Got that rear gear hub wear thing goin on?? I did....
Flyinfool replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
20 thou is a lot to be worn off the mating spline. At least to me anyhow. I would take a gander at Tweeks mating spline and pick the best one. Once the wheel is off, swapping rear ends is easy. -
Thoughts to ponder about MD from Michigans west coast..

After the nice winter we just had would it even be safe for me to blink, let alone dare to fall asleep with all you MI lop eared varmints all in the same place with me???? I seem to remember some mentions of tar and some feathers.......... -
E4 is almost always cracked solder that can not be seen with the naked eye. It is faster to just reflow all of the joints than it is to try to find the cracked one. And even if you do find the cracked one and fix just it, another one may crack putting it back together, and then you get to start all over. A little touch of Rosin flux on each joint will help to float away any impurities in the solder and make it all easier and better.

Looking to purchase a '99 XVZ1300
Flyinfool replied to BlackOpsBBQ's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The carbs on my 88 have never needed to come out yet, so I would call that not needing a lot of maintenance. As far as a good sync, EFI also needs to get synced regularly for the same reasons. As mentioned as long as you take care of the carbs they will need little to no work done for many years at a time. Taking care just means avoiding ethanol gas if you can (I can not), and using a cleaner in the gas every once in a while (Most here use Seafoam), and changing the fuel filter before you HAVE to and proper winter storage.- 4 replies

Wolo horns question
Flyinfool replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
3 feet to 6 feet is a big difference, I see it everyday using a Db meter. does not matter if it is 4" to 8 inch or 40 feet to 80 feet, the sound level still halves. Yup, time to break out the multi meter and find out what is really happening. -

Wolo horns question
Flyinfool replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Are you testing loudness with the horn in the same location? if you double the distance you reduce the sound level by half. so if when it is connected to the stock wires it is 2 feet from your ear then you mountit lower with the relay at 4 feet from your ear then it should sound half as loud. Location can also have a big impact on sound. It could be the location that is making it sound less loud. -
Wolo horns question
Flyinfool replied to baylensman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A couple of things to check 1. Is the polarity of the wires going to the horn correct? 2. What size wire did you use from the battery to the relay and the relay to the horn? What size ground wire? -

If you are making replacement cables, the thing to use is #4 AWG welding cable, you can get the cable and terminals from most welding supply houses. The cable that Yamaha used is to small and drops voltage. -
I was thinking of starting at 2-2.5K and see where it goes from there. I decide when I see how good it looks once it is all cleaned up. Dang was I tempted to try to take it out for a spin today..................

So I guess then that if everything on the property is level regardless of what that level is, then it is not considered a hole eh? I guess I could say they are road flares...... Or use C4 and say it is silly putty?

Would they let me bring a case or 2 of DYNAMITE across the border. Get that stump out in a big hurry and move it to a neighbor a few blocks away....

Hydraulic clutch stuck!?
Flyinfool replied to davidandersin1st's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You never did answer as to why you had the clutch pack out in the first place. If you are replacing the clutch because it was slipping, it is common for a slipping clutch to be a weak spring with the clutch just fine. A new clutch with the old weak spring will still slip. The springs die of old age, not miles of use. -
I started the preparations for putting my '88 up for sale. Put in the new battery, it took 3 cycles to fill the float bowels, started on the first revolution of the engine, Ran a bit rough for the first minute or 2 and smoothed right out as all of the storage oil and stuff worked its way out. Then I started sanding down the one blue side bag cover to paint it to match the rest of the bike. Once that is done a good wash and wax and it will be ready to list for sale. Some one will get a good ready to go bike with a lot of custom features that were never offered for sale.

