  1. O man, not what I wanted to read at all today. Prayers going out for Bob and his family.
  2. Ok so now here is a good one for you all to maybe ponder... Last night I pulled the carbs as I could not get them to do what I needed too. But I also had a spare set setting around. So I put them on the bike and fired her up and she runs beautifully on them. The only thing is there off my 83 only difference I see is part number, Jet size and the vacuum advance port on number 2 carburetor which I plugged that up and synced up the carbs. The 87 has 37.5 jet size where as the 83 has 42 then the main jet on the 87 is 125 and the 83 is the 117.5 I didn't go thru all the carburetor parts but that was my 2 main curiosity. Also the bike ran and idled for a good 30 minutes last night it don't seem to over heat but did bubble a little bit in the recovery tank. I also accidently filled it too much too tho. Then the two annoying tubes that go into the air box look like fun to get back on as the set up is just a little different then on the 83. I haven't fully installed the carbs either just put the choke cable and fuel hose on it. The other set of carbs I am betting has plugged idle jets as it will not run with out choke or idle screw being screwed to the max. Not to mention most of the mixture screws were better then 3 turns out. #4 was out 4.25 turns! Well I am gonna get back to it after a while.
  3. Almost a different BIKE!! What are you using to polish the metal of the motor?
  4. It's got 68,xxx One other things I am gonna assume number 4 cylinder is running about 180 temp the rest were in the 140 range. I don't want to run it much longer then that till I have the Radiator back on. First I need to replace the valve cover gasket in the front the rear has already been replaced. I do want to get the engine power washed, after sitting for a few years its quite dirty! But did plan on doing a compression check.
  5. So I picked up a New to me 87 Venture Royal Sunday afternoon for $400 its got the famous E4 Code. Also when I was looking over the carbs I noticed a hose coming off the Number 1 Intake port with a screw in the end of it. Is that where The vacuum actuator for the cruise control feeds from? I bought the bike not hearing it run the guy said it ran darn good before he said it got hot, Which leads to another question. Did the temp gauge work correctly on the 87's? He said it was a 90 degree day when it happened so he replaced the water pump and never finished putting it back together. I got it home and fired it up with some starting fluid then ran some gas from a gas jug later on to move it temporarily. I used my weedeater gas jug and filled the bowls first and found a float or two sticking, It don't seem to be sticking now and I have moved it outside to allow room in the garage to put the 83s up and change the tire on the 83 I just sold. Seems CB traffic is also very quiet these days! Only thing I don't have for the bike is the head sets and found some of those on Ebay. Also once I get the solders fixed on the Air ride does it only set in the accessory position or should I be able to do it with the bike running? I know the compressor works because it came on in Accessory position. I tried to look that up in the manual but it don't state that or maybe I missed it somewhere. Anyways here is some pictures of the bike.
  6. How did it go? I just picked up an 87 VR and gotta tell you it looks fun to get to that tire! Now my 83 I removed a little more then 4 bolts which would be the bolts at the Saddle bag guards on the back and the ones next to the gas tank and the one in the middle of that gas tank! Then of course I pulled the seat to get to that bolt and unplugged the plugg that ran to the back which I believe if memory serves me right I also unplugged the fuel sending unit. Not sure if the same can be done with the 87. Is it possible to just remove the bag lids and get to the seat that way?
  7. Also another possibility on the vacuum being plugged someone had the 41r TCI unit in the bike which runs off the sync port on number 2 carb.
  8. Who exactly is working on your carbs? Those plugs appear to be in the correct positions, i have rebuilt 12 carbs on these 83s counting each one, so 3 sets. I haven't been on much lately got way way to much stuff going on. those plugs should also be replaced IMHO! The big plug goes in the middle with that piece flipped down the small plug should fit snug over the pilot jet, then there should be another jet at the bottom basically just a brass screw with a hole in. I invested in an ultrasonic cleaner and it works really well for clearing out the very small passages in the carbs. But if it were me I would have him replace the idle jet screw like it says in the video. That's just my Input. I bought a gold and cream 87. Guy originally put it up as an 83 on facebook. It is a pretty complete bike. Also if you by chance have a red or orange box for the TCI its possible its the reason the vacuum port is plugged off. I have an aftermarket TCI unit from regulatorsrectifers.com it goes off voltage some how and there is a bit of a difference between Tinker and Riva. Tinker being the one with the aftermarket in it and she seems to more of a boost then Riva. Sorry to ramble but just suggesting possibilities.
  9. prayers up for bobby, thanks for the updates Tom
  10. Yeah that ain't no joke. I may be one of them that came back today. I took a Short Hiades just been busy. But i couldnt even see where i was quoted or anything till i paid my membership.
  11. Prayers for Bobby You got this,
  12. I have a crazy question for you all, this last time I flushed my fluids I used Dot 4 prestone brake fluid. I have issue with front brake getting soft which is perfectly fine in the morning at first start or when it cools down. A guy I ride with lost his clutch seemed to be heat related and I believe he used same thing. Makes me wonder if there isn't and issue with that brand of Brake Fluid. Just my 2 cents!
  13. Here is the Bike I Paid $250 for out of Kansas a couple months back that ran had to get key made!
  14. I honest to God Think these bikes look good as baggers! You put the trunk on there they don't look so good. I mean I still like the looks but its way better without the trunk! IMHO
  15. My metzler 888 were quite old but very good tread and no dry rot I ran with them for a couple thousand miles! Do they still have the Little tips on them? I also have a tire from 185 on tinker don't know if its from 1985 or 1995 tire seems fine rides good at 60 MPH but I won't ride the tail of the dragon with it! LOL
  16. Yeah it is, I discovered it when people were trying to figure out something better to plan rides, I today after being in the sun Have Lobster Arms!!
  17. Only time I attempt to shut it off is when I pull tank to replace the fuel Filter!!!
  18. Went on a 150 mile trip to Disney Oklahoma and used REVER to Track my ride and it was an awesome one!! https://a.rever.co/embed/rides/1362105
  19. DO IT!! LMFAO that was quite funny there Sir, You know I didn't try and I may still have the Vstar petcock laying around. If I do I will see if it will work on these tanks! Nope they thought it would be a good idea to put the petcock with no reserve, and a hastle to change your fuel filters!! On the bright side at least we don't gotta do a complete tear down to change the air filter!!
  20. But $800? I Don't know if I would pay that much knowing about a 2nd gear issue. Also plastics look a little faded and that tells me they may be kind of brittle.
  21. Your plugs in the back, also check grounds too. Believe they are grounded by the nuts back there underneath your luggage rack.
  22. I have been watching a guy named Jonathon W on Youtube, he has got some pretty rusty looking motors going again! I think what I am gonna do is tear down the engine just to see what it looks like. But i am gonna throw in my used motor oil in it, and poor some in the intakes. so as to not let it rust up any worse then it already is, I think you can get a scope from Harbor Freight which I have a store here in Joplin!
  23. Could probably make one with a spare headlight knob I guess! LOL
