  1. As a long time member here and quite knowledgeable 'bout these motors, of course you both have the starter clutch upgrade done by Squeeze and myself (Morleys sells 'em!) installed on your bikes already,,,right??! BTW, if'n you want the best and most buildable 1200 v4,,,then find an early VIN Venture from '83 and youse will have the reason why the VMax was built. The first six months these bikes were out there Yammamamma figured they was too quick for these 750lb bikes so they detuned the crap out of them. I had an 84 that I rebuilt totally, checked and freshened the engine, back-cut the second gear dog and slot, put 'er back together and she would pull the front tire anytime you wanted. There's also one of us down NC way that'll race any 2wheeler that pulls up next to him on his '85, but he wins 'cause he'll go over 150+ and they won't... Perty good background history is why we do what we do to these things... And that's also why I moved up to a 2nd Gen when I turned 52 because who knows when that sucker wants to go all the way over when you pop that front tire up...
  2. As I'm gettin' a bit older and gettin' back on the road on the bike, I've found that I cain't see good thru the smoked lower screen of the adjustable that's on there now. Wouldn't mind a clear one, but I may just trade out for an original in good shape...
  3. I have been saying this for a while now. Finally just stopping what the doc had me on for 7+ years, Paroxetene. Shuts your ability to think clearly down, And I mean down. Now if OTHERS would stand up and accept/take care of their own responsibilities...
  4. and I appreciate those thoughts I used to decorate the graves of those who gave all with flags back when I was young and a member of the Sons of the American Legion
  5. Dang 'Puc, u did it again,,, you must be gettin' old... TWICE you made some good sense in the las couple weeks
  6. So I guess that I can use it in my bike too?! Been usin' t4 10w40 in the van with 350k on her and still goin' strong...
  7. SteveG, just read your latest. You and I understand the separate components of this designed "self-powered air pump" as to the way it operates which is completely different from your standard carb or jetted "engine" that most understand. I believe this is the first time I've seen it described quite correctly as to the CV thought pattern applied! This ain't no 10k HP fueled rail car designed for maximum air input/output...it's a perty design, just takes a bit of care. I used to have an '84 that would pull the front wheel up whene'er ya wonted to...plenty of scrapes on the bottom of the pegs. Bein' in my early 50's when I moved to the 2nd gen for some sanity
  8. dang Puc', I agree wid ya on sumthin' here.....! This is why my '02 Express 1 ton extended van has 350,000 on the original motor, changed the tranny fluid and filter 1nce at 150k, still completely original exhaust, along with the cracked right exhaust manifold (from 12 yrs ago...) between 6&8, I put in 10w40 diesel oil to take the place of the bearing losses thru wear, keeps your oil pressure above 40 till u notice a bit of loss at idle,,,oils gettin' thin. It's gettin' to the point of exasperation on wonderin' when it will expire, runs so da*n good right now it'll surprise ya on rev up speed at about 7500-8k lbs in it...I've had the 60k replacement long block sittin' in the garage for 2 yrs now. If yur prepared, it never happens,,, Takin' bets on whether the engine or cancer on the body will win this one... See, the technical still exists up in my noggin', but gettin' out here with ya'll ain't come back a lot just yet
  9. I've always had Progressive and they stood up and wrote it for the appropriate amount when I got out of the horsepital And the guy met me where the bike had been kept for me, added a couple things he didn't know about I always think you getz what ya payz for...
  10. Starting back in '77 or so...Kaw H2-750 1st bike, 1st wheelie outside the showroom 1st ride,,,1st speedin' ticket and I was a pizza delivery guy then also. go figure... '06- 84 Standard Venture totally gone thru, would pull the front any time ya wanted to, visited northern Arkansas on it...and wanted to take it out on Redbud when we passed it up in Michigan... Now: since '91- '77 Yam IT400- 325lb dirt bike, new top end 10 years ago, still fun to kickstart it, damn good way to learn how to handle a bike on the road when you run into difficulties (8pt'r 7 yrs ago) '08 RSV silver, (same as the one I'z on) still out in the garage, but only about 4k on it since I got it in '12 Just now only 10,140 miles on her. Huh, gotta change that Forgot, got a 76 DT400 out in the shed to get runnin' so's my son kin ride the IT when I ride the DT an' his girl and daughter can ride on my Big Bear 400 quad...when we go woodin'

  14. Yep, and I'm over that 61 yrs of bein' here now...would LOVE to be back where I was back in '11. We played out in Cody, graduated the boy from high school and married off my daughter all in 1 year! Guess that wore me out and I hadda take a break...
  15. wow, forgot I used to be able to do all that stuff...but if I got into a 1st Gen again,,, it's still in there somewhere! Just like these missing pics!!! Thanx Don, really appreciate it!
  16. Hey, it's only been 7 yrs,,, parts of me is still re-mappin' the dag-gon neurons and pathways in da brain...
  17. Just a couple thoughts here,,, on that second gear at 31k still engaging, that's good but if it hasn't been "undercut" and the washer out on the end of the crank replaced. well,,,,, the "dogs" on 5th gear won't engage fully with the sockets on 2nd gear well enuff to twist that throttle like you're gonna wanna do... been there, done that,,,rebuilt the tranny... Don't know if'n they still exist here, but I think I may have somes pics on the undercut job I did on mine, and it would pull the front wheel in 2nd...an '84 in 'prolly '08 or '09. Freebird?
  18. wow, I am totally downtrodden by this news, Yammer and I always had fun together before my turn of battle on a bike... I shall miss him greatly till we all join up again...
  19. You'd have time to do it here in Indy with the snow coming down...3-5 in the next few hours Was supposed to go up to Anderson to run the Late Model Figure 8 car my son and his friend are gonna run this year The only car to have a 4 link rear suspension,,,set a track record a couple years ago AND SPRING STARTED Tuesday...
  20. We're gonna get 3" or so 'round here...spring starts in an hour!
  21. Hey Snyper, what is it, a "grinding" type noise? If so, ya gots that pesky critter called a cracked up starter clutch. You're most of the way there towards complete diagnoses, of course the rotor bolt has to come off, an electric or air impact helps to just kick it loose. THEN you get to assemble a gear puller on the rotor to pull IT off the crank. Been there for 30 yrs or so, plenty of instruction on here under the starter clutch issues thread in the libraries... Now on the stator, it seems the "noon to 5" area of the windings are a bit "hot" to the eye, shows possible future failure in this area to the windings. You can look all this info up in the libraries on here...plus I'm the guy to talk to about your starter clutch problems, you'll see that in the libraries too. Just glad to help ya here. Dano
  22. Thanx guys, gotta get that ol' brain goin' on a few different levels I've been startin' to miss. Stuff I used to do without havin' to think about it...but I DID turn 60 this year, I guess I can blame the lack of most memory on that... But I see some of ya'll joinin' that group too.....
  23. Well, 6 years and 2 days ago I left the rehab horsepital after a friendly meeting with that 8 pointer. Most of ya know about it. I'm just now understanding those 2 lines at the bottom of my "page" have NOT re-appeared in my subconscious yet and I am starting to miss that. The bike is still here, ready to go whenever, just patiently (I hope) waiting for me... AND I just figured out last week I hadn't re-subscribed to this ol' joint yet this year..... See, my humerous side ain't left yet!
