I'll 2nd this... I watched ebay for probably 3 years before I found a set of lightly-used Ovals that I felt were reasonable ($300 shipped). Absolutely loved the sound, but only took 15 minutes on the 1st ride for the wife and I to discover the harmonic issue. Ordered up the baffles from smartpartz which took care of the harmonic issue without changing the sound. Absolutely love them now. No going back for us...

RSTD Lighting (again)
TDbiker replied to Kretz's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I recently purchased a similar set off ebay, and finally got around to installing them this past weekend. Sorry, no pictures (before or after), however I have to say I'm disappointed in the headlamp. By itself (passing lights turned off), it wasn't nearly as bright as the PIAA 6k bulb I had in it before. The passing lights did seem to do a pretty good job as what they're intended for. So ultimately, I removed the LED's and returned to stock. -
For what it's worth... I stopped by my local dealer today and while talking to a sales rep I asked about any upcoming announcement by Yamaha. He said there are regional dealer meetings scheduled for June 12th (I believe he said the 12th, but that week anyway). Word is that there is an announcement planned after the meetings. He said the dealers are having to commit to certain advertising requirements specified by Yamaha if they want to be able to participate in whatever it is that Yamaha will be announcing. Lots of speculation and not much detail I know, however we may now know when to expect something... or nothing...

Rear Tour pack for RSTD?
TDbiker replied to Kretz's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
All the research I performed before adding a trunk to my 2005 RSTD indicated that the Harley mounting points are quite different than ours. IMHO, if you want a trunk that is removable so you can interchange it with the backrest for example, you should find another backrest (assuming you don't want to hack up the one you have) and have it chopped and fabricated into a trunk mount. I almost went this route but decided that in all reality, once I got the trunk on I wouldn't ever see a need to swap between it and a backrest. 5 years later and this is still the case. I found a Venture trunk mount and fender (mounting) rails and a HD trunk and have never looked back. -
Yes, it does.

Yes, this is the part number I purchased and currently have on my 2005 Tour Deluxe.

It sounds like you are experiencing exactly what my wife and I did when I first mounted them. I can certainly understand you not wanting to ride with them this loud, and can't blame your wife either. After our first test ride I contacted V&H directly to see if anything was available from them to address this. They said they have no quite baffle options available for these, and from the factory they are wrapped/packed as tightly as possible. I then contacted the PO to see if he'd modified them, which he said he hadn't. Hence my decision to try the quiet baffle add-on's from SmartPartz. I think these would be your answer, but I can also understand you not wanting to sink any more $$$$ into this endeavor. I felt fortunate that I got my MO's for $340 USD including shipping. If it helps with your decision any, I believe SmartPartz offers a 30-day money back guarantee if not satisfied. So you could at least try them, and get your money back if you find it doesn't help. If you do decide to unload them, if you have mounting brackets available I may be interested in them. Good luck with your decision.

Long story short, I found an old post somewhere here where a previous member had located some quiet baffles to add to the mufflers. They're not advertised to work with the MO's but they do. The vendor website is http://www.smartpartz.com, and the part number is SPZHK250ST. Here's a link: http://smartpartz.mybigcommerce.com/spzhk250st/. They run $69/pair + shipping. They slip right into the end of the muffler and lock in with a single set screw. No drilling required. Vendor recommends running a bead of hi-temp RTV gasket silicone, but I didn't do that. Here's a link to the OP thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?38259-V-amp-H-Monster-Ovals&highlight=Monster+Ovals

I agree -- best sounding mufflers, but I had to quiet them down just a tad as they got to be a bit much for us on longer rides. Now, for us, they are perfect!
-
The inlets on my ovals were too small; about .020" as I recall. Took them to a local mechanic who had an expander and took care of that. As for the mounting holes, well that was another story. I had found 3 different mounting brackets that had been fabricated for RK pipes and none had the right dimensions. So, for the time being, I'm using P clamps. They work fine but I suspect the weight they are supporting (yeah, these things are heavy) will eventually take their toll, so will eventually have to make something better.

I don't remember the part number but I did have a similar issue several years ago. I bought the chrome oil cap off the shelf at my local dealer, got it home and it wouldn't screw in. I returned to the dealer, they verified the part number was correct, so they ordered another one of the same part number and that one fit just fine. Go figure...

Flanders vs. RSTD handlebars
TDbiker replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Freebird, I can't offer any answers to your questions, but if you decide to try the RSTD bars I have a set I'm willing to give up. -
I also just scored a nice set of Monster Ovals. Price was reasonable IMHO, low miles on them and the only imperfection is a little rash on the bottom of the right tip (not seen when installed). So, I installed them on Saturday and took a 100 miles ride on Sunday. The verdict?? Well, both my wife and I love the looks and the deep note they produce, but agree they are probably too loud for our liking. I see that V&H makes 'quiet baffle' options for some of their slip-on's but a quick phone call to them confirmed no such option exists for these. So before giving up on them, I did some searching and found a thread here from a previous member who discovered an after-market baffle add-on that reduces the db level without affecting the deep sound. So I'll give that a shot. Before... http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv200/gnesvik/IMG_0085.jpg and after... http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv200/gnesvik/IMG_0089.jpg

Do you have any pictures of what you've blacked out. Sounds intriguing...

I didn't see your Wagner Grille Guard mentioned. I'd hate for your list to be incomplete...

Another option is Wide Open Customs. I have no personal experience with any fairings, but this is another option I've come across in the past. http://www.wideopencustom.com/p-108-yamaha-royal-star-deluxe-fairing.aspx If you proceed with any fairing option, please be sure to post pictures of the final product!! Good luck.

I believe I still have my bar end weights that I'm not using. I replaced my bars with Flanders about 3 years ago (best thing ever) and I know I'll never change them back to stock, so I don't need them. At the same time I opted for the Kuryakyn ISO grips so I couldn't use the stock weights without modification anyway. I'll have to check when I get home from work, and if I still have them they're yours for the cost of shipping.

Minneapolis Motorcyclist hits pothole is thrown to his death
TDbiker replied to bill in mn's topic in Watering Hole
I'm guessing you've never lived in this part of the country, where we have some of the harshest winter weather conditions that takes its toll on the roads. This time of year when it starts to warm up, snow starts melting and frost starts trying to leave the ground, potholes can appear quickly. Ideally, there would be enough resources to patrol the roads and make instant repairs on a 24x7 basis, but that's unrealistic. Besides, this time of year all they have to work with is 'cold patch' which (on a busy highway) usually doesn't last the day. -

Minneapolis Motorcyclist hits pothole is thrown to his death
TDbiker replied to bill in mn's topic in Watering Hole
Latest report from the Minneapolis Star Tribune is that he was traveling 100 mph. After dark, and during pothole season. Not a good combination. -
Risers are difficult if not impossible to install on these RSTD's because of the speedometer unit. Most end up swapping the handle bars for ones made by Flanders. I don't recall the part number but a search here will find it. Good luck.

Newbie looking for trunk mount...
TDbiker replied to txlen's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I also have a 2005 RSTD and have done precisely what you want to do. IMHO, the easiest (not necessarily the cheapest) is to purchase a 2nd Gen Venture trunk mount and the Venture fender rails. This is a direct bolt-on option. However, if you want to be able to easily switch between a trunk and the stock passenger backrest, this is not the way to go. Others have fabricated a removable trunk mount that will accomplish this. I went with a HD trunk, and am very happy with the results. Not cheap, however... Another option is a generic trunk you can find on ebay for around $100 and a Wompus rack trunk mount for about $250. I initially went this route to see if I liked having a trunk. Good luck, Glenn -
