My hands cramp up too. Thanks GAWildKat for the thought but I think I will buy a new set that fits the Goldwing that has good reviews. Many of the new ones help with vibration and should do the trick. Thanks Prairiehammer

So if I buy any Goldwing 1500 or 1800 grip it will fit? That will open up my options. The ones I have now are some old foam ones that have gotten smooth. I have to grip them pretty tight and my hands cramp up. I think I am going to try the Kuryakyn ISO grips 6180. Says they fit the Goldwing. Anybody have a brand or style that worked for them on there 1st Gen? Thanks Doug

Need new grips. I've been getting different results as far as fitment for my 84 venture. I bought some that said they were an exact fit. They were not. I have foam one's now that have worn out and would like the rubber checkered ones. Any advice on what you have bought for new grips would be helpful. Thanks Doug

Impressions after 100 miles
Dbeck replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I set my cruise the green light gets brighter. I let off the gas a little, maybe 4 mph and then it works. For a long time I thought my cruise wasn't working because it didn't engage at the speed i set it at. Just something else to try. -
I had something like this happen to me. Replaced starter cables and forgot to put the rubber caps on the connection at the starter relay switch, it was hitting metal and kept the starter engaged. Acted just like what happened to your 84.

I just bought two Mag-9 Sena helmets for my bride and me. We really like them. This helmet has recessed foam where your glasses go so it is very comfortable wearing glasses. We bought the sena 10 Bluetooth set that is supposed to fit into the Bluetooth recess on the helmet. They don't tell you that the Bell exclusive boom mic is needed to fit the helmet. Well we bought those and now that we are set up, it works well. The sun shield works better than I thought it would. All and all we like them.

Put an E3 on the front last spring. Improved cornering and handling alot compared to the 202 that I replaced. I'm sure you'll like them!

Recent Update on Big Bird

The people on this site are the best! Just got back from raybear71's. 1st I pull up in his driveway and my bike dies. Won't idle at all. He starts lookin around and found one of my mix screws was way to far out. Now it idles better than it has in a long time. It even idles without the choke on!! Wasn't sure that was possible... Hooked up his tci and went for a ride. That was it! 2 yrs of searching is over. I cannot thank you enough Ray. It was great to meet you and chat about our bikes and other things. Hope to get out for a ride with you sometime. Now... about that 3rd tci group buy. If I contact them directly which one is for my bike? They have so many on there site not sure which one.

He did test the pickup coils and they tested fine. He went through the progression of troubleshooting and ended at the tci. Are there any other electrical symptoms that would point to the pickup coils. Bad idle, green radio power light on when the radio is turned off, static coming through the speakers with radio turned off? Bike also stopped starting in 1st gear with clutch engaged. I have to start in neutral, thats a new one. Just throwing out anything I can think of. I have cleaned and put delectrical grease on all the connections. Would be nice if someone up here had a tci available to see if that is the problem. I will gladly buy an aftermarket tci if that is the problem but I got to know.

Here's an update. cylinder pressure test came out fine. thought maybe the boost sensor might be the problem, nope. Local guy went through the carb that I thought was giving me trouble he said it looked fine. He also synced the carbs. still running bad. It's a timing problem he thinks and that is probably the tci. Wondering if there is anybody close to me here in east central MN who might have there tci out where we can get to it so I can try it and see if that is the problem. I have pretty much gone through everything else. Kinda at the end of my rope with this thing. Thanks Doug

I have tools, might have to borrow or buy certain things. More time than money. Plenty of room, just a little worried about my knowledge. Forgot to mention he checked the valves and they were adjusted correctly. Moved carbs around and the same cylinder was the culprit.

I have recently put a lot of money into this bike; new needles and seats, diaphrams from sirius, progressive springs, had the tci resoldered and new diodes put in and had my seat redone by Rick ( which turned out great by the way). Was still running crappy. Rechecked the compression that I thought was good. Not so good. 3 cylinders were in the 120's and the back right was 100. Long story longer there is some blackening in that cyclinder and my mechanic thinks its either a bad ring or bad spring on the valves. 11 hour job. Now I either rebiuld or get a decent used motor with good compression. Or sell for what I can with the new owner knowing what he is in for. With all the info that has been compiled on this site I am considering trying to fix this thing myself if the cost is reasonable, even though I have never pulled a motor before. Also wondering what the cost would be to do this, rebuild or used motor. Any imput would help my decision. Thanks Doug

Yesterday, at one point the radio did cut out when leaned over on the right side. This thing is so intermittent, now it won't cut out until I'm riding it. I'm just so frustrated with this thing right now. Just got back from a ride, cuts out almost constantly. So I shut the radio off and enjoyed the ride. I thought the same thing, that maybe its in the radio or amp itself.. could be. But.. it worked fine before I had the whole front end off to get the coils out. I must have done something. I'll see what my guy says this week when he splits 1 of my carbs for me. I'm about done with it. Doug
-
Yes the radio display goes out. And I have lost my presets several times. It's a power problem somewhere, although with the tank cover off and wiggling all the wires and connections I can't find any bad connections. Maybe the amp is going? really hard to say. Just put everything back together and now it just cuts out when I ride it. Seems to get worse as it warms up. Can't get it to cut out while sitting on it. Although as I have found out, this could change. And to tx2sturgis, maybe this is a safety feature on the 1st gens so we don't get distracted by the radio while driving.
-
I think I'm done for now trying to figure this out. The weather is to nice to have this thing all tore apart just to have a radio. I have a mechanic next week who is going to split a carb for me that is just not working right. While he has it I'll ask him to take a look at it. Maybe a new set of eyes and his experience will find the problem. I'll let you know what it was if I find out. Thanks for all the advice. Doug

