  1. Went up to the cabin Thursday evening with friends for the annual Guy Camp Run. Been doing it every Late Winter / Early Spring for the last 30 or so years. Roads weren't all that bad, but the access roads down to the cabins weren't plowed. Snow was only about 18 inches deep, and the cabin is about a quarter mile from the paved road, so I figured we'd try it. Bad move. Momentum got us about 200 feet before we stopped, and when it stopped, it stopped. No forward, no backward, just a lot of wheel spinning without movement. We ended up carrying all the stuff to the cabin, but walking was tough. What made it so bad was that the base was ice, with about 16 inches of fine powder snow, then two inches on top that would almost support my weight, but each step would break through. When we tried digging out, I found that I could pull this ice cap up in big sheets, like plywood. Between high siding on this ice cap,....trying to break it and push it as I drove, and with only ice underneath, it took a couple of hours to hand winch the truck back close enough to the road for a good samaritan passer by to pull me out by staying on the plowed and mostly dry road. The 0 degree weather didn't help much either. Anyhoo, we ended up leaving the truck out at the road for fear of getting stuck again. We made it home in one piece, without damaging the truck or ourselves. I need better tires and chains if I'm ever gonna try that again....and even then, I don't know that I'd try it again.
  2. Been up to the cabin and without internet since Thursday afternoon. I'd like to see you put 24v directly to the pilot valve to see if it opens, (momentary test) It's possible that the pilot valve has failed in such a way that it's drawing high amperage when power is applied. Another thing to consider is that, while I don't know that it'd be a problem, 29v is a bit high. Many electronic controls start to get flaky above 28, ...or at least that's what I'm told is the danger point for most energy management equipment. I'm back to the world of phone and internet service, so call if you need to.
  3. I came across this post on Columbus, OH Craigslist.[h=2] Re: Helmet laws (The Hebe)[/h] Because of Obamacare, the Ohio legislature is set to review the current motorcycle helmet law in committee in 2017. States without compulsory helmet laws will receive less federal highway dollars starting in 2018 because of Obamacare. do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers post id: 4917761458 posted: 9 hours ago email to friend ♥ best of [?]
  4. Good luck,....let us know how it goes.
  5. My understanding (in Columbus,Ohio) is that there was no law on the books preventing open carry, but if you did it you'd be picked up for creating a public nuisance or some other charge. An armed society is a polite society. I think it's pretty cool that they're starting to lift these restrictions. I'll bet the lawyers love it too. There's the potential for lots of future business.
  6. Enjoy !!!
  7. Wow, that brings back memories. I don't think I've had to deal with one of those for 10 years or more. They used to make a version of that control that mounted to the top of the gas valve. I'll do a bit of checking, but I'd be a bit surprised if you can still get 'em. It's entirely possible that the ignition lead has weak insulation and is shorting. If you think this is the issue, you may want to try rerouting the wire, keeping it away from any metal where it can find a ground....as best you can.... The white wire will lead to your flame sensor. You may want to make sure all connections to the flame sensor are clean and tight. You may also want to take a small wire brush or steel wool to clean any rusted terminals, and especially the flame sensor rod. (Avoid using sandcloth) This flame sensor circuit will be carrying only a couple millionths of an amp, as the flame sense signal, so it's important that it be a good circuit. If you need a new ignition lead, lemme know what the ends look like and how long it is and I'll see if I can come up with one for you. If the burner control is failing, I think I'd opt for a newer style, (much cheaper to buy, and I can probably send one that'll work your way for free)...the only issue there is it'll take a bit of rewiring. I can walk you through it. Whatever control you use, you should be able to retain the same flame sensor and electrode. For now, let's hope it works long enough to get you through this weather, but let me know where you want to go from here.
  8. A few pics of the components in question will take most if not all of the guesswork out of it. As old as it is, it should be pretty simple figure out if I know what we're working with.
  9. Need more info and detailed pics. Spark light or hot surface ignite.....pilot ignition or direct....what happens when it goes into an ignition sequence?... Need info before even an educated guess can be attempted. 27 yrs as an HVAC Tech. PS: If you look me up you'll find my phone #. Feel free to gimme a call if you think I can help.
  10. My first bike was a mini bike, then a ? 69 ? Honda Z 50. Started riding the street on a Honda XL350, but I rode that bike off road more than on. My first "Real" street bike was a 79 Honda 750 super sport, but the oldest pick I have is my second street bike, a 80 Honda 750 super sport. I loved that bike, and would have given up my car before I ever gave up that bike. This pic would have been taken about 1985 in Key Largo, FL, and the little tyke on the back is my niece.
  11. I'm very pleased to see folks able to do this, but open carry has never been my thing. It makes a lot of people uncomfortable, and that's not what I want to do. Like Cowpuc said, that weapon looks like it'd be easy to grab by a crook. If it's concealed, it may take an extra second to access, but that's where situational awareness comes in. Whether you're carrying or not, keep that Spidey sense frosty.
