I have a good signal. I'd like to avoid taking the bike to Yamaha service until I absolutely have to. I'd rather fiix it myself. Has anyone found a solution to this problem. Have you tweeked the modulation pot on the Clarion circuit board? Does anyone have a schematic of the Clarion CB unit or can tell me the number of the modulation potentiometer on the board? Thanks guys, David K4ZZR
  7. I've got the second one too (97841-1VGA) and it holds the RSV very securely. It's bolted to the floor of my garage and I ride it up on the chock whenever I want to check the oil. If I were going to do any real work to the bike I'd strap it down too, just for safety's sake. It's solidly constructed and for $80 you really can't go wrong. I've also got a Condor chock on my trailer, and I like it because it's easy to remove, but it was a LOT more expensive. David
  8. Thanks for the extra info and in depth explanation. I added a ground loop filter to the audio system under the fairing a couple weeks ago. I'll have to check that. Otherwise, I checked my wife's mic and it's aiming correctly. I didn't mention that we're both wearing J&M headsets. I guess it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I have my Zumo attached to the audio system and can turn the MP3 music up or down with my volume control. I can turn the FM radio volume up or down with the volume control. I can turn the CB volume up or down with the volume control. I just can't turn the intercom volume up or down with the volume control. Thanks guys, David
  9. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but I just want to be sure about this. Is the only way you can adjust the intercom volume of your passenger, by using the IC setting on the audio head? You can't adjust the intercom volume by using the Volume control on the side of the audio head? Again, it just seems strange that the passenger can adjust how loud she hears the driver by using the passenger's volume control, but the driver can't adjust how loud he hears the passenger, except by going into the IC option?   10. Thanks guys for the input....I already knew about selecting IC and adjusting the intercom volume, but after I do that, can I adjust the intercom volume by turning the volume control? She can turn her intercom up or down (from the passenger volume control knob), so it seems like I should be able to do the same thing. Doesn't seem quite fair that she can turn me down (literally). In other words, sometimes I can barely hear my wife and I need to turn the volume up so I can hear her, and sometime she's too loud and I need to turn it down. Right now the IC setting is at Max and she's not very loud and turning the volume control has zero effect. Thanks, David
  11. Seems like I used to be able to adjust the intercom volume with the knob on the audio control box, but last time we road 2-up I couldn't turn the intercom up or down. I know there's an IC setting on the audio box, but isn't the intercom volume adjustable with the volume knob too? My wife can adjust how loud she hears me with her volume control on the passenger's seat, but for some reason I can't adjust mine. I'm running a Zumo GPS with MP3 and can adjust the volume to it and the radio fine. Also, all of the connectors under the fairing have already been pulled and dielectric applied. David
  12. I sometimes have the hard shifting, banging gears and trouble getting my RSV into neutral, so would my solution be exactly the opposite -- make the rod a little longer? Or is there another way to make sure the clutch is fully engaging? David
  13. Same here....just installed a Scorpio i900 on my 09 RSV. I especially like the perimeter alarm - keeps little hands from getting too close to my bike. Pretty easy to install, but you've got to figure where you want to put the main unit. I put mine under the passenger seat and it works great there. David
  14. Right now I've got zero in the front and 25 in the rear. That's really wierd that you're 5'6" and can flat foot your RSV. Are you fully sitting on the seat? If I scoot forward on the seat I can flat foot it too, but I'd rather stay in a sitting position at the lights. Thanks for you input, David
  15. Hmmm, if some of you guys who are shorter than me can flat foot your bike....then maybe it's the extra few inches of fat in my ass. This may be the final nudge I needed to go on that diet! David
  16. I had my dealer lower the front of my 09 RSV about a week ago. The bike does seem to feel a bit lower on the front and maybe handling is a little better, although I didn't have much problem with slow speed riding before. The main reason I wanted to lower the front 1" was to help flat foot at stop lights. Unfortunately I don't really notice much difference after the mod. I could always put one foot down flat and the other foot was touching except for the heel which was still about 1/2" off the pavement. I'm 5' 11" and not sure what my inseam is. Now I'm wondering if my dealer actually lowered the front (paranoia setting in). I can't remember how they looked before but the top of the fork tubes (air valves) are about 1" above the triple tree....would that confirm that the bike was actually lowered? Thanks guys, David
  17. Heard back from John at Clearview and they're having the windshield picked up so their production guys can take a look at it and let me know what's up. Thing is, I waited so long for it, and now with shipping and inspecting and making a new one and shipping it back to me, I'm looking at another month or more. I think I'll just return it and maybe go for one of the F4customs shields instead. David
  18. Tried taking some photos last night but my cheap camera didn't do a very good job. I couldn't get any shots of traffic coming toward me because the cars were moving (duh) and just blurred across the image. So, I took a shot of some street lights in a parking lot, shooting through the Clearview at the area causing the "ghosts". The photo (below) doesn't show the ghosts very well but they're much brighter than the picture shows. http://site.gps-planet.com/photos/ghost.JPG
  19. I took the bike out for another ride tonight to do a little test. I'm 5' 11", but if I were about 2 or 3 inches shorter I wouldn't even see the refracted ghosts. Apparently I'm right in the sweet (or should that be sour) spot where I'm getting these anomolies. Wonder if I could take a photo of them.....hmmm, that might be interesting. David
  20. Thanks for the suggestion RossKean but the ghost lights are still there with or without a helmet on and I laid a towel over the tank just to be sure. I do have a little bit of reflection from the gas cap but not that bad. David
  21. Thanks for the info guys. Mine also has the vent, but it's not tinted. I already got an email from John at Clearview and he's going to run it by production to see what they say. By the way, I'm not sure when Clearview started making their shields with all holes and no slots, but that's how this one came. Maybe they made other design changes that could be causing the problem. I'm removing it and putting the stock shield back on. Too dangerous with the way it is. Thanks again for you input. David
  22. Received my new Clearview XXL windshield for my RSV and there might be a problem. For some reason at night I am getting a LOT of refraction (not reflection) from oncoming headlights causing them to appear double. It's like there's two sets of headlights, a second "ghost" set appearing about 3 to 6 feet below the real ones. It's really annoying because the lights are being refracted all the way across the shield in my vision. If I lower my head several inches I can make the refracted lights go up until they are on top of the actual headlights. I noticed earlier in the day that I could see a bit of distortion through the shield's sweep about 4" below the top when I moved my head up or down so maybe that's the problem. Or I was wondering if it's the extra thickness of the plastic that causing the refraction. I have a Clearview on another bike but don't have any refraction like I do on the new shield. Anybody else run into this problem? I just emailed Clearview and waiting for a reply. David
  23. I have the $59.99 one from Harbor Freight, made by US General, model 97841-3VGA. It's very sturdy and easily holds my RSV securely upgright. LINK David
