  1. If you can get over to Fond du Lac with parts next weekend (6/22-23) we can tackle the clutch. I've done several. Most likely just a weak spring. We can mic the clutch parts to make sure. Streets and Trips says it is 2 hours each way. I've put a Barnett kit on mine and couldn't be happier. I did a write up on here somewhere. Let me know. RR
  2. BTW, I have (somewhere) an original owners manual for a '82 GS750T. Not sure if it is only for the 'T' version or universal. You are welcome to it if you want it. Just send me a name and address and I will drop it in the mail. RR
  3. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/index.php Everything you want to know about the old Suzy GS's RR
  4. Keep an eye on it. You won't get much life. However, glad you are back on the road with a safe tire. That Avon was scary. RR
  5. Which Dunlop are your putting on? E3 / E4 is good. The D404 is too light a tire for the Venture and will only give 4-5000 miles (if you behave). RR
  6. Make sure your bolts are straight and the bearings are well lubed (and in good shape) before reassembly. When I R&R's mine the bolts were bent and bearings were shot. It would suck to do it twice. BTW - This is a good time to add leveling links to help with low speed handling (assuming you are not vertically challenged and the additional height would be a problem). FYI - I had about 140k on the bike at the time. RR
  7. My son was in from Arizona (GoldenRider) and we sorted out most of the problems on the bike. We got the brakes sorted out and the tip-over bars straightened. Why do I use a 5 lb hammer? Because I don't have a 10 lb hammer. This bike was supposed to be an upgrade for my son as he is a bit irritated with the extensive maintenance required to keep his '83 Venture in good running order. Well, we took the bike out for a run and it worked great. However, with both of us being about 6'4", we found the '97 RSTD considerably too small. Therefore, I will finish all the repairs and sell it (hopefully recovering what was paid). The item I am having a bear of a time finding is the hollow bolt that connects the auxiliary driving light to the turn signal. Any ideas of where to source one? RR
  8. Pics will be forthcoming. Picked up a '97 RSTD that needs some work. PO laid it down in a round-a-bout but the crashbars did their jobs. Very minor damage. However, the rear brake doesn't work and the front brakes are squishy. No big deal, I can handle that stuff. However, in looking for parts, I am running into obstacles. Specifically, replacement SS brake lines. The lines on the bike appear to be original and are in need of replacement. No use in replacing with anything other than SS braided lines. Are the '97 RSTD lines the same as on the Gen2 Ventures? Is there somewhere other than the usual places (Spiegel) to get SS lines for this? Other questions will be asked as I tear into this project. Thanks for your help. RR
  9. Been with St Farm for about 35 years while living in several states. Always had premium service from the local agent (even though I rarely have had a claim of any kind). I will pay extra for personal service. However, their rates have been competitive (not cheapest, but competitive). Don't plan on changing. RR
  10. Did the gal that hit you have insurance? RR
  11. There is a guy on ADVRider that is selling a RSTD RDL seat set with backrest. Pretty good buy for the most comfortable seat evah. From a 2005. I have no relationship or affiliation. https://advrider.com/f/threads/yamaha-royal-star-tour-deluxe-2005-up-russell-day-long-seat-clearview-windshield-nh.1347920/
  12. It may be in the ignition switch. One of the weak points of the Venture/RSTD. You should put the light bar lights through a relay. Do a search on here for ignition switch repair/replacement. Kind of a PITA on the Venture. Assume it would be the same on a RSTD. RR
  13. Flyinfool is right. The minute you drive it off the lot, it is essentially a 10 yo used bike. Looking up KBB: $5700 retail. Trade in $3585. Offer them $5000 with new tires and an extra warranty thrown in or $4000 as it sits. If they say no, tell them you will be back next year (after they paid taxes on it again) with an offer of $4500/3500. Talk with the General Manager not a sales guy. The sales guy won't make any money on the sale. The GM just wants it off their floor. RR
  14. This is not uncommon. In other instances I've seen (Rocky Mountain ATV) it has to do with their agreement with a Canadian distributor. RR
  15. That's a GoPro mount. I have one on a helmet. RR
  16. Have you, perhaps, removed the cassette deck on your bike? If so, did you just cut the cable off? I helped another VR member several years ago that did this and a ground was making contact and causing the bike to start when the key was turned on. RR
  17. Dave, Open the back of the fuel pump yourself. Remove the right side panel under the seat and it will be staring you in the face. Black cover with a screw holding it on. Remove this black cover and look closely at the points at the back of the pump. If the pump is failing, this is what is usually the problem. If there is pitting/burned areas on the contacts, you can replace them for about $30ish. Search VR for the source. There are also pictures on here of what the contacts should look like and how to get to them. Look at this thread: https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?87556-fuel-pump&highlight=fuel%20pump RR
  18. Congratulations on your promotions. Being under a microscope (or at least having greater visibility) is always nerve-wracking, but it is the price of being higher in an organization. Heard an interesting phrase the other day - The higher up the pole a monkey climbs, the more visible his ass. Yes, you will occasionally fail. So does your boss and his boss. Just be truthful as to what happened, don't cover anything up, and don't ever blame an underling (nor take their credit when deserved). What type of work? RR
  19. With the extra $$ you could pick up a nice BMW. RR
  20. Is there a spec on how much fuel is supposed to be in the bowl? This seems simple but I am missing how this actually measures the float height. RR
  21. Interesting setup, but what am I looking at? Feeding fuel under pressure with the fire extinguisher (very cool modification) does what over having a hanging fuel bottle? Once you see the float level needs adjusted, do you need to open up the bowl, make the adjustment, then replace the bowl? Fill in some details please. Thanks, RR
  22. Africa Twin for the Win??? http://www.partireper.it/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/gionata-nencini-partireper-honda-transalp-anteprima-esclusiva-nuova-honda-africa-twin-crf1000l-adventure-equipaggiata-per-viaggio2.jpg
  23. Pinwall would probably be your best bet for a replacement.RR
  24. This is very curious. There is no way the bolt couldn't have been there at some time. Torquing that bolt on is what forces the flywheel up onto the tapered shaft. The flats on the flywheel center allow you to hold the flywheel/crank when you tighten the center bolt. That bolt gets tightened to about 140 ftlbs (just pulled this off the top of my head, don't hold me to the number). If that bolt backed out, there's no place for it to go without destroying the stator. Very odd. There also appears to be some light corrosion on the flywheel and on the housing. I see here this could have occurred since you've had the engine open for a while. This is a wet area and everything should be very clean. Really looking forward to hearing what the dealer says about this. RR