  12. Got 'em. Very nice. Thanks.
  13. Glad to hear that you're ok. Hope ya stay that way. When in doubt, get checked out. If there IS something going on, it can get ugly quick if you ignore it. Take care of yourself....we need ya around here.
  14. Wow ! Glad you made it through as well as you did. These beasts aren't like dirt bikes....when they go down hard you don't want to get caught under them. Your description sounds like a blowout, but like someone said, the rear tire doesn't look flat. I'm sure all of us are eager to hear what caused this. At least it didn't happen in prime riding season....Gives you some time to mend. Take care my friend.
  15. I've never heard ya badmouth the Venture, and, to the contrary, I've always felt that you took the jabs at your Harley very well. I for one say he's full of crap.
  16. Her birthday's coming up in March, and when I axe what she wants, she gives the usual..."Nothing"....or "I don't know"..... So I figgered...what says Happy Birthday better than a set of Diamond R armrests for the back of my Second Gen. Hey.....they're not for me.....she's the one that'll get to use 'em. We were talking about the differences between the first and second gen bikes the other day, and she said she couldn't get her arms comfy on the second gen, but otherwise loves the bike. I'm hopin' she likes them. A bit pricey for what they are, but she's worth it.
  17. I'd lent my first gen (87) to a friend, and I was on my second gen (06) and we got the chance to confirm what I already knew. It wasn't even close. Derned rev limiter on the second gen is a PITA. First gen is definitley faster, but the second gen is definitley more comfortable. I find that when I'm picking one for a ride, I usually go with the second gen.
  18. Ain't doin' nuttin. LOL After typing the text, I click on "Standard Smiles", click on the happy fellow I wanna display, and that's what comes up. It's done that since the upgrade, although I typically delete the text and symbols before posting. Just like that.
  19. It's been a few days. Next time I see something interesting, I'll try again. Thanks.
  20. Just sayin: The last two times I tried to post an ad that may be of interest to someone, it wouldn't let me post it in the links to classifieds section. I got an error message saying that I'd exceeded the allowable # of tags allowed. Not sure what that even means. I guess I'll just have to quit tryin'. And what's up with the text that shows up when I add one of the smiles?
  21. For what it's worth. I bought a 2001 Damon Challenger 34' class A a few years back and am quite pleased with it. Plane Jane, no slides, two rooftop a/c units, 5kw generator, Triton V10 with a Ford Workhorse chassis. I was looking for an intro RV, since I don't have the free time to travel as much as I'd like, and was thinking that I'd like to learn the tricks so that when I retire I can buy one to travel the country with. Still gonna keep the house, but I'd like to stretch my legs a bit. All that being said, this basic RV has treated me well. I'm not sure how well it'd tow a car though. With a trailer with my bike on it, I was down to 55mph on some killer hills in PA on a trip back from Ocean City. Without the trailer, that little V10 keeps up the speed well. Don't remember ever falling below 70 on any hills if I didn't want to. Rolling on flat ground, keeping it at 65 I can get as much as 10mpg. Going through hill country towning a trailer, it's been as low as 7mpg. I do disagree with the cliche' that the happiest days are when you buy / sell it. I'm glad I bought mine, ....just wish I got to use it more. (Typically 3k miles a year) I'm sure you'll enjoy yours. Just be ready for a bit of a learning curve. Good luck, and good travels.
  22. Congratulations !!! You've worked hard an long to get here, so take the bull by the horns and do what ya gotta do to enjoy life.... My older brother retired late last September, and is in the final stages of getting his affairs in order to move back to the Florida Keys, where he lived in the late 70s and through the 80s. He's finding out that housing in Key Largo is pretty expensive, so he's planning on buying a place in the lower keys. He's going down next week to look at a couple of places and potentially make the deal. (He's actually been looking for over a year) He's THRILLED. I'm happy for him (and a little jealous), but will hate to have him move so far away. Probably won't get to see him much, but I'll have to try to make it down there every once in a while. Sigh.....
  23. Got a Garmin Zumo 665LM for the bike, ....a set of Frog Toggs for riding (Heavier that my other set).......A camera to mount on the bike.....a box of Sucker Punch cigars. (My favorite from last years Cigarnival)...Cologne, socks, The Breaking Bad DVD set...a coupla' books, and a bear hat.
  24. I've 3 days paid time off to use up, so I'm taking today, Friday and New years Eve off. I generally don't work holidays, nor do I get paid for them. And only one week vacation to boot, but I can't complain. I can take time off without pay whenever I want, (even on short notice) and make a decent buck.
  25. They're in 2 sheds and one garage, and some of them are covered and pretty well buried. Pics would be a problem, but all the running bikes have had pics posted on this site at one time or another.
