  1. Thanks. Did that require removing the audio control unit to provide clearance for the GPS? The ball on mine is smaller than 1". Do you know what is the correct size?
  2. I just purchased a used Garmin 765 and looking for some ideas and advice as to location and mounting method. I intend to wire it in to the electrical system also so if anyone has a preference as to which wiring system is better I would appreciate that also. Thanks.
  3. Great find. I bought my 87 new and rode it often for the first 8 years. Riding decreased after we had a child. I really got back into it about 3 years ago and the worst thing you can do is not ride them. It took me about two years, and a lot of work, before it began running great again. These bikes need to run. I'll never make that mistake again.
  4. So, the 765 has an FM transmitter, an audio output jack plus can play mp3 files? Sounds like I should look for one of them. No aux input but I am currently using a Sony cassette converter which really works well. So, all I need is a GPS with an audio out jack. I already have the splitter.
  5. Thanks. Didn't know this was available. I don't have anything that is wireless so I am still using the plug in intercom and music. It looks like this adapter only has one input which I could use for my MP3 but I still wouldn't be able to plug in a GPS also. What would happen if I used a splitter and plugged in the MP3 and GPS? Something bad or would the music play and the GPS directions play also? Has anyone tried that?
  6. I'm looking for a gps unit for my 87 VR. I want the directions to play through the speakers or headsets. So, what you have sounds like what I want. But, you say the audio out plugs into the auxiliary. What is the auxiliary?
  7. I know you checked but it sounds like a fuel problem I had last year. If your pump is activating when you turn on the ignition, but not when the bike is running, it will run until the carbs are empty and then stall. Have you tried connecting a jumper wire directly to the pump? The pump should only run until the bowls are full and then stop so no danger of overfilling the carbs. Or, you can jump it at the relay. Just a thought.
  8. Posted a while ago about relocating my TCI. So, I'm in the process of doing it. I was able to remove both screws from the TCI but only one from the ignition advance unit. Should I continue to try to remove it or just leave it where it is? I am planning on mounting it to the airbox. Does it matter which side faces up? Is it better to cut the tabs off? I have read that there isn't enough room in the left side fairing with the stock radio. Is that correct? Flyinfool recommended replacing the diodes but I'm afraid to mess with it. Are replacements still available?
  9. Planning a Spring trip from Florida and going to spend a few nights somewhere as a base to ride the local roads. Need a hotel and restaurants. Considering Hiawassee, GA or Murphy, NC. I've never been to either so I would appreciate any pros and cons from someone who has. Thanks.
  10. About a year ago I went through a problem with low voltage. There was insufficient voltage getting to the fuel pump relay so the relay would not activate and engage the pump causing the bike not to start and to stall. In addition to replacing the fuse box, I cleaned every contact behind the headlight and also the run/stop switch on the handlebar. This fixed the fuel pump issue, but it also seemed to solve some other minor issues and now the bike is running great and the mpg is back to where it was when new.
  11. Thank you for your helpful replies. I'm not confident in my ability to replace diodes. Did anyone dry it out in an oven while it was disconnected?
  12. Hey everyone and Happy Holidays! While I believe in preventive maintenance and regularly do what is recommended and more, I am also of the belief "if it aint broke don't fix it" which brings me to my current dilemma. My bike is running as well as it has in years. It's an 87 with about 52,000 miles and I bought it new. It has always been garaged but has been ridden in the rain on numerous occasions. I have researched throughout this site on relocating the TCI and, while I know it can be difficult to remove, I believe I can do it. So the question is, should I? Other than the potential problems removing it and the possibility that the wires may not be long enough to get to the new location, are there any other possible problems with relocating it? The last thing I want to do is damage it. I have read that some have been able to remove the screws and others have had to grind down the heads or cut the plastic tabs attached to the TCI or use some other form of easy-out. Also, some have used the attached tabs to screw it to the top of the air box and others have used velcro to attach it. Is there a preferred method? So, as I'm on the fence about doing it, I want some advice regarding the pros and cons. And, some advice on PM if I do remove it. I've read suggestions to open it up and heat it in an oven to dry it out. Is this recommended? Should it be sealed somehow afterwards? As moisture seems to be the enemy, would it help to put a little bag of desiccant inside it? If you have done it, let me know the good, the bad and the ugly. Thanks.
  13. I just booked a room for Saturday, the 10th in Sarasota at the Americas Best Value Inn. Room cost $90 plus and the hotel isn't the greatest but looks to be within walking distance from the downtown events. Booked on Hotels.com. Cancellation until 1/9 if weather looks poor. Here's the link: http://www.hotels.com/hotel/details.html?tab=description&hotelId=194737&arrivalDate=01-10-15&departureDate=01-11-15&rooms[0].numberOfAdults=2&roomno=1&validate=false&previousDateful=false&reviewOrder=date_newest_first A couple of other hotels in the area but this is the cheapest and closer than the Best Western. If you are so inclined, the Ritz Carlton has rooms for $509.
  14. I like the Sarasota suggestion. Maybe do an overnight if rooms aren't outrageous.
  15. I paid $600 for my 1966 BSA Lightning in 1974. Wish I still had it. Only used bike I've bought so far.
  16. Hi All, Can't believe I haven't checked here in almost a month. We were away for a week then just busy I guess. But, we plan on being there on Sunday if it doesn't rain. We have alternative plans if it does. See you, hopefully, on Sunday!
  17. Here it is. No charge, just shipping.
  18. My heart goes out to you. My Samantha is will be 10 on October 10 and I dread the day. She is healthy and I hope she outlives me. But, when the time comes, I will hug her as she drifts off as my heart breaks. Peace.
  19. :rotf: Yup, Tape and Plasti Dip. I replaced mine so you're welcome to it. My problem was the microphones, the cords still worked but looked like s***.
  20. Unfortunately, I won't be attending this M & E. With my 30th anniversary coming up, a cruise planned for the following week, and now a party on the 5th hosted by my family, it just won't work out. Looking forward to future gatherings.

    Headsets

You're right, Dion. My J & M's were 20 years old and they lasted a long time. I have new helmets also. J & M make a great product and I'm not saying these are better and, if the price was the same, I would have stayed with J & M. But, if money is a factor, you may want to try the IMC's.

    Headsets

My headsets weren't working so, with Dion's help, determined the microphones were bad. I wanted a set that plugs into my intercom system. After much research and thought, I decided to buy the cheaper IMC sets from Sierra Electronics for $85 per unit with free shipping. Installed them and, so far, I am very happy with the sound and functionality. They seem to be louder than my old J & M sets. I can keep the volume way down. Plus, they come with a two year warranty. If you are trying to decide, so far, I would suggest giving IMC a try.
