  1. After a bit of searching, I remembered it is skydoc_17 that has the loaner kit. You do need to buy the head cover gaskets from him to use the kit. I have purchased many items from Earl and have to say his quality is excellent and his prices are reasonable. His customer service is unbeatable.
  2. If you promise to send it back when you are done, you can borrow mine. There is also a shim kit from one of the members(can't remember who) that has a tool with it. IIRC it was cost of shipping and add a shim to the kit. Someone who has used it will chime in soon, I'm sure. Do you have a good source for shims? Your local Yamaha dealer should have them in stock as they are still used for other models. My local dealer actually trades them for free.
  3. All is good so far. I knew going back there was going to be some time needed to find a home for me. About 4 months in and I still don't have a title. Not that it's an issue. They way the company works is more like a mom and pop entrepreneurial kind of thing rather than the multi million dollar a year enterprise it truly is. I'll find my place, or make one that suits me.
  4. 7/8" or 1" bars? The ISO Grips are not model specific. Just get the right diameter for your bars. They might come in a couple different lengths, but I don't think so. On a side note; I have genuine Kury ISOs on my '83 Ventue and I have had chicom knock offs on a couple other bikes and I can say it's nearly impossible to tell the difference.
  5. I feel for you Steven! I'm crunching Ranger Candy today and all I did was wheel bearings! Every Crown Vic Police Package I have ever encountered needed the rear end replaced. Most of them had been "repaired" once or twice previously.
  6. So, I started the day as usual with my NY Strip and coffee breakfast. Then off to the wallyworld and local owned grocery to pick up victuals. Got the weekly lawn work done and had lunch while perusing fleabay. Lo and behold, I actually found some plastic bits for The Beast that I sorely need at reasonable prices. The pics look good, but we all know how much that means. After noticing how much I spent on stuff for the bike, I was feeling guilty about not having done some much needed work on the wife's car. I've been putting it off cause it was going to be a PITA. So, off to Autozone for the parts and specialty tools. Then four hours of back breaking, knuckle busting, knee scraping fun! Well, the font wheel bearings aren't serenading Kris any more. Like I said, a very productive day, all in all.
  7. Is it gaining or losing time? There are a couple little buttons next to the clock... They work like magic, kinda:Laugh:
  8. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DZY529X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I just got this one at Amazon. It works well. Nice and small but quickly and easily pumps up to 70psi. I haven't had it long enough to rate it's durability.
  9. Oh, I'm always packin' Well, The guy called me this morning and asked if we could meet today rather than Sunday. I said Sure, loaded the Maxim on the truck, grabbed some of my less often utilized shootin' irons and headed down the road. Only an hour and 20 minutes or so. About half way there he texts me saying he has to run out to grab some stuff but the bike's in the driveway and I could feel free to check it out if he was back yet. I pulled in and there it was. Looked =just like the picture from CL Then I walked around to other side to find the left half main fairing was literal broken in half, the lower on the left side was mostly duct tape and the left side engine cover was hanging on by a wish and a prayer. I looked closer at everything. Nearly all the tabs, flanges and connection points were broken or missing. The trunk had a total of 2 screws combined on both hinges. One of the trunk latch hooks was busted off. The passenger back rest was just flopping loose with the adjuster bar not even in the brackets(at least it was there). The seat wasn't in terrible shape, just the start of the front edge tear. He had left the key in the ignition so I started her up. I have to say the engine sounded very nice. Fired right up no choke and idled very smooth around 900 rpm. Very quiet. The radio worked, but I didn't mess around with the controls much. I switch to ACCY and checked the CLASS system. It seemed to work, though I don't have any experience with it. The automatic Low, Med and Hi setting worked but I could not figure out how to enter the manual mode. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Nearly every piece of the fairing would need replaced or major repair. The trunk might have been fixable. Oh yea, no rear brake. The pedal just dropped like a rock. So here is the description that went with the above pic on CL When will I learn. I am the only person who ever posted something on CL that didn't lie though their teeth. I offered to trade the Maxim for it if he gave me $300.00 He wasn't amused. Well at least I don't have to feel bad that he's going to have to pay $20.00 for a duplicate title. The notary he went to refused to notarize his signature without having the buyer information filled in. His current title is now technically in my name.
  10. I would like to ask that everyone here think good and happy thoughts and keep your fingers crossed for me as I once again foray into the fantasy world that is Craig's List. Yes, I am going to try this one more time. A 1986 Venture Royale is posted for sale or trade about 2 hours down the pike from me. The seller seems to be reasonable in our communications. The pictures look good but not "Glamour Shot", if you know what I'm saying. He is amenable to a pure horse trade. True barter style transaction. I've got what he wants and he's got what I want. I hope. My last CL encounter was , shall we say less than fruitful? Actually, it nearly ended in chaos and destruction. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! OK, it wasn't quite that bad, but close! Anyway, The plan is that we meet up and seal the deal this Sunday. So, like I said keep your fingers crossed!
