  1. Now that is what I need, I thought Markspipes or something like that carried something that would replace our collectors:confused24: Skydoc you care to chime in and set me straight?
  2. Ok bear with me; what the H E double hockey sticks is "pigmy infestation" On the note about Ebay; I have had several accounts on Ebay stretching all the way back to 1998 and I know the site well.
  3. Thanks Condor, These give me a good place to start. Good to know the tubing is 1" cause my measurements (however suspect they may be) showed 7/8" on the engine guards. The Kuryakyn stuff makes me drool but the price of their stuff brings me back to reality Now the Rivca stuff is quite reasonable and gave me additional ideas of things I can do with my scoot. Just need to convince Mrs. Warhammer I "need" this stuff.
  4. Ok folks I have a laundry list of things I want to do to my 89 VR but can't seem to find a consolidated list of vendors so I figured I would come here and seek out the experts. Here is an abreviated list of what I want to do: 1. Convert oil filter from cartridge to spin-on so I need a good source for the oil filter adapter. 2. Install highway pegs so I can get a breeze up the old pant legs; with the VR having a 7/8" tube I am struggling to find something that works. 3. Delete the stock exhaust collector so I can run a wide range of mufflers.
  5. Ah come on Earl it is just a little red Corvette what harm could possibly come of it? Besides the HP to Weight ratio would have been in your favor right up to about 125 mph and then it is a matter of displacement (6600cc vs 1800cc) and aerodynamics. One of these days we will have to find a roadrace track and prove/disprove this theory. 1/4 mile is too short I like to stretch the legs of the vette.
  6. How does one acquire the badges associated with your forum name when you post? If that makes sense to anyone; I will be amazed but I can't think of any other way to explain it.
  7. Well here is a continuation of bringing my scoot up to my standards of performance. This weekend Skydoc and me performed the following: 1. Carb diaphragm replacement (21 years and 30K miles) 2. Needle Valve Shim (Interested to see how much this can help) 3. Carb sync 3. Clutch diaphragm spring upgrade (because I was getting some slippage) I can honestly say I was shocked how much the carb tune-up helped. No vibrations at idle and silky smooth cruising down the highway. Overall throttle response is much better (probaly because the carb were so far out of sync). I suspect my fuel mileage will increase too and I am anxious to see the results from a month of driving. I will report back. The clutch spring upgrade will have to wait for an honest assessment as I need to get my seat to Rick for modification and it is raining and will do so most of the week. I want to personally thank Skydoc for cruising down and helping me get a handle on some of my gremlins and for teaching me a thing or two about the black art of carbs. This forum is blessed with so many great folks and I am honored to be a part of it.
  8. Good choice, although to be fair I believe the healthy doses of Seafoam helped clean out any crud that was offending the carbs. Now I need to get a new air filter and I will be golden for the winter months ahead:big-grin-emoticon:.
  9. Using 90 RWHP for bike and calculating with my fat butt driving both. The Vette is pushing 470 RWHP so it really isn't a fair comparison as the Vette is set up for roadracing and the bike is stock.
  10. Actually my bike has the sniffles but runs like scalded cat; almost scary how fast I can gain on people. It really feels like I am in my 550 HP Vette acceleration wise maybe faster. Now according to my short math calculation the bike is pushing about 9.5 lbs per HP, whereas the Vette is pushing 7.3 lbs per HP.
  11. Everything works as it should with the stands, ie... runs and cranks in Neutral on side and center stand, but somethimes will not turn over when I have it in gear with the clutch engaged and both stands up. If I put the side stand down while in gear then it shuts off. Liike I said above I suspect it is in the clutch switch as all the other switches are operating fine.
  12. Awesome; thanks for the quick response. I will dig into this when I get back from vacation. I am thinking it is in the clutch switch somewhere as all the other items function as intended just doesn't want to start in gear with the clutch engaged. Probably better to start it on the center stand in Neutral anyway.
  13. Ok gurus of the 1st Gen VR I need some advice. Recently I am having issues getting the bike to start when the clutch is engaged. Engine does not turn over. Acts like I am trying to start in gear w/o the kick stand or center stand up. If I put it in Neutral it will start sometimes. If the bike is on the center stand in Neutral it starts almost all the time. I am assuming there is a safety interlock somewhere that is out of adjustment but not sure where to start on this one.
