Fuel Tank Arithmetic (I HATE math with a passion!)

Recommended Posts

However....I know SOME guys LOVE to do the numbers........so....

Has anyone crunched the numbers on the mileage/kilometer-age range of a full tank of gas?

I'd be happy to hear a number from anyone, as long as it's specified in either "miles" or "kilometers"......and defined as "from bottom of filler neck to reserve light coming on".......or "bottom of filler neck to stone, cold, empty!"

Just curious how FAR this thing SHOULD actually go on "a tank" of gas. (And, yup, I know it all depends on whether you're hammering it on.....have a tail wind....got big Bertha riding on the back, with Fido and Junior in the sidecar, downhill/uphill, high altitude/Bonneville Saltflats...all those pesky "variables". I'm just looking for "average"....you know, average.)

I know there's probably ample conversation buried SOMEWHERE in here....but I appreciate your patience in not making me dig for it! :-)

Michael,

Just a couple days ago our group went on a ride and I switched to reserve at 187 miles. About 40 miles of that was an escort so it was at 50 mph but the rest was at 70 or above. I was surprised that it did that good. I need to sync the carbs and do some more seafoam again. :thumbsup2:

Wow. That DOES seem good.

That's 300 kliks (up here in metric-land)

I was under the impression that I typically only get to around 250 kliks before my light wants to come on.

Guess I'D better get myself some of that Sea Foam, too!!

(Hey, Prairie Hammer, who synced my carbs way back at that MD? Wadn't you wad it?) :-)

186 miles this past weekend when it started sputtering and I switched on reserve. Had 2 bars left on gauge. No light yet. Took 4.4 gallons, and I didn't top off. Stop filling when it gurgles near filler neck top. No vent holes...stock setup.

42mpg. That's 2 up, mostly 4th gear 55 to 65 mph in slight hills. Fun 2 lane ride.

Previously, I get around 36mpg solo. So me thinks my wrist is being bad when I'm alone. :biker:

I posted a similar question a few years ago - http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?52074-How-far-can-you-go-on-a-tank-of-gas

I also did a chart.

tank capacity.JPG

From the chart... max fuel you can burn thru is 20.5 liters. I've taken mine down to a dry tank so I know. JUST made it to a gas station on our trip thru Montana a couple years ago.

Answer is: Penzon=If one up or two up. Loaded or unloaded, flat land, average speed and so it goes. For me overall average loaded 2 up is right at 165-175. But when I have the boss a couple hours is about all I can get before I start hearing noise.

You could probably figure about 38mpg avg.

I get from 275 to 300kms depending on backroad or freeway riding before the light comes on. Fillup afterwards averages 17 litres.

Thanks, Mark.

I think I remember that the last time I clocked about 245 kliks I filled up afterward with 13 litres.......so, that sounds pretty consistent with yours.

For some strange reason.....I keep getting the sensation that I'm refueling more often than I should be. (keep forgetting to keep more careful track....and as I say.....not a big numbers guy). Maybe I'm just having way too much fun and putting on more kliks than I think. (I know......THAT's what odometers BOTH OF THEM are for, right!?!)

I'll just have to "knuckle down" and pay attention to the details.....maybe on my planned ride up to Ottawa later this month...when I have a good long road in front of me and some NON-stop-and-go running.

Cheers~

I am getting about 265 Kms when the light come on and about 285 kms when I have to go to reserve.. I have pushed it to 360 Kms but do regularly 340..

Thanks for getting back, Wayne.

I take your comment to mean you frequently ride over 50 kliks on Reserve?!?!

Wow. Either you're brave.......or you carry a one-gallon can in your saddle-bag.....or you ride only in "gas-station-dense" terrain! :-)

I wanted to know this too. So, I strapped a 1 gallon gas can on the luggage rack, filled the tank, and went for a ride. Without the extra gallon, I would have been walking at 211 miles.

YMMV :hihi:

RR

YMMV fer shur!

Thanks, Kelly. Now THAT's the kind of scientific research I guess I should have been doing. And now that I think of it......I TOO have a couple of small red cans I could stick in my saddle bags.

I guess the trick is to throw the can on board only when I'm down to reserve....then head for Buffalo and back to squeeze the last 50-75 kliks out of her!

(I'll feel a beer run coming on!! Beck's at $3.99 for a 4-pack of pints, at Rite Aid Drugstore. And those friendly Canadian border dudes virtually ALWAYS let you bring back 18 cans without duty. Now THAT's the kind of math I can get involved in! :-)

actually even though I'm on reserve the guage still has 2 bars.. I will ride till there are no bars or well into 1 bar most times.. Unless I'm on a trip or don't know where the next gas is going to be..

A friend of mine with a RSTD likes to fill up as soon as the fuel gauge shows below 1/2. His reasoning is if he gets some bad gas then it's only a 1/2 tank of bad gas.

If doing all day riding I usually fill up after the low fuel light comes on and by then my butt is ready for a change of position. I do pay more attention to fill up points though if riding in low population areas like Northern Ontario.

Maybe somebody can check my math, but.....I usually get around 36mpg on average riding around town and about 43mpg if I'm strictly highway (did the run into Chicago yesterday...all highway = 42.79)...so by my cipherin' I should expect to get between 190 to 220 miles on a tank (1984 XVZ12DL 5.3 gal tank)
