  1. Don't know what happen but all at once no radio now the controlls work the cassett works but there is no sound put the headset on and at volume 30 can barely hear it was working just dady when i shut it off any suggestions Yes I do have the speaker fade and all set it worked when i shut it off then next day it didn't Split the faring checked the conectors no luck guess this goes to the shop for repair might as well get the damn chrip fixed as well
  2. I just purchase an 85 1st gen Venture. When i start it there seems to be high compression for a split second upon starting then she fires up great and holds an idle. But running seemed rough. I am comparing it to my 84 Honda sabre V65 which is a 90 degree V4. I was wondering if it's just how the engine feels . Then last night I craked open the throttle to make a pass and for a split second there awas a shot of extra power and a slight smoothening that seemed to feel right to me. Then she went back to her normal running. The bike also seems un happy to run in fifth gear at anything less than 65 mph. It'll do it but it seems rough. I haven't changed plugs or airfilter since I brought it home and I intend to run a couple of tanks or Sea Foam through it as well but any suggestions to a newcomer? Thanks Phil.
  3. I went to my local dealer and was told that I cannot buy the black wire tubes that they use on the wiring harness in the factory. Does anybody know where I can get some in different sizes? I cannot find it in all my internet searches? I am not looking for heat shrink tubing or the split loom that is used on most cars. I want my wireing mods to look like they were done in the factory.
  4. Finally got up the courage to cut my 5th gear dogs today. Set it up in my drill press with an adjustable angle vise. I thought this might help keep it straight and I should be able to do the back cut also by angling the vise. Need to get a new stone first, will try that tomorrow night. I just rotated the gear and vice lightly around the stone (as it was turning, of course!) following the curve of the dog. Two dogs started at .0476, the other one was .0484 dimension across the widest part of the curved faces. Cut all three down to .0466 +/- .0001. Looked pretty good, and I believe all the rounded top is gone. Did not grind the other side (deceleration side) as I could not see any rounding on them. Will also try to backcut the slots with the vise as I can duplicate the exact angle I used on the dogs. Thought it might be easier than doing "freestyle" with the Dremel tool. Here are some measurements on the old and new thrust washer and clips and the clip groove in the driven axle: Plate washer: Old 1.98mm thick 25.23mm ID 4.38mm wide (ID to OD) New 2.02mm thick 25.28mm ID 4.38mm wide Thrust clips Old 3.06mm thick 6.67mm width groove cut in by wear .85mm New 3mm thick 6.5mm width Groove on shaft where split clips go-- 3.22mm So, I guess, there is meant to be about .15-.2mm play in the groove where the split clips go? I hope it's ok, 'cause I really don't want to spend $225.00 on a new axle. Any thoughts? I can't figure out why they would make the "new" split clips thinner than the old. Couldn't see much rounding on the pressure side (outboard) of the groove in the axle. Here are some pics Hey, I work in this garage, ain't got time to keep the bench lickety split clean!!!!!
  5. I split my fairing to raise the front end back to stock as I got a speed wobble after I lowered it, and apparently I did not fully seat all the connectors for the stereo as it cuts in and out. Grumble, grumble, grumble...... Now I have to split the fairing again to re-seat all the connectors... I might as well run the wiring for some driving lights at the same time..... AND I don't have the time to do it over the next three weeks, so I will be riding, listening to the mechanical music, not Pink Floyd et al..... Grumble, grumble, grumble......
  6. Finally got the case split and the frame cleaned up. #'s match on motor and frame, so it is original. First a couple of pointers that I had not seen in earlier posts. For some reason, MamaYama decided not to put the drain plug in the lowest portion of the oil pan, so you don't get a complete oil change, nor drain the sludge. It makes it messy when you're tearing down the motor such as I am. I figured this one out, though. Take a gallon oil jug, split it in half vertically. Then follow these pics. I thought it was ingenious! Got about 1/4- 2/3rds quart of oil out of the motor. Just lay a couple of 2x4s on their edge with the split jugs under them and lay the motor over on it's side. By the way, how do you like my hillbilly work bench!?! Next: here are pics of my forks, only 1 showing any face wear, maybe just in the beginning phases of the damage part. I'm not seeing much damage on the gearset, haven't broken down the drive axle set yet (tomorrow?). Whada'ya think? I'm hoping thrust washer, check shaft and fork, replace if necessary. Can't figure out how to get pics between lines to continue commentary, will set new post for my frame questions. Thanks guys, Dan
  7. :no-no-no: No., No , No .... not them there nutts , but the scoot's seat nuts .:rotf: Having heard people talking about being able to take the scoots seat off for multiple reasons , wing nuts vibrating off and loosing them , or not being able to access a wrench easily . So I did the same thing like I did for my saddle bag bolts . Using the original nuts off the stock seat , I drilled a hole completely through the bottom of the 2 seat nuts using an 1/8" bit . I took an 1" stainless steel split ring (like used on key rings) and threaded one through each holes of the each nut . Then I took a stainless steel 10" fishing leader (one end has swivel and other end a snap hook) and thread the swivel end into one of the split rings on one of the nuts . Then I re-attached the nuts back onto the seat , then thread the fishing leader over to the other nut and connected the snap into the other split ring/nut .The leader prevents the nuts from backing off . Cost was only a few dollars and took about 15 minutes to make . Here's a photo . BEER30