  14. Over time, yes plug wires do "wear out" (resistance increases, rubber drys out and cracks) although an easier fix is to often snip off a quarter inch from the end opposite the plug. However, not knowing the history of the bike and the fact the wires were 21 years old I felt it was time and I suspected an ignition issue was causing the stumble (hey even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then ) so I went with the simplest items first.
  15. Cool thanks Earl and Yammer Dan. The picture soldified in my pea brain where to find it. Earl, BTW, the springs are working great. I used the PVC spacer provided; just trimmed the OD so it would fit inside the top cap (one with the o-ring) and pressed in the washer that sits on the spring. Gave me just a touch over an inch and is perfect with the 10 wt oil. Definately glad I did this first. Now I need to save the pennies for the caliper upgrade and delink kit.
  16. I stand corrected; yes i have the removable turn-downs with the rubber gaskets and attachment springs. It was the end of the muffler I cut off not the turn-downs. Ok I will try to find the idle adjustment screw. Although I think a re-sync of the carbs is in order and hopefully Skydoc can help me out on that one. I hear he is the man in the know about such things
  17. Well, I got the bug to work on my VR this past weekend. The PO had let some things go and I thought it was time to correct them (and the wife was out of town at her sister's ) Issues: Front tire worn out Front Springs sagging and bottoming out unless I had max air pressure in the shocks Noticeable stumble when accelerating past 3500 rpm Headlight a little dim Too quiet (ok not an issue but something I wanted to change) Original fuse box with glass fuses (scary) First on the list was a new front tire and while I was there I replaced the springs with a progressive set from Skydoc. I also changed out the fork oil. Is this stuff supposed to be dark gray/black? The new Yamaha 10 wt fork oil was clear. Man! what a difference 1 hour worth of work can make, no more bottoming out and the bike tracks much truer through curves; no more pogo stick effect....wooottt. Now the stumble had me concerned so I went out and bought some Sea Foam and promptly added a healthy dose to the system. I also decided to replace the plug wires and plugs. Not as easy as replacing plugs on the wife's Jeep Commander but not as hard as the Vette so it took me about 30 minutes to complete. Well all I can say is the stumble is gone and the bike definately idles smoother (albeit a little low ~400 rpm). I think I need to service the carbs but I am going to wait on an area expert (Skydoc) before I dive into that tangle of tubes and such. Fixed the headlight by replacing the bulb with a Silverstar Xtra 9003 H4. I am amazed at the improvement made. Much better pattern and brighter white light even the low beam setting is much better. The mufflers were modified by cutting off the turn-downs and cutting out the end baffle. I left the inner baffle and I have to say I really enjoy the sound; not at all obnoxious but mellow and very authoriative. Very similiar to the low end growl of a Ducati (at least to me) but smoother. I may have the turn-downs welded back into place but right now I am enjoying it. Now the fuse box is still a work in progress but suffice it to say the glass fuses are history and in their place is are ATC fuses that light up when blown (pretty handy if trying to track down a blown fuse at night). I still need to fab up a holder but at least all the circuits are protected. All in all, a weekend well spent and the bike rides like a new machine. Heck it only has 29K miles on it and I hope to take it 100k more.
  18. Very good points but it also good to have a bike that is running in the safe zone. I know first hand what a lean mixture can do to an engine and I do not want that to happen to my VR. I did notice the bike seemed to struggle much above 85 mph today. Might be because it was flippin 97 degrees here in VA. Thanks for the advice. Now where did I put that socket wrench? I am off to get a plug reading.
  19. Ok folks this is my first "official post" and I am new to the VR so I hope my question isn't too far in left field. Keep in mind I am a child of the fuel injection generation so carbs are a balck art to me. I can tune the pants of a fuel injected vehicle, case in point my 500 HP Vette, but carbs befuddle me. So my question: Recently I put some holes ( about 8 x 3/8 inch) in the stock air box and noticed a little improvement. Last weekend I decided I needed a little more agressive sound so I cut-off the end of the muffler and removed the end baffle. The inner baffle is still intact and I love the new sound. So is it possible with some loss of restriction on the airbox and muffler side that I need to put bigger jets in the carbs? The bike is purring like a kitten when cruising down the road, no pops or back fires and much better acceleration but I also want it to last and really don't want to melt down valves or pistons due to an over lean condition. My first Touring bike and I love it. Thanks
