Buy the RSV. Half the fun of putting on the extras is in getting them. Once they are in place the fun seems to diminish. So it takes longer, so what! You know the real value in an item is in it's cost, time it takes to get it, difficulty in keeping\installing it eh? If it were simple and easy, the value would go down,,,,, get my drift? Maybe talk to Dan, he might have just what you would like?

And oh,, the alignment set-up? 1 piece of 1x2 lumber, 2x8" magnetic laser levels (identical), 2 racket straps, 1 marker, 1 pencil and 2 jack stands and a crows foot wrench set to make it easier. Time for complete setup and adjustment, about 1 hr. And oh oh,,, the drive belt is too long and tends to vibrate, so needs an idler pulley. Also the tension is too strong according to specs, so that needs to be adjusted to work better otherwise it's too hard on the bearings. Made my own idler for less than $100.

Didn't know if we did the right thing when we changed over to the Spyder. Did we buy a better quality machine? will it last as long as a Venture? will it gives us problems that would make us wonder? Not sure of the answers, but as mentioned CanAm has been in this business for a while, so reliability should be ok, so we took that assumption, and only time will tell.. The 3 cylinder is a different machine than the 2 cylinder, that's the big reason we bought it, it runs smoother. We spent a day on the 2 cyl and found the vibration to be tiring and annoying, especially since we still owned the Venture I guess. The 3 cyl has power to spare and is real good on gas. Oil change is every 15k km so no issue there even though it takes a while to do. Tires are not so good, not happy with the Kenda so switched to Kumo, and now much better wear and happy with the tracking,,, CanAm says not to switch, but I don't read all that well at times. Not easy to find the right size for the rear so I down sized a bit on width but kept the same rolling distance. Alignment is an issue, but I designed my own set-up and now am very happy. Most Spyders need some toe-in to correct the problem and in my case the dealer was out to lunch and not very helpful,,, oh well, I didn't buy it for them to work on anyways. The trailer hitch that is designed for this unit looks bat ugly so I modified mine, and not it's acceptable. caution though, the hitch is hooked to the axle so reaction in the trailer is much different, especially the beer in the cooler on the tongue. Cans and bottles end to suffer some what. We find the ride is as good or better than the Venture, but there is a learning curve in the twisties. Not only do you not get to lean, you actually tend to lean in the opposite direction. You get the feeling somebody is trying to through you off. It takes a bit to get used to how to handle that issue, but once you do you wonder why it took so long for somebody to discover this amazing piece of work. Advantage is, you can lead the pack, get through the twisties and have an ice cream before the rest get there. If you end up in the back of the pack, you'll just have to pass them first. I thought I would miss my hiway pegs, so was ready to spend the big bucks getting a set. This guy is Dutch though, so I needed to be assured that I really needed them. I now have 30k km on this baby, but still no pegs, so I guess for me it's money in the bank for now. There's lots of luggage room, but you need to figure out what goes where. We do miss our 1st gen big trunk on day trips, but getting used to it. On long trips we always take a trailer anyways. It is said that the radio, cb, and stereo don't integrate. We added a Zumo, and a JMCB2003 and have no issues. Zumo plays through headsets as well speakers, Cb is headsets only so far, and the radio is either, although all controls are separate. The radio\amp far outclasses anything on a Venture. 'Course they didn't have to spend any money on a cassette deck. Lighting is awesome, windshield is a bonus, horn is wimpy, side lighting can be improved, cruise works well and the gauges are just fine. Anything else?

I think Bobby is seriously hurt. Yep he fell down, and you can just imagine the tremor that might have caused. He actually took his camera and then totally failed to take pictures,,,falling down on the job we call that here. Guess we'll have to get a stand-in, just in-case we get him mesmerized again,,, he just couldn't seem to get over the look of real money,, what a guy!!! Thanks all for coming out. I had a great time and thought it well worth the effort,,, maybe do it again sometime. Now they say that pictures are worth a thousand words and if there where some pictures it would\could have saved a lot of talk. So two thoughts here: 1) seeing as Ben was not in attendance, Bob never even thought of the competition between the words and pictures so his mind slipped completely. 2) seeing as there are no pictures it would only be fair to fill the void with words,,but rest easy folks, it'll take a while for that to happen,, i don't type as fast as I can speak,,, so maybe I'll just save it for the next gathering,,,,, unless of course somebody else????? wants to proclaim forth in this thread???>> how are you feeling Ben?

I'm glad I'm retired,,, just gives me the willies looking at that fool video,,,, wondering who in their right mind would put up such a structure and who took the forming off once the concrete set, and did they carry it down to use again, or just drop it,,,, did they take a lunch and where oh where did they go,,,,, well you know, everybody needs to do that eh?

Another one bites the dust, I'm not Ventureriders anymore.

