painterman67 Posted February 22, 2011 #1 Posted February 22, 2011 OK everybody, Im getting ready to change the oil on my 91 vr. I found a web page that does oil filter cross reference(http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html). It states that my bike should use the ch6002. And that is what I have been using since I bought the bike 3 yrs ago. Now for my problem. The ch6002 is no longer available and all that can be found to order from yamah dealor or auto stores is the K&N replacement at almost $15. Im cheap and woould love to find a better option. I looked at the specs on the canister filters and the ch6002 and the ch6003 are almost identical in dementions. Will the ch6003 filter work as they are readily available and cost less than $5? Nay sugestions will be apreciated. I seem to remeber a post that said these 2 filters were intercahngable but want to make sure before I take it apart and try. Tahnks in advance. David
flb_78 Posted February 22, 2011 #2 Posted February 22, 2011 Have you checked about the Wix #24933 with Napa and other parts houses? There is also an adapter plate available that allows you to use a spin on oil filter.
painterman67 Posted February 22, 2011 Author #3 Posted February 22, 2011 yeah I actually did check....napa doesnt have it but can order it for $12.50.....I am seriously considering the spin on adapter. David
Flyinfool Posted February 22, 2011 #4 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) Something else to consider from another thread. One of the filter manufacturers states that even though the auto filter is dimensionally identical to the MC filter the innards are different as most MC require a freer flowing filter than a car due to weaker oil pumps on bikes. My theory is that even premium oil and filters are still a lot cheaper than new engines. I got mine from NAPA, (The yami stealer also did not stock it) I just went in and asked for the filter for my bike. They had to order it but it was there the next day. I got 2 so I have one on the shelf ready for when it is needed so then I am not rushed to find one. when I put this one on I will order another for next time. Edited February 22, 2011 by Flyinfool
MiCarl Posted February 22, 2011 #5 Posted February 22, 2011 Where did you get the information that the CH6002 is discontinued? If you look up the Venture on the Fram web site it still recommends the CH6002. HERE is a pop up I got on their web site just now that lists the filter and a number of competitor cross references. A search on the web shows Bobs Cycle Supply has them in stock, Amazon has 12 in stock, Rad Toys Central has 13 in stock, Advance Auto is selling them on the web and I have 3 in stock in my store. I just called my supplier and they have 38 they can ship me today. If it's really discontinued I'll get all 38, but I'm skeptical.
OutKast Posted February 22, 2011 #6 Posted February 22, 2011 Painterman - Advance around here quit stocking them in the stores, but still has them in the warehouse. Ask at the counter. They should have them no later than next day.
painterman67 Posted February 22, 2011 Author #7 Posted February 22, 2011 Carl and Outcast maybey discontinued is the wrong word.....advance auto does not carry them in the store and whenI tried to order on from them they told me they couldnt get them anymore and then tried to sell me the K&N............Ill try another advance tommorow . Tahnks guys.....Ive got the ch6003 in hand and was wandering if it would work till I can get a few orderd to have in the shed. David
dingy Posted February 22, 2011 #8 Posted February 22, 2011 There has to be a difference in the filter. A manufacturer will not carry two p/n for the same item. Length, diameter, grommet size, filter pressure rating, etc., something is different. $15 is cheap if it protects motor. I would rather have the NAPA filter to start with. They are under $10 for the last two I got. I just ordered a bunch of stuff from partshark & I got two OEM's from them for under $6 each though. Gary
painterman67 Posted February 22, 2011 Author #9 Posted February 22, 2011 see the link dingy and itll give you the dementions............ they are just a tad bit different ...........thats why i was asking as its getting hard to find the ch6002 here. Advance Auto was the last to carry it and local dealor says no go ..he cant get one.either in ch6002 or factory. david
dingy Posted February 22, 2011 #10 Posted February 22, 2011 CH6002 24933 ML16802 1.583 3.957 0.772 CH6003 24934 ML16803 1.441 2.996 0.768 If these are the numbers you are talking about, you should look at them again. 4th column is width, close to an 1/8" 5th column is diameter, almost an 1" Id is close enough for the girls I know. No way I put that filter in my motor. Not to save $8., but it's your bike. Gary
skydoc_17 Posted February 22, 2011 #11 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) The part number has changed on the oil filter from Yamaha. The old 26H-xxx number is now 1J7-13441-10-00. The next thing I wanted to say is that I wouldn't run a FRAM filter in my bicycle much less any motorcycle I own. I have seen way to many of these filters go to BYPASS after only a few hundred miles to trust any engine to them. There is an English company called UNI that makes the "Hiflo" filter for the First Gen. VR, the part number for that filter is HF146. In my opinion, this is an acceptable replacement for the Yamaha oil filter. With the engine oil being the "life blood" of your motor, do you really want to do the "Snoopy Dance" about the fact that you spent $3.00 on a "wanna be" oil filter for your bike? I can remember a time when there was an adapter "can" made for automotive filters where a roll of toilet paper could be used instead of a "real" oil filter. For darned good reasons, that silliness was nipped in the bud. I am all about saving a few bucks on parts for my bike, but past a certain point, the rebuild of an engine, (or scrapping of the entire motorcycle because of engine failure) or the purchase of a used motor, would buy a boatload of better quality oil filters. I have seen more than one person spend a LOT of money fixing a "cheap fix". Earl Edited February 22, 2011 by skydoc_17
friesman Posted February 22, 2011 #12 Posted February 22, 2011 THe Spin on adapter from RIVCO sure makes it easy to change oil,on the G1 bike and Ive wondered about how it changes the filtration qualities in the motor. Brian
painterman67 Posted February 22, 2011 Author #13 Posted February 22, 2011 Gary, Earl thanks thats the answer I was trying to find..Ill take the one I have back and see what I can come up with..........jsut haveing a hard time finding one and everybody says the K&N is a good filter Ive just never been satisfied with them..........had a few K&N airfilter come apart so Im gun shy and the cost in my opinion is a little steep. David

skydoc_17 Posted February 22, 2011 #16 Posted February 22, 2011 Hey Gary, I did make a mistake on the Rev. number on the stock oil filter from Yamaha. The correct part number is in fact: 1J7-13441-10-00 I have corrected that previous post. Thanks for bringing that error to my attention. Earl
ddoggma Posted February 22, 2011 #17 Posted February 22, 2011 Im getting mine from NAPA. Part #PS4933. They have them the next day for me, at about 6.50 a piece. I think its a WIX filter. Looks well made, comes with all the gaskets.
timgray Posted February 24, 2011 #18 Posted February 24, 2011 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,27475,parttype,5340 $4.52 for the oil filter WIX in fact. and they come with the o rings, the yamaha dealers pick the out of the box and sell them separately to up profits.
coy55boy Posted February 24, 2011 #19 Posted February 24, 2011 I use the Purolator PL10193 Pure One filter from Amazon. Only $5 bucks and it works great. I did a lot of research on oil filters before choosing this one. It is one of the best filters available and is readily available. OutKast Posted February 25, 2011 #21 Posted February 25, 2011 David - that purolater is a spin-on, you would have to buy the adapter plate.
Trader Posted February 25, 2011 #22 Posted February 25, 2011 David - that purolater is a spin-on, you would have to buy the adapter plate. Where? How Much?
