  1. Thanks Dingy, I know am a little more knowledgable regarding Honda Moly60 and lithium soap grease! If I understood what I read you would use the soap in high temp applications such as the splines in the drive shaft? What is a popular brand?
  2. Been reading everything I can regarding the maintenance for the drive shaft. Little confused on the two type of greases mentioned? Molybdenum disulfide grease is what? Is that the Honda Moly60? Which applications would you use it for? Lithium soap base grease is what? What brand is recommended? Which applications would you use it for? Hate being ignorant! Thanks!!
  3. Thanks Freezyrider and RandyR exactly what I was looking for!! Mine is a 2005 RSTD.
  4. Just bought my first ct and need to find info. on what lift is recommended and what to do to the splines(?) and shaft drive while my tire is being changed. I know there is a viscous debate regarding ct's which I have no interest in just want to do everything that needs to be done while I have that tire off! Thanks All!
  5. Yes, Thank You! I had forgotten about those and I will order today. What about the splines and lubing the shaft drive? Wasn't there an article about that here somewhere? Is Sears the best place for the lift? Thanks All!
  6. Thanks Guys, ordered my 1st ct for my 2005 RSTD Kumho POWER STAR 758 165/80 R15 87T BSW after reading from your posts http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=135&Cookie=nextag_Kumho&details=Ordern&typ=KH_5387&ranzahl=4&nichtweiter=1 The local Honda dealership will change the tire for me I just have to get it off my bike: Any suggestions for the lift? While I got her panties down what else should I be doing? (I know, I know! I am setting myself up for all kind of educational input here!)
  7. Been traveling the US and Canada since July 10th! Should be home to Destin, FL by the time you start traveling! Destin is about 50 miles west of Panama City, FL along the coast. Would love to share ice cream, coffee, and swap travel experience with you when you come through our area!! Be safe
  8. The threaded rod, which I call an all thread, unscrewed from the ball. The all thread, nut, and lock washer are gone. The ball itself was still attached to the trailer hitch which I now have as a souvenir. Hope this helps! So you are a 3 jump commando! You should know there is no such thing as a perfectly good airplane!!
  9. I did not sleep well last night cause I was considering the responses regarding my trailer size from yesterday. This morning it was neat to see others who see trailering as I do. I know my trailer does not fit the "norm", it fits me! I spent all of last year working on her welding, painting, greasing the bearings, and learning everything I could about trailering. Upon finishing my project I found that my tongue weight exceeded what most considered safe. Upon advice from members here I re-engineered the trailer and bought a heavy duty hitch. The results: 7,854 miles since July 10th. Attained the summit of Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina on Blue Ridge Parkway. Attained the pass on Mt. Bighorn near Cody, SD at elevation 9666' Got 44mpg near Bend, Oregon driving at a consistent 63mph on a calm windless day. Got 26mph driving 80mph on a terrible windy day along the Interstate in Idaho. Have had to emergency brake several times due to cars pulling in front of me. All of that and never knew the trailer was behind me. Please before anyone says yhea, but the trailer came off in went into a ditch. The part that came undone was assembled by the manufacturer. It had little to do with the size of my trailer. It would be the same as saying "See I told you Motorcycles are dangerous that's why your front tire blew!" You most remember I use to jump out of airplanes, actually as a jumpmaster I use to throw people out of airplanes! Dangerous? You bet! Exciting? You bet! I know some will never agree with me on any of this. OK, I respect your opinions, and I thank you for trying to help all of us stay safe. This thread, I hope, is about the kindness that can still be found out in a world where it always seems to be about greed, fear, and hatred. Yhea, I ain't buying that either! It's about how proud I am about my trailer and the heck with you naysayers!!!
  10. Here are the pictures to complement the story! I have considered all the what if scenarios and have to agree with everyone here. As a previous pilot I go through a pretty good pre- ride check list each morning before riding. Even as careful as I have been I was not careful enough. Glad I try to live as God wants me to. That is the only reason I am able to send emails today!!
