Ignition woes (maybe)≥÷

Thanks Jeff, I'll get on that now. Hmm, Cudahy. That's up near Jackson MS, right? Don't see it on guggle maps... -

Neil, it's the standard 26H model Yamaha TCI, vacuum is hooked up as original, on the #2 carb intake joint. Paid way too much for the TCI but had to have it. -

Update bazillion and 2: pony'ed up some righteous Somalians for a Yamaha TCIasaurus off ebuy and got in a 90-mile ride today through Jackson and Harrison Counties in Ole Miss. Bike didn't miss a beat. Only two small issues: the speedo cable would intermittently start screeching fairly loudly, and seemed to use more gas than I woulda thunk. The speedo was steady the whole time, and the noise would go away below 40. Sometimes hitting a bump would make it stop, and if I wiggled the gauges it would change pitch. Pulled the innards and regreased; which way does it go, top down or bottom up? It was bottom up so I inserted it from the top, thinking maybe the drive was partially dropping out causing the screech. The fuel may not be an issue, i haven't ridden it far enough yet to tell how much mpg I'm getting. How many miles y'all average per tank? When the Ignitech gets back from the Czech Republic, this TCI will be my live spare. Thanks to all to offered insights on this one, misery loves company. -

Well, the Ignitech is on its way back to the Czech Republic. There's an internal problem causing the ignition to shut down as the box warms up, I'm thinking a loose solder on one of the ground pins. I can apply pressure to the receptacle and get the bike to fire up, remove the pressure and it quits. Installed the replacement stator I got off ebuy. Started right up. Was installing fairing parts in prep for a test ride when it quit. ( Need a smilie for unremitting cursing riiiiight aboooout here). Went inside and had lunch. And cried. Almost. Came out 20 minutes later and it started. Now I'm back to the Ignitech so I went to pull it off the air cleaner where it's Velcroed and it quit. Hmm. I disassembled the harness plug and inspected the female connectors; the blue grounds were both loose on the male pins so I thought that was it. Alas, 'twas not to be. I did verify that, with either blue wire not connected the bike wouldn't fire. But after crimping the female pins so they were gripping the pins well and reassembling the plug, she quit on me about a half mile from the house. More foul words here.So that led to the applying pressure to the receptacle that allowed me to get the bike to run or quit depending on the pressure. Ignitech has a two year warranty so hopefully they will cover this, other than shipment to the Czech Republic. I bought a TCI on ebuy yesterday so I'll have a spare for troubleshooting and emergencies. :mo money: Good thing I know where the wife keeps the money tree. Made of plastic, for some reason... -
With a bike that has sat up lots of bad things can creep in. One of my enduros exhibited similar symptoms and when I took the cover off and disassembled the clutch, I found corrosion on the steel plates from moisture intrusion. It's probably worth a look inside, imho. There's also alot of views on the oil you use in the tranny. Makes a difference with noise, grabbing or slipping, shift smoothness. Still not settled on that question myself. Richard

Engine Noise - do I have a problem?
flyday58 replied to VanRiver's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you sure all cylinders are firing? Almost sounds like one is not. The brown one reminds me of the old RS-1 and RS-2 locomotives that used to trundle past my grandma's house in Tallahassee when I was growing up! -
I read back over your posts but didn't see, have you checked for 12v at the solenoid with the starter button pushed? If it's there then that points to a problem at the solenoid. No power then it's upstream somewhere. The "flasher relay" also contains a starting circuit cut-off relay; I had issues with the wires going into the plug for it. It's behind the headlight with the other relays somewhere, mine was just sitting there.

When you say 'glass fuse box', do you specifically mean the ignition 15 amp fuse? It was the one fuse in my old box that had broken, making intermittent contact. Also take a pic of your 'spaghetti nightmare' and post it here. May not help but, ya know, we're all nosy... Kevin is right in everything. My wiring had been butchered by the PO so broken or badly-patched wires are a real possibility, too. But start with the easy things first as he suggested.

Diaphragm Install Info

Did NOT know this, something else to check/fix when I get home Monday. Or do the 83s have that hole? I see the part #s change from 85 to 86. -

Yes, and yes. The hole in the bolt is a pinhole. -

Two of the heads were boogered up, one really bad, and its threads were stripped, too. So they've been out before. I'll use red loc-tite when i reassemble, got a cover coming. -

Upon further inspection, found what looks like gold metal flake paint on the inside of the stator cover. It's flaking off and definitely magnetic. PO had painted the outside, plus some other parts. Guess he got a good bit of overspray on the inside of this. Who knows. Also found some phenolic chips from the stator floating around, very small pieces, so not worried about that. But this cover is definitely bodged, PO also overtorqued the stator screws, had to use my impact driver to get two most of the way out. So shopping for a cover now. -

I'm hip. There was nothing in the oil when I changed it, not even small flakes or slivers of any kind. Got to change it again here in the next couple of days so I'll try to strain it to look for any other metal. -

Man I hope this is it. Will put it back together tomorrow if I get the time and see what happens. -

Opened up the motor and found a piece of metal across the #2 pickup coil. Could this cause the ignition to fail intermittently? -
Here's some views of the clutch slave cylinder. It's located behind the left rear engine cover. You'll need a 5mm hex wrench or socket to get the two bolts out, they're not easy to see. Break the banjo bolt loose first, 12mm socket. Then scrunch up your toes and hold your mouth just right and it will finally come out. Trust me. I replaced the seals initially but it continued to seep brake fluid so just got a new one. Good now. As for brakes, they were the reason mine was sitting for five or more years. They'd locked up on the PO so he parked it under a leaky shed. I had to ebay all three wheel cylinders, both handlebar master cylinders and the rear master cylinder. The rear broke in half from aluminum rust when I tried to take the servicing bolt out, how's that for too far gone? Got it all off ebay for not too much money. Yours may not be that bad off but mine sure were. Probably shouldn't have put this much money into something in such bad shape. Keeps me out of the bars and hostels, though.

Thanks, hadn't tried that. But the readings are the same: 115.3, 115.3, 116.2, and 112.8. -

Carb Trouble

Try to narrow down which drain tube(s) are dripping to know where to go with it. A little history: have you had the bike long, has it sat up at all? Any info will help. Richard -

So no gas dripping out of the overflow hoses in front of the rear wheel? -
87 Venture Royale front wobble
flyday58 replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm with Peder to start. I'd get the front wheel off the ground and spin the heck out of it, looking for a grabby rotor or brake. I'd also look at that balancing closely, see if it has a heavy spot it seems to like. You should be able to see an out-of-round condition while it turns, it it has one, and trueness of the wheel, rubbing fender, all that kind of stuff. -
