    89 VR Big Red
  1. So my 89 VR turn signals don't work. The front ones come on but don't flash. The rear ones don't even come on. Whats a good place to start?
  2. Good day to all. I just bought an 89 VR with only 37K on it. I have it in the shop but the guys way behind so I want to take a crack at fixing some issues myself. 1. First is an oil leak from where the stator wires come through the engine block. I figure this is due to an air tube of some type being blocked and creating back pressure, but I could be wrong. Any feedback on this would be welcome. 2. Runs pretty rough. Is it OK to run SEA FOAM through it or put this in the carbs and let it sit then drain it out. I've seen other videos of people doing this to their bikes and it seems to work.
  3. Do they make a simple, replacement seal kit or do I need to order each individually? This is my first rodeo working on my bike. Where's the best place to order.
  4. Thanks there Jeff. I was hoping that was the case. I can do that.
  5. I'm looking to replace the starter on my 86 VR. Since I have to pull the radiator I was wondering what seals I need to buy, if any.
  6. Good for you Dan, welcome. I bought an 86 as well four years ago. Some of the electronics are fussy, but it never lets me down. Plan on riding from WV to ND this summer for a reunion. Might try and get to Freebirds maintenance day on June 11.
  7. So I went on a morning ride through the country side this past weekend. I'd had the cruise on because I seem to fight numbness in my right hand. Was only going around 40mph, and as I was coming to a right hand curve I went to put my hand on the gas when the bike just died. Took only a second or two when I realized I'd hit the kill switch. I turned it back on as I finished the turn and it came back to life with a loud "BANG". Sounded like a gun went off. Well there was a guy, with his back to me along the road, strapping down his 4 wheeler as I went by. I did see him jump out of his skin. Not sure who was more surpised, him or me. Anyway, it was a good laugh for the morning.
  8. After reviewing most of the posts on this issue I decided to take the time to resolder the entire circuit card. I did attempt to fix the ones I thought needed it, but, at the time I had a pretty poor soldering iron. So I took the time, and guess what, it works great:-) Feel blessed that it works. I was not having any luck finding simple schrader valves to put in the air lines. Great advice. Great web site. Roger
  9. Thanks Bert2006, but I'm trying to find a place/link for the schrader conversions so I can put them on the shock air lines. I've been researching all day, and can't seem to come up with anything.
  10. Would you happen to know where I can get the parts?
  11. Would anyone have a link to the parts I need so I can remove my compressor from my 88 VR and just have schrader valves to put air in:-) Not having much luck locating it. Thanks:301:
  12. Gentlemen, So what's this seat mod we're talking about. Tried to find a link for it. My 86 seat is just the pits. Was going to buy a gel pad but wanted to see what the todo was about from Rick First. Thanks Roger:301:
  13. So if I'm going to eliminate the onboard compressor all together and install progressive springs in the front. How do I go about putting air in the shocks. Sorry, sometimes I just can't picture it.
  14. Thanks so much for all the feedback. Good places to start. I have the bike in storage/shop until spring so I can get organized. I don't know if the front tire was balanced properly. It was installed when I bought the bike. I doubt if the shocks have ever been upgraded so I'll install progressive springs and have the other things done as well.