I commend you for still being able to learn, AND admit to it. I still hope to learn something new every single day. Now for some of the science to help you understand what you have learned. 1. The LED light element is probably actually brighter than the Silver star element. 2. LEDs have a directional light output, where incandescent is a full 360° spherical light output. 3. your lens and reflector were designed to use a full 360° of light to fill the pattern. 4. You noticed that there was more side fill with the LED, There is also more vertical spill with the LED, This due to the lens and reflector not getting the light from the expected directions. 5. All the spill makes thing up close very bright, fooling less observant people into thinking the LED is far brighter. when they fail to notice that there is less available light down the road. 6. Some LEDs focus so badly that they actually have close foreground objects bright enough to cause your night vision to go away making it even harder to see down the road. 7. Due to the light spill at the top of the beam, it appears to the uninformed that they are seeing farther when in actuality they are effective have the light pattern of the hi beam when set at lo beam, that is why there is little if any difference between Lo and Hi beam. this is also why the blind oncoming traffic, that last thing I want while on a bike is to be blinding someone that is closing on me at well over 100MPH and hoping they will pass safely just a few feet to my left. All of this info usually falls on deaf ears if I bring it up before someone takes the plunge. There is just to much hype from those that do not understand, Those of us that do understand are in a small minority so we must be wrong. I have watched reviews done with real light meters that scientifically proved all of this to be true They tested numerous brands and models of LED lights, HID lights and incandescent lights all in the same car and all on the same road and also in the lab to see the beam pattern on a big white wall, they also measured the light output and many places on the wall. The most interesting part was in the comments after, A scary number of people said that this confirmed that they will buy the worst performing bulb because it was the brightest. at 5 feet. but was so out of focus that there was no difference at all between hi and lo beam and it was totally blinding all oncoming traffic. Oh by the way, the real winner of the testing was a HID in a dedicated projector housing. #2 was a HID in a stock lens/reflector. #2 was a LED in a dedicated projector housing #4 was a stock Halogen bulb and housing #5 on down was all of the LEDs in a stock housing. #2 and #2 were a mathematical tie. The differences were within the margin of error of the test equipment. I wish I could find that again, It was about a 45 minute video that someone put a lot of time and money into. OK my:rant: is over for now. Back to your regularly scheduled programming......

Puc, believe it or not I have a whole box of those little .049 motors. I have one that I souped up enough to log 119 MPH on a radar gun. Got it to hold together at 36,000 RPM (not a typo). As for Snypers vision of the 3rd gen, I have been eyeing that up for my daily 45 miles of commuting especially since I can no longer ride the venture. Or maybe an electric version. Or just go for it and strap on the pulse jet.................... Now, Back from the thread Hi Jack, I sure hope that your new red (bestest fastest color ever) SVTC is everything you hoped for and more. For me the jury is just starting to get seated. But then I am a cynical old Fool that can not take much of anything on faith. -
Lucky you, I am wanted by the IRS for 4 legal actions against my name. Fortunately the nice lady on the phone told me that I can pay the fines off with Amazon gift cards. This or the police will be at my door in just 1 hour from now....... Good thing Amazon has same day delivery......... But at least it took her 25 minutes (I was starting to think this could rival a personal record) to explain this all to me before the line suddenly went dead. I figure that was at least 5 or 6 people that do not understand such things that were saved from losing a lot of cash.

You can either rebuild this starter for real cheap, or just swap one from one of your parts bikes. Either way I would add the internal ground mod that Dingy wrote up, It is super cheap and easy to do and it does help. Also gives you a good excuse to open up the starter and clean it out before you put it in. -
Ahh yes, the good old days, when you walked into the gun store, plunked down your cash and walked out the door with your new bundle of joy. Now you can still do a private to private sale with just cash and carry. BUT if you go to buy new, Then there is the background checks and forms to fill out. The background check can be approved, denied or delayed. If it is delayed that means that the computer found something it did not know how to handle and needs a real person to look at it. They have 48 hours to either approve or deny. To deny they must have a valid reason, IF they do noting then it is automatically approved after the 48 hours. Subject to change without notice. I know they are currently working on some big changes, I do not know if they happened yet. I did get my WI CCW just because in @cowpucs home state they have a law that says NO non MI resident may be in possession of a hand gun in the state of MI unless they have a CCW issued by their home state. (I have no clue how they deal with a person from a state that has constitutional carry) I spend a lot of time in the deep woods of upper MI and always pack because I have had run ins with bears, wolves and coyotes. Never had to shoot one yet but was real close a couple of times. There is also a law in MI hunting regs that if you see a feral pig and are in possession of a firearm you are required to shoot it, no hunting license required, I LIKE pork.