  11. I have the Harbor Freight manual tire change machine with the motorcycle adapter. I would not say it makes the work effortless, but it certainly makes it easier by an order of magnitude. Be advised, the mount/dismount tool is OK for steel auto wheels but it will destroy your motorcycle wheels. I bought a "duck head" tool head on ebay and attached it to the OE tool bar with carriage bolts and 3/4" plywood. I works well and was cheap. You will also want to bend the rim clamps in so they wrap around the rim better and add either a strap or a pin to stop the wheel from rotating in the clamps.
  12. The GS series are solid bikes. I had an '82 GS850L that I bagged and mounted a Vetter WindJammer 2 on it. It was my long haul bike until I got the Venture. I'd pick it up if the price was right. Maybe $700-800 if it is really good cosmetic and mechanical condition. $0.02, YMMV
  13. I'll have the ColorTune there.
  14. I could have saved myself a couple hours work if I'd looked at the manual closer at first! It was indeed the start switch. I pulled it apart, cleaned it up and she's shining and flashing all proper now. On a side note, I didn't lose any screws or have any left over after reassembling the fairing. That is a rare occurrence for me.
  15. It appears I misunderstood the manual. By "Starter Switch" it means the push to start button, not the main ignition lock switch. That'll be much easier to check when the rain stops.
  16. It looks like the starter switch is the culprit. I followed the Yamaha factory manual's trouble shooting flow chart and after realizing the reserve lighting unit is easier to get to than the starter switch, found there is no 12V at the RLU. According to the flow chart this points to a) a bad head light fuse(checked OK), b) a bad starter switch(haven't pulled it yet) or c) the wiring of the above components. Unfortunately, I'm forced to work on this outside as my shop is overflowing with other projects right now and the weather is not cooperating. I have never had to pull the starter switch before. Is there an "easy" way?
  17. '83 Standard 1200 My head light and turn signals quit working while parked for a couple days. The marker lights work. The hazards flash. The head light does not come on in high or low beam. The head light warning light is not on. I tried two spare bulbs just to be sure. Here's the head scratching thing. I measure 12 VDC at the head light connector both in high and low beam positions measured through the connector, not to frame ground. Would the reserve lighting unit possibly be the culprit?
  18. Fortunately, Ohio hasn't completely trampled the Constitution into oblivion. I would never sell or give a gun to anyone I wasn't sure about. I always ask if they are CCW holders and ask to see their license if they are. If not, and I don't get a bad vibe I just ask for an Ohio DL and have them sign a bill of sale stating they are not prohibited from owning a firearm. All perfectly legal in Ohio. And, BTW it is a felony to KNOWINGLY sell or provide a firearm to a felon or otherwise prohibited person.
  19. Well, it looks like the trade for the '89 is not going to happen. I am, hopefully meeting up with the owner of an '86 to do some horse trading today. He want's a smaller bike and likes guns. I have a smaller bike('82 Yamaha Maxim 750) and more than a few guns. Sounds like a match made in Venture Heaven. The maxim has been in storage for nearly 2 years. I remember it being much more shiny and clean than it actually is. Funny how the memory works, isn't it? I was thinking the Maxim's worth at about $800. Low mileage, runs good, has always been reliable, etc. Well, Sow I'm thinking $500-$600 is more realistic. she's seeping oil at the valve cover gaskets and after sitting so long, the carbs definitely need a good cleaning. She started right up and runs like a champ but I can't get the idle dialed in, even after a quick sync. The throttle hangs a bit on deceleration. Hang may not be the right word. The revs don't drop like a rock and the engine braking is not crisp. It's more a slow decline in rpms. It's not mechanical. The cable is free and the linkages snap back to idle position instantly. The CV slides are just sluggish. She rolls off idle and snaps your head back when you twist the wick though. I think I have enough lead slinging bits to make the deal good for both of us. I sure hope he does his own work and likes the restore process like I do. Hopefully Ill be posting pictures of my '86 Gen1 MK2 later today!
  20. That's good to hear. What about the frame? are the'86 frames prone to breaking like the '83? In case it's not obvious, I am looking at an '86 Royale as well as the '89. The '86 has slightly more miles on the clock than the '89 but is looking good as far as trade possibilities. It might let me keep The Beast in the family as well.
  21. Does anyone know what serial number is the end of the second gear issue? I recall it being talked about in several threads, but I can't remember if there was definitive #.
  22. So, the weekend was a bust. The '89 owner had to work and wound up working late Sunday so we did not meet up. I hope he hasn't changed his mind as I have gotten myself excited about the trade. I tend to do that and then get totally bummed if things don't work out.
  23. Half way is only about 1/2 hour to 45 min. depending on exactly where he is in Louisville. I'd waste that on a ride just to ride
