  1. There are people that have gone to the Firestick. I don't have experience with them.
  2. I used oven cleaner and it worked great ! Put some on...let it sit for a minute then wiped it off and the pin striping came off too
  3. Joined June 30 2019 and my number is 7842 Ben - did you figure out where your number is?
  4. I know why it would be de-tuned....but can you imagine a straight drop in to the new Venture?
  5. "With ever-tightening emissions regulations, the era of air-cooled engines is drawing to a close. Euro 5 standards, which go into effect on January 1, 2020, further reduce limits for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, and adapting air-cooled engines to meet these standards will become increasingly difficult." Maybe Yamaha will go back to liquid cooled v4 ? :-)
  6. Between 1999 and 2013 the main thing that changed on the Venture was the colour annually. Seat changed in 2004 along with tank badges...don't know how often the clutch basket changed but pretty much any with a whine were 2008 and earlier. Everything is interchangeable. The RSTD and Venture shared the motor...probably some other parts as well but I haven't compared the two side-by-side.
  7. Good luck and welcome to the forum ! Hopefully there is someone on the forum near you that can provide on-site assistance or guidance. Including you there are 8 members in LA. Not sure if you can do a member search but hopefully one of them will see your post. Did the previous owner do any modifications to the bike? Passing lights? Remove cassette? Additional wiring? If it is stock it will be easier to diagnose. And the $12 membership will pay off very quickly ! May already have paid off with the owners/service manual and being able to search posts !
  8. A Venture/RSTD with a "bad motor"? You really need to explain this comment.
  9. What year bike did the motor come out of? I believe pre-2009 the basket was different. There is a stamp on the basket. From memory....and someone can correct....think you want an "I" basket...or did you use the one from the 2009 motor? Some have said different oil lessens the "whine". What oil are you using? I use Rotella T6 in my '09 Venture...no noticeable whine.
  10. You are in Louisiana ? Consider that the bike has sat for a long time and temperature/humidity could affect electronics. Do you have the owners manual? Service manual? If not you can download them from the "read only" section under the 2nd Gen tech library. Owners manual will show you where the fuse boxes are. As for dielectric grease... my understanding is you do not put them on the wires themselves as this will reduce or block contact. The cruise control isn't electronic - it runs off air pressure/vacuum. Do a search for "cruise control" (top right of page) and you'll find several links to threads. Check tech library too. For radio...inside the cowl are the contacts.... unplug, clean, reconnect. You'll see them as large plugs. If cassette was removed it would be the way it was re-wired. For trip meters....again, try a search in the forums. Hope this helps....
  11. I check in to the site a few times a day, post responses to things I can answer. Turned 60 in July, riding the '09 Venture. Haven't done any long trips lately but the Venture is my daily ride. Glad you started this thread, chance to see what some of the quiet members have been up to.
  12. You use a motorcycle/ATV jack. Has two arms/legs (skids) but if you get one look for one that is fairly wide and the arms fairly long. Some motorcycle jacks barely fit under the bike. I bought an OTC 1545 lift which has 17" skids. Keep in mind that the lift needs to have a 1,000 lb plus capacity. https://www.amazon.ca/OTC-1545-Stinger-Motorcyle-Lift/dp/B000OCHCIW?tag=vglnk-ca-c976-20 The one that Carbon One made has a bracket that you use with a rod to fasten the lift to where a centre stand would mount to the bike. Look underneath and you'll see it. The front is raised to get around the exhaust. Fasten the adapter to the bike, then put the lift under and raise the bike. The bike will remain straight upright. Larry's adapter was made so you could fasten legs to the adapter - to be able to remove the lift and get it out of the way when working on the bike, and for storing the bike over the off-season. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?142501-2nd-Gen-Lift-Adapter
  13. Basic maintenance... Check coolant (test). Should be replaced every 3 years Clutch and brake fluids - check colour - if "off", change Rear wheel gear oil Check date codes on tires. Over 7 years you should consider changing them even if no wear I don't have the break pad part number handy but do a search on here for break pads (search box towards the top of the screen on the right) And congratulations on the bike !
  14. I had one bag sticking and what I did was to push in on the side of the bag to flex it, move the lid around a bit by pushing and pulling on it...and got it free without damaging anything. Look at the other side to get an idea of how the mechanism works, then try what worked for me. Post your results
  15. My condolences to you and your family. As others have said I can't imagine the level of loss you feel. I am truly sorry for your loss.
  16. Your issue is probably related to the way the installation of the passing lights were done. The documentation from Yamaha for the passing lights will give you the "key" to what is going on. From the read only tech section, look at this link. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?43898-Passing-Lamp-Installation The Yamaha installation instructions are : https://www.venturerider.org/passinglamps/passinglamps.pdf From this you'll see that the passing lights can be wired in to either be on all the time, with high beam, or with low beam. You'll see that connected to the low beam the passing light ties into the green wire. If you've lost connectivity on the green wire, then it would explain why passing lights and low beam are not working. Most of us have hooked up the passing lights using a relay. See this link for the diagram. It removes a lot of power going thru the ignition switch. The switch shown in the diagram is the push button switch on the back of the fairing beside the accessory outlet. This button switch is also prone to failure. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?525-Standard-Passing-Light-Relay-Wiring Based on your description and symptoms, your green wire is cut somewhere. When they spliced in the passing light to the green wire they probably damaged it and the wire connection has broken.
  17. Watching the storm on the news. Stay safe !
  18. The accelerating at highway speeds and cutting out is what mine was doing when my pump failed. Think you have the right idea on that. Some people have cleaned or replaced the points on the pump. If you do a search you'll probably find info on it or a pump that you can use that would be compatible but cheaper than the Yamaha one.
  19. Ethanol free gas - https://www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=ON Looks like 91 is the common octane that is ethanol free on the list.
  20. The specs call for lower octane. Try a tank of 87 (or 89) octane and see if that makes a difference.
  21. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet but...Seafoam might help with cleaning the carbs, and do a carb sync. Have you tried premium fuel? These bikes use regular gas (87 octane - or is it 89....whatever the lower one is). Put half a can of Seafoam Motor Treatement in the fuel tank and top it up with premium then give it a really good run. I'd start with these three first (premium, Seafoam, carb sync) before tearing into it. And welcome to the forum from Ontario !
  22. To set the torque on the steering head there is a "special" tool (a spanner). Make sure you look into this before attempting it. A member here sold them a few years ago, not sure if he still has any available. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?134092-Steering-Head-Torque-Values&highlight=steering+head+torque https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?124884-While-adjusting-steering-head-bearings&highlight=steering+head+torque https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?107701-Adjusting-2nd-Gen-head-bearing-nut-while-torn-down&highlight=steering+head+torque (in this one you can see the spanner. Dingy used to make/sell them but don't know what happened to him). The spanner should be available online to purchase or maybe someone in your area has one.