  11. Driving my trailer across the US and Canada has gotten a lot of attention from people everywhere. One the questions I am always asked is "How does she pull?" My response has always been: "I do not even know she is back there!" That proved true yesterday evening! We where 2 miles from our exit for the evening when my girlfriend pounded me on the back "The trailer has come off" I look in my mirror and sure enough the trailer is sliding down US 101 Pacific Hiway and no longer being towed by mau! I never felt the trailer come off the hitch and if my girlfriend had not heard it come off we would just keep on going. We pulled off the side of the highway and watched as the trailer continued to slide first down the road, then onto the shoulder, and then off into the ravine! I am sitting there wondering what happened? and why didn't the safety chains kick in? and thank God no one is hurt! I ventured down into the ravine to the overturned trailer. Our gear was scattered here and there but the trailer was intact. Upon inspection I saw that the alltread of the hitch ball had come undone. That explained what happened. Looking closer I saw that the bracket which the safety chains were attached to was secured to the all thread. When that came off so did the safety chain bracket. In retrospect I am really glad that happened! I had a clothes line which I attached to my bike and used to body reppel into the ravine to retrieve most of our gear! Unfortunately The clothes line was not strong enough to haul the trailer up out of the ravine. It was funny but I was not really concerned. I mean, it was just stuff, no one was hurt. In situations like this I really put a lot of trust in God! Sure enough within a half hour a man named Jim stops to help. Jim owns a Kal Vulcan. He does not have a rope but he does call someone who does. That turns out to be Dennis and his son, Russ, show up and they have a hoist. Very soon after the trailer is back on the shoulder. I have no way of reattaching her to the bike but no biggy. Dennis and Russ have a 1 7/8" ball hitch on their 4 wheeler, just no tools. They go get tools return and help me install the ball. They both, of course, are bike riders to. Will not accept payment! By then two hours have elapsed! CHIP has shown up, another bike rider has shown up and everyone is helping. The trailer has minor damage at best, scractes and one hinge is partly damaged, and I have gotten into some poison oak. God really does love me. We are back on the road continuing our journey through out the US!
  12. I have taken my trailer on the "Summer 09 Tour" and I am proud to say it has been a success so far. The trailer, "Rosemary", has tacked the Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive, Pennsylvania rural area, winds of Lake Erie, the rough roads of Buffalo, and she is negotiating New England over these next couple days! Her proudest moment was reaching elevation 6578, at the top at Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina. Her locomotive, "Rachel (05 RSTD), has had no problems pulling her averaging anywhere from 38mpg to 43mpg depending on the terrain, speed, and wind conditions. She does not know she pulling anything unless we hit a bump! The setup gets a lot of comments and picture taking from people we meet! I have pointed everyone in the direction of "VentureRider.org" telling them this is the place where I brainstormed, researched, and got sound advice on the while renovating her and overcoming the initial design flaws. Later this week we will be adventuring in Nova Scotia, Northern Maine, and the Canada. After that I thought we would head west and try out some more mountains!! Thanks all!!
  13. Well the trip so far has been a blast!! Love the Blue Ridge Parkway. Found the North Carolina portion very instructional and was quite pleased when the RSTD haul the trailer up to Mt. Mitchell at 6300ft elevation (or thereabouts) The BRP thru Virginia was fantastic! I was able to relax a little and enjoy the senery. I found the back roads of Pennsylvania heaven! Actually found ourselves in Dairy country. Nigara Falls was a zoo! To many people and to commercialized. Glad I went, but never again. We have had to contend with some rain, but nothing dishearting. Or biggest issues have been getting an early start and trying to stay out of Walmart!! I think, now though we have all the gear worked out and late starts, when your bewteen jobs, does not really matter! Tonight we are at Four Mile State Park, NY. Tomorrow we are going to the Reinnesance Festival in Sterling, NY then it is on to New England then Nova Scotia! I could use some info on Camping there in NS.