Got it up on the center stand, no matter what I do I cannot get the radio to cut out. It must ground the bike somehow. When just the sidestand is down if I move the stearing wheel or bounce the bike the radio cuts out. The sidestand moves along the ground when you do this so It must ground the bike somehow. The radio ground is in place and tight, it was clean. I guess i'll take the lower front plastic off and check the ground again, but moving all those wires I can't get the radio to cut out. My next thought is to have someone sit on the bike without the sidestand or center stand down while I have the radio out of the fairing but in its connections and try moving things around. The last time I did this it was on the sidestand. Maybe thats why I couldn't get a cut out. I hate those electrical gremlins! Had my Son sit on the bike, I moved all the wires and stuff in the radio compartment, the flasher plugin and signal on right side. All the wires coming from handle bars. no reaction. If I hit the amp on top I get a cut out. Got to be something there. I'll get back to you. .
-
Ok, think I narrowed it down. When I sit on bike and radio is on, it usually works if I don't move the bike around, and I kick sideways on the left foot rest, everytime it will cut out then go right back on. If the bike is on the sidestand and I do this, radio does not cut out. No affect if I kick the right side foot rest. Its got to be the sidestand cutoff. Thats the only thing close to it that has wires. Do I have to remove the crome cover with the allen bolts in it to get to the cutoff? I need to wait for a buddy to come over and help me get it up on the center stand( my 135 pound body just doesn't quite have enough uumph to do it by myself), then I can mess around with the cutoff and see whats up. I'm ready any minute for someone to come around the corner of the garage and say "Smile, your on candid camera"

If i put bike in gear while the sidestand is down the bike dies. I can take weight of sidestand with bike running in neutral and it stays running, as it should. There is no slop in sidestand. I just put the new battery cables on maybe two weeks ago so I'm sure they are clean. But when I get home from work tomorrow I will take the engine ground off and clean it anyway just to cross that off the list. I checked the radio ground yesterday and that looked good. The readouts on the radio go out when this happens not just the sound. So somehow losing power to unit. I have also moved the fuse panel around and all the connections in that area. Does not affect radio. It's crazy, all I have to do is move some of the weight of the sidestand with my hip standing next to the bike and radio cuts out. Can the sidestand have anything to do with ground? Thanks for the ideas. I'll let you know what I find tomorrow. Doug
-
Ok, I took the panel that the radio plugs into off. Then plugged the radio assembly back in. Turned radio on and moved all the wires and connecters, checked the ground wire, that was fine. Radio did not cut out once. While radio was on took weight off the sidestand and it cut out. Very odd. I recently had the whole fairing off so I could take the coils out and have them tested under load. They were fine. Is there something I could have done in there that would have this affect. Wondering about the sidestand cutoff thing, but I don't have to put the sidestand up just take weight off it for the radio to cut out. Checked the main ground and that is fine( I recently upgraded the battery cables). I really don't know where to go from here. Any ideas would be welcome, Thanks Doug
-
Here's an odd one. Bike is on the side stand. Turn the radio on, works fine. When I take the weight off the kickstand, while leaving it down, the radio cuts out. Put the bike back on the kickstand, radio works fine. I have put washers under the blue connecters thinking maybe that was it but that did not help. If I try the radio while riding it cuts in and out.

I have an 84 VR that is doing the same exact thing. Cruises fine until I hit the throttle, between 3k and 4k rpms. Accelerates fine until I hit 3300 rpms through 4k rpm's then smooths out. I bet it's the coils! I have already have doon these things: Have run sea foam in it several times, disconnected the yics, Carbs cleaned and synced, new plugs and wires, TCI has been resoldered along with new diodes, diaphrams are good and slides are moving in sync, have cleaned connections and added dielectrical grease to tci, and other connections from stator and pickup coil. When I had it all tore apart I did not check connection at coil. Whoops. I just bought an ohm meter but do not know how to use it really; bet I can test the coils and see if they are bad with this new gadget with a little advice. Bike has been running like this since I bought it last year, just couldn't figured it out. It would be great if this was it (though they look involved to get out).I still get 40 mpg. Thanks, Doug

Sputtering 3500-4000 rpms.
Dbeck replied to Dbeck's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
He used liquid stuff to fix small holes in the diaphrams. Said he's had good results with it. Can you tell what the problem is by the symptoms or do you fix the cheapest thing first and see if that does it. -
Bike has 35,000 on it. Bike sputters from 3500-4000 rpm's but then seems to smooth out after that. 70mph that I drive on my commute is right in this range. Carbs have been soaked, synced, and the diaphrams patched by my mechanic. He mentioned that it might need the needles replaced(He said it is not a fun or inexpensive job), or maybe new diaphrams. Other than that bike runs great and gets 40-45 mpg. Before I proceed I thought I would ask you guys. Thanks Doug
