  1. Glad y'all made it home safe, good seeing you folks again...until the next time bro
  2. We are alive I tell you ALIVE!!! I'll be damned buy Scary Jeep did it Got us all the way home with no issues at all. Now I have to say that I wasn't sure we were going to make it at 1st. A little heart to heart with Scary Jeep, and training myself to have a better touch and we made it through all of it. Now there were some interesting spots, Nashville sucked, and Memphis wasn't a lot better, but we didn't take anyone or ourselves out. Had a couple of butt pucker moments, but they came out ok. A wicked storm 100 miles East of Memphis did us in last night and we just stopped and got a room. I was fairly impressed with the mileage, I consistently got in the low 20's and the worst was 17.5 in a strong headwind going through the East side of Arkansas East of Little Rock. I did manage to use 7 gallons of oil in Scary Jeep, yes I said 7 gallons. We would stop about every 200 miles for fuel and I would pour an entire jug in it as it was barely registering on the dipstick. Start over and do it again I have to say, but I'm probably going to rehabilitate Scary Jeep. It's not a whole lot different than me. It's not pretty, kinda rough around the edges, has a bit of a gas issue and is old, but it's got a lions heart and got the job done no matter what it took, so I can definitely relate to it It was great seeing everyone again, even if it was just for 20 hours. Lonna and I love y'all and had a great time breaking bread and being with y'all. Thanks again Freebird for turning you place into a flop house for 5 days....we love ya bro!
  3. For those of you that attended MD at Freebirds, you know what I'm talking about. Lonna and I are shacked up 100 East of Memphis TN right now due to a big storm that was making the "Scary Jeep" even scarier. So we got a room and will hit it again in the morning. Now I have to tell you, there were some fun times on the trip today, especially going through Nashville. Those damn potholes were throwing me all over the place! but we are still alive and going to hit it hard tomorrow morning. Now for those of you that are scratching your head going "Squid...what the hell are you talking about" I'll fill you in a bit. Lonna and I took my pickup to Michigan to leave with her son. he doesn't have a reliable vehicle and is working 6 days a week and really doesn't have time to fix the one he had, or should I say, I have now. He's borrowing my truck until we can find him a better vehicle and we can swap so I can get my truck back. What I am driving back to Texas is an '85 CJ7 and let me tell y'all, it is a scary experience. The front end is a bit loose on this thing, and when it hits bumps it goes all over the place. While we were at MD I was telling folks there that it was a scary ride, hence "Scary Jeep" which is now what I will call it. I know there are folks that love these old Jeeps, but right at this point I am not loving this thing. I am going to have to get into the suspension and fix it. Maybe it will be fun after that, but it's one hell of a ride at this point. So tomorrow we will finish our trek into Texas, and hope Scary Jeep doesn't jump over a ravine
  4. Good to hear y'all made it home relatively unscathed. It was great seeing you again and finally getting to meet Christy, she's a definite keeper my friend, hope she feels better after that smack on the leg
  5. I'm glad to hear y'all have a room, Lonna and I are 100 miles east of Memphis. Ran into a huge storm and I'm not about to drive Scary Jeep through it. Y'all have a good trip tomorrow and be careful.
  6. Be careful Jeff, were stuck 100 miles east of Memphis in a huge storm. Got a room for the night as I couldn't see out of the scary Jeep's windshield
  7. Atleast a BEAR didn't take off with them!!!
  8. Everyone knows your old and slipped out because they knew you needed a nap!
  9. Welcome to our country again Annie
  10. Looked like y'all were having a good time last night from the pics Monty texted me. Hope there will be a bit left when we get there tomorrow
  11. Be careful on your ride, we'll be there tomorrow morning...
  12. Walt, Thanks again for taking your time to help Paul out, you and many others here make me proud to be a member of this group Bravo Zulu!
  13. Thanks for the update Mo, good to hear y'all are doing ok...and what Craig said, get your butts to MD!
  14. Try unplugging the wire harness from the back of the dash and look at the connectors. Look for obvious corrosion and broken wires/spades. Let us know how it looks, electrical gremlins suck!
  15. All the best for the folks involved in the accident.
  16. The feeling is mutual my friend
  17. I'll keep an eye on what y'all are doing as Lonna and I will be caging it in a CJ7 that we are bringing back down south. We'll be at my Dads and leaving from there to head to Don's. If it works out, we'll hook up with the caravan and follow y'all down into Ohio.
  18. Anytime you do any playing with the carbs, it is a good idea to put a carb sync on it. Many of us here have bit the bullet and purchased a Carbtune. I use mine ALL the time, and there are many here in the Houston area that are happy I have one they can use. One of the best tools I have spent money on. I would second also that you turn the idle up slightly.
  19. The Shinko 230 Tourmaster is a decent tire for a great price. I have had several sets of them and right now I have a set that is on an '83 I have. The rear generally doesn't last a long time, I got 7500 miles out of my last one. That being said, the front went over 12K for mileage and they stick like glue. They are a softer compound so this is why they dont get a lot of miles. I have just purchased a different set of Shinko's for my '86, the 777 and I like the cuts on them. I dont expect to get a lot of mileage out of them either, the compound is soft, but I expect that the performance will be very good. The 777's cost me $168 shipped to my door through motorcycle superstores warehouse. My next set of tires for the '86 will probably be the Avon Venoms, which I have used for years. I just cheaped out this time and went for the different Shinkos so I could comment on how they perform and last.
  20. Or once you get in with Toyota, you can have them transfer you to San Antonio where they make the Tundra. Then you would be close to plenty of members
  21. Paul, It appears that you can check the resistance on the pick up coils. It's the 5 wire plug, disconnect it and measure between the black and the remaining 4 other wires. Ensure that you are measuring the wire that is going down to the side case and not the section going into the wiring harness of the bike. Their colors are Orange, Grey, White/Green, White/Red the ohm reading your looking for is between 93.5 and 126.5. If you have a manual it is in the #7 section, electrical area. It's page 7-36 in my '86 to '93 manual, I'm sure it's close in the 1200 manual as well.
  22. Just worth here, make sure the bore is perfect. I have not personally had good luck with rebuilding slaves. That could just be me, I have done 4 and 3 haven't lasted. It has to be clean enough to eat off.