You could have told us last night,,, why so mummm chum,,,, I didn't speak that long so there was lots of time to stand up and give all of your closest buddies the inside. Now I'll have to come there myself in person. -
It will be nice to you all, but great if we get see all of you!

First off I would try tapping the buckets. There is a lot of tension, or should be a lot of tension on them to try to get them to return, so a little tapping might work. You may also try a little heat in that area. use a propane torch and carefully heat the entire area. You need to clean the oil out of the way first. Use a can of brake clean and then wait for a while for that to dissipate. This will also call for an oil change.

Something I think you overlooked. Hose going from fuel pump to carb!. Suggest replacing that hose. Sometimes the rubber inside that hose breaks down and causes nothing but troubles. So may I suggest, you once more remove and clean the carbs, making super sure you have the right jets in the proper spots, replace the hose and be happy. My guess is that you have a bit of rubber stuck in there,, wouldn't take much. -
Can't pull clutch lever after changing clutch
Marcarl replied to Trader's topic in General Tech Talk
That just doesn't make any sense. When the master is released then the slave should be able to be pushed back, if it won't then there is a problem with the master. Maybe a good cleaning is in order before you get some problems with it. -
Good looking machine, hope you all enjoy it. Couple of things to put under your hat: If you feel the belt vibrate, you can try to adjust the tension. What is in the manual is too tight and causes bearing wear in the rear wheel and the engine. So it's set somewhat loser, but that might give problems at certain speeds. The answer to that is an idler pulley halfway down the belt to take up slack. Called a 'smooth spyder', but I built my own,,, way cheaper. The other is alignment. If you get a tire vibration, or it won't track straight on it's own, the alignment will most likely need more toe-in. Played with that one for a year before I got it right. Scrap the Kenda tires, I went with Kumo instead. Same size on the front but a wee bit narrower on the rear.

Freebird's Maintenance Day - Do we want to do it?
Marcarl replied to Freebird's topic in Watering Hole
How is everybody gonna ogle my Spyder if MD doesn't progress,,, oh wait,, that was last year. I will be there!!! Friday night for dinner and then maybe all day Saturday. Marca would be disappointed if I didn't go,, gives her a chance to 'clean up' my shop with wood dust. Now if it decides t rain again???? well the maybe,, just maybe, I'll have to wear some rain-gear. -
Your left cylinder butterfly is open. Seen this happen lots of times. You need to start from scratch making sure that the butterfly is fully closed to start with. The bolt is not torqued into the bearing cap so maybe easily removed with a pick,,, maybe,,,, try it. Seeing as the bolt shoulder seats there should be no pressure on the threads. If not, take out the cap, remove the bolt, and re-install. Torque as close as you can to specs.

So, aren't we trying to discourage texting and driving?
Marcarl replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Oh come on guys,,, really!!! how could I do without my phone, even for a minute!!! somebody might tweet something about me and it might even be good,,,, I need to know ASAP. Another good way for clearing out the gene pool,, too bad the pool often drowns the unsuspected. -
Can't pull clutch lever after changing clutch
Marcarl replied to Trader's topic in General Tech Talk
Did you happen to pull the clutch handle when you had the basket apart, if you did, then maybe you pushed the piston out too far and now is stuck. I would think that the slave would leak in such a case though. To check this out you might check the unloaded position of the push rod. I think it needs to be flush with the boss, or nearly so, so if it's sticking out so that you could grab it with a pair of pliers then that might be the case. -
If you have had the pumpkin off then there is a proper procedure on reinstall. Did you follow that procedure? Install pumpkin, do not tighten bolts. Install wheel and rotate the shaft to where it feels the easiest to rotate. Snug up shaft. Now tighten pumpkin to driveshaft tunnel and lastly torque the axle shaft.

Thanks Raggie, I hadn't noticed the omission.

Grease fitting on drive shaft cover
Marcarl replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It's supposed to be able to provide some grease to the shaft spline. Actually just makes a bigger mess for you when you pull the pumpkin off. Grease both ends of the shaft spline with proper molly grease and you're good to go. I use Lucas x-heavyduty wheel bearing grease, as well as on the wheel spline. -
You can reuse them, but you run the risk, high risk, of having coolant bleed into the oil and ruining the whole engine. There just is too much pressure in the cylinders for goop to hold. And then there is heat and pressure from the coolant side, all the while during running, even when the piston is on the intake stroke and puts the cylinder under vacuum. Best to find a way to trailer it.

You put the washer in the wrong spot. Don't ask me exactly where or how, check the diagrams in the book, I just remember doing it wrong. It doesn't go in logical sense. -
I got lucky the other day, went to the Indian Reserve and paid $3.10 us gal. At the pumps here today it's $3.59 us gal. I thought that was cheap,,,, heck with trump, I'm moving to the states,, anybody got a house for sale?
