Cracks starting in intake manifolds
spear posted a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Greetings all. Had my 2004 RSV serviced today. Only 48,000kms on the clock so it doesn't do much work. The mechanic said all was fine, but pointed out that the intake manifolds have developed hair-line cracks that will soon develop to go right through. He reckons they'll last two months until they need replacing. Anybody had any similar experiences? I'm off on a 1,500km three day ride in a month and I'm thinking of having them replaced prior to the ride. If not I think I'll just take a roll of gaffer tape as a back-up. -
There's been a fair bit of PM banter backwards and forwards between me and Dion (djh3) and I thank him for his help, suggestions and offer. I've elected to go another way with my DRLs, by going 'wireless'. Intrigued? I've found COB LED DRLs that have a small wind turbine and generator fitted, and illuminate once the bike hits 30mph. Once they arrive and are fitted, I'll report back. So many possibilities. If they are okay I'm going to fit a couple to the roof racks on my camper van. I'll eventually post a link to the eBay vendor.

Hey Dion. No passing lights. These LEDs will be them - if and when I get them wired up. Have PMd you re: your PM. :-) Spear

My one MAJOR problem with my Voyager outfit was the swing arm bracket on the right side not sitting flat against the swing arm. There was a gap of around 3/8" at the leading edge. Consequently the hose clamp would not stay done up and would slide back towards the axle and the bracket would work loose. First thing I did was put the bracket in a vice, and using a long piece of 1" square tube bend it a little along its entire length. Put it back on the bike and checked it again against the swing arm until I got it flush. Then, using a square file, I cut a shallow groove - same width as the hose clamp - on the underside of the bracket about 1" from the leading edge. Reinstalled the bracket with new hex-head screws and Loctite and put on a new hose clamp. Then, to give it that extra bit of security I applied a second hose clamp, in front of and hard up against the first. That shallow groove 'captures' the hose clamp and prevents any chance of it wanting to slide off. That was 12 months and about 2,000kms ago and nothing has moved. I'm not sure if the original shape of the bracket was not meant to be. I tend to think it was an error, although in the users' manual it looks straight. Maybe it's just a problem with the RSV. Either way, if Voyager is reading this (and I find they tend to check this forum off and in) they might take it on board. I'm extremely happy with my outfit (thanks Annie) and at times when I've thought about removing it and riding au-natural I stop myself and say, "No. Life's good. Life's a Venture. Get on and ride!"

What? White helmets are illegal? Well, that puts me off the road.

Hey folks. I'm sorry if this has been asked previously and I can't find it - - - I need to wire up a couple of LED daylight running lights (DRLs) that I've mounted to the front of my Second Gen RSV. Obviously need to get at the low beam wire of the headlamp. Can somebody please tell me the quickest way of accessing same at the headlamp. I've printed out a wiring diagram for the bike, and from what I see I need the green wire. The owner's manual that came with the bike is next-to-useless. Tells me how to change a headlamp bulb, but that's about all. Hope y'all have a great 2015. Riding weather down-under is perfect. Warm days and 14 hours of daylight - gotta love that!

This thread title caught my eye, given how old it is. So, I thought I'd let you know what we pay for milk down-under. We don't buy milk by the gallon. Our main sizes are two litres and three litres plastic bottles. Thanks to an on-going supermarket war between the main players, we pay $1 per litre. The main players are Coles and Woolworths, but they are being savaged by Aldi that is making big inroads and creating what is known as 'The Aldi Effect' - pushing ALL grocery prices down. Gotta love competition!

Four years on and I'm reviving this thread mainly because not much has changed. Daughter is visiting again with her hubby but this time also with a 16 months' old grandson. Christmas Day here already - midday - and the pork roast is on, cooking in a convection cooker in my workshop right next to the RSV. So once again folks , merry Christmas from down under. Much love to all from Spear, Mrs Spear and all the little barbs and arrows.

Not that it would mean much to you State-side - Autobarn. Nearly every auto or electronics place has them and getting cheaper every day.

I have a little, el-cheaplo go-pro knock off ($49) that I have mounted to a 1/4" bolt I have clamped to my bars. Sits right next to the front brake master cylinder. Only 720p resolution but a mighty result for what it does. I power it straight off the 12v power outlet with the mini-USB lead. I have as 32GB mini-SD card in it. It's in no way a Go-Pro but it works well. Vibration is not a problem. Switches itself on with the ignition, and off again when I power off. It captures the very edge if the windscreen at left of shot which is good as it gives 'depth' to the footage. These things are getting cheaper every day, and soon a 1080HD will be the norm for about $100. Go for it.

Hey 'puc. The £ symbol is a standard on my iPad, like $ € and ¥. I think I formatted it to the English (British) system so my spelling would be correct. i.e. Colour, not color etc. :-)

And now, for today's weather report..... and when it says "Feels like 48.2" they're not wrong. Thats just shy of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sorry 'puc. A quid is a pound, as in the currency. £. Fairly common expression down under. Most common one is "wouldn't be dead for quids" which means you're enjoying life too much to die and no amount of money will make you change your mind. Australia was under the influence of Mother England for too damned long, and up until 14 February 1966 we had pounds, shillings and pence. Very quickly and efficiently went to dollars and cents, whereby £1 = $2. Or to put it colloquially, a quid bought you two dollars. And FWIW we no longer have copper coins. Got rid of 1c and 2c coins. Smallest we have is the 5c. No 'quarters'. Coins are 5, 10, 20, 50 cents as well as $1 and $2. Notes are $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. $1 and $2 notes were phased out when the $1 and $2 coins were introduced. It was interesting in the early days when we had the coppers, no $1 or $2 coins and no $100 note - if you had one of each coin and note you had $88:88c. Would that make you a lucky Chinaman? Australia is the world leader in bank note production, and 'exports' its technology to other countries that want to combat forgery and counterfeits. Sorry for the drawn out response, but you ask me a question and I don't half answer it. :-)

Hey you folks State-side. It's just after 6pm Saturday night down under, and I'm watching the news on the idiot box. I can't believe how cold it is in some parts of the good ol' USofA. Thinking of those who are shivering, whilst I put up with 100+ degF day in and day out. But for what it's worth, I wouldn't swap you for quids. Stay safe my friends.

What? Just found out you're colour blind? (think about it!)

Ya had me worried for a while boss. Tried logging in yesterday and today via my usual iPad link and kept getting an error message. This morning did a brand new Goooooogle search and there we are. Had to do a fresh log in. All good. Nice work.

Crikey bloke! You wanna run that by us in English? (Sounds rude to me!) -
Probably an unad-Venture-ous type of person.

Hey guys and gals. Am still fine-tuning the Wiki web page for our mighty machine, and have managed to slip in a reference and link to our web site. Is that okay with you Boss? If not just say so, and I'll delete that reference.

I second that! -
Yo Bubber! I let that one slide buddy. And FWIW, I'm (we're) back. We had a fantastic four days away. Never stopped When we arrived at our hotel there was an express parcel waiting for us at reception. Our three kids had sent us a box of chocolates for the theatre and a fresh and crisp $100 bill to spend on our anniversary dinner - which we duly did. Another year down and lots to go. Gotta love life!