  14. Going there to, God willing! Spent childhood at Loring AFB, Maine so I have to go through Newfoundland (sp?) to get there from Nova Scotia, I think? Bottom line I going through Newfoundland and hopefully taking my time while there!!
  15. Ended my job, placed the few possessions I have in storage, those that would not fit on the bike, and started the 09 Summer Tour today! Drove 366 miles out of Florida through Alabama finally stopping at James H. (Sloppy) Floyd State Park near Rome, GA. 366 miles in great weather, Bike with loaded trailer averaged 38mpg, not a bad day! Plan on seeing Lee University in Cleveland, TN, the Cherokee Nation in Cherokee, NC, and hitting the Blue Ridge Parkway tomorrow! Before this ends hope to visit Nova Scotia, Vancouver and everything in between. Should be a great summer! Visiting this site constantly for advice, insight, and recommendations helped in preparing the bike and trailer for this trip! Thanks to all!!
  16. Try Destin in the Panhandle! Water is crystal clear and warm. The beaches are white sand which will act as a frying pan if you are not careful! I spent a lot of time growing up along the eastern seaboard from Maine to Georgia and I have not found anything as beautiful as Destin! We get a lot of Snowbirds here during the winter.
  17. Yhea Freebird! What's up with that!!
  18. Like your logo, Venture-Sole!!
  19. OK, well I'm finished! Got lucky and found some old end caps at the local Harley Davidson. The parts person spent 15 minutes in the back rummaging around and produced some Screaming Eagle cut end caps that where "ALMOST" the same size. Spent the afternoon modifying them to fit and I am very pleased!! Thanks to Freebird, the parts person at the HD place, Gary N., PERM44, Bluesman, arnesbay, and Sylvester!
  20. It is amazing what can be accomplished after walking away from a problem! After a good nights sleep and good advice from everyone I was able to dislodge these end caps! I posted pictures so the next guy can see what he is getting into assuming he lacks experience as I did. I hate using force unless I know what I'm doing and in this case I did not. I was relying on everyone's good advice. Taking my time I used a nail claw and hammer to dislodge the end cap. Came off easily enough after about the 8th blow. The claw was small enough that it fit right into the joint and I was able not to mar up the end cap. Now I have the option of refinishing it. So I am in the market for new end caps! Any suggestions? I need to blow the exhaust downward since my girlfriend is complaining of fumes. Pipes have been checked and there is no exhaust leak. Im thinking of these, http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/13/118/7691/ITEM/Bub-Slash-Cut-Billet-End-Cap.aspx but would really like to get other opinions first! Thanks everyone for the help!!
  21. Excuse my ignorance, but where, on the cap, did you strick? The joint, the holes at the rivets, all over! I'm not concerned about damage to the cap either, just want to know the most efficient way to get her off! Coated the joint with WD40 to sit over night. Any other suggestions? Thanks!!
  22. Thank you, sir! You need to color in Florida on your map one of these days!!
  23. need some help here. i am trying to remove Bub end caps. I have drilled off the two rivets but cannot seem to get the puppy to come lose? Help!
  24. Mounted the FM receiver onto the chrome housing above speedometer. Not quite a perfect fit but acceptable. I attached speakers to the "Big Willies" cup brackets I have. Perfect Fit. I then reattached my cups using 1/2 Dia. electrical conduit clamps! My IPOD I atached to the cups with velcro! I replaced the audio cord with a 12" audio cord I picked up from Radio Shack. Very happy with the entire project and will add some pictures shortly! Sound is fantastic although I have found that at stop lights everyone tends to look over from their cars because the music might be to load. I keep the volume around 15 and sometimes push it to 22. Have not tried it at full blast 30 yet!
  25. I took my "Barefoot Willie" cup holders and turned them into brackets for my speakers I just purchased: http://www.gooddeals18.com/category/motorcycle_audio/ The speakers did not come with any brackets in which to mount to the bars. The cup holder brackets worked perfectly. I then used some electrical conduit brackets and reattached my Barefoot Willie cup holders! Turned out very nice without looking junky! So I recommend these McGiver cup holders!!!
