Wow, that guy looks dead! I WAS eating breakfast, but now feel sick to my stomach. You made me laugh this morning. Thanks. Dale.

That looks cool. So does the chromed underside of your passenger footrest. I didn't even know that was an available option. Dale.

Wow, that is the first I've heard of this. He was a very funny man. If you've never seen the bit he does on golf, with the Scottish accent, I think it's on you tube. Great bit. Sad to hear another star gone Dale.

Well, after searching this site for the low down on how to remove the cassette deck and turn it into a storage space, I had no luck finding the post. I'm sure I've seen it here before. Anyway, I want to keep the aux jack available, and perhaps put an iPod in the slot when I want tunes. Has anyone done this, and if so, how did it go? Dale.

Wow, for a bike that age to be brought back to looking new, you have done a great job! You should be proud of what you have accomplished. Dale

Help! I don't know how to change my oil.
Dale124 replied to Dale124's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for all the replies, guys. Don, I am about 11,000 km's, which is around 6,600 miles. I had the oil changed by the dealer twice last year, the second time was right at the end of the season. I was due for a change and the owner of the shop said that if I got it done then, I would not have to wait weeks in the spring to bring it in, as it gets crazy for service there each spring. That was the last oil change I have had done, so, it's certainly time. With your descriptions of the procedure, this might give me something to do today, and it would help me get to know my bike a bit better. One last question. Do I need a torque wrench for reinstalling the drain plug? I had heard that if it is not tightened to spec, it will leak oil. Dale. -
It time for an oil change, and I would like to do it myself. The trouble is, I have never changed my own oil in any vehicle I've ever owned. Hopefully I don't need to turn in my Man Card for admitting that. I was wondering if you guys have some step by step instructions on this hopefully simple task. I do not have a lift, so hopefully that is not required. I don't mind paying for an oil change at the dealership, but it is a pain in the butt having to take it in and either leaving it there for the day, or waiting around till it gets done. Thanks in advance, Dale.

Remembering great friends and good times,, what a Spring 2014 was!!
Dale124 replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Well, my mistake, Puc, the link worked that time. Nice to see the video. Good times, those were. Till we meet again, my friend. Dale. -
Wow, does that sound familiar. I installed my passing lamps a couple of weeks ago, and all was fine. The next day I installed the lamp visors, which meant splitting the fairing again, and after I got it all back together, I tested it, all ok. Went to ride the next morning, and my lights were dead. Once I got home, I checked the fuse, and it was blown. I checked the current before installing the fuse, and it was around 10 amps with all lights on, which is well below the 15 amp fuse value, so I put another fuse in, and it was fine. Went for another ride later that day, and it popped again. Upon further investigation, I found that the very last screw I put in to re-assemble the fairing (the one that goes in the headlight bezel) went right through a wire in the extension harness they give you with the light kit. So I got that fixed, and it worked fine after that for a couple of weeks. Last weekend it popped again. This time I could find no obvious cause, so I taped up all the harness wiring that goes to the lights just in case there is a pinhole sized cut in one of the jackets. It is currently working, although I haven't tested it in a few days. I do not have full confidence in this yet, and am not willing to ride in the dark, just in case. Dale.

I think your link might be faulty, Puc. I was trying to watch, but got nada. Dale. P.S. I thought you were great with names. You must have met several folks on day one at The Dalles, including Doug and myself, and the following day, when I saw you in the lobby of the restaurant, you came up with my name very quickly. I was quite impressed, as it seems that most folks don't remember my name -
That sounds like a nice bike for a good price. Hopefully they take you up on the invite and join the party here. Dale

Headlight fuse blowing when put in gear!
Dale124 replied to Dale124's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I found the issue, thankfully. It seems that when I put the visors on, I was putting everything back together on the fairing, and installed that long screw that goes through the headlight after I put the passing lights back on the frame. Well, this long screw went right through one of the wires from the lamp harness. After fixing that, the problem is gone.... Whew. All is good again, thankfully. Dale -
Well, it seems I do indeed have trouble after putting in my passing lamps. They were working normally when I installed them Friday, but when I went to go for a ride this morning, I noticed I had no headlight or passing lamps. When I got back home I checked the fuse and found it had blown. I checked the current draw when all the lights were on, and it was 10 amps, which is well below the 15 amp fuse, so I put in a replacement fuse, and I was back in business with all lights on. I went to leave, backing my bike out of the garage in nuetral, and I could see the lights reflection in my truck. As soon as I put the bike in gear, the lights went out! Grrrrrr. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Dale

That suggestion just made me think of that scene in Wild Hogs where the guys did just that. Beware of any overly friendly cops, if you decide to take a dip

Yo, Adrian, I did it! (Passing lamp install)
Dale124 replied to Dale124's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
That does not sound like fun. I had heard one member was able to use a fish tape to get wiring under the tank to the other side, and I was thinking of trying that, but then thought that I'd like to see where the wires are going, in case of something like you described, or, resting on something that is somewhat sharp or heats up, etc. Oh well, it will do for now til I get brave. Having taken the fairing apart several times now, I am more confident to do more work on the bike. Now, if only I knew how to change my own oil, I'd be set Dale -

Thanks, all, for the kind words. I think I will eventually install the relay (I have It here for when I get brave). My kit did not come with a device to tap into the headlight power (scotch lock?), even though it was in the instructions, so I had to peel off some of the jacket of the high beam power wire, and soldered onto it. I had the most trouble getting the last step complete, which was installing the newly wired light bar onto the frame, as the fairing blocks the mounting holes. Oh well, it is now done and looks good with all that "safety chrome". Dale. -
Ok, don't be too hard on me, but I may be an idiot. I put the other visors on for the passing lamps and the turn signals, and thought I'd double check the headlight one. It does flex somewhat, so I attempted to put in on, and low and behold, it worked! I guess the part number must fit multiple bikes- in fact, it lists several models on the side of the box. Now, all is back together and looking sharp
-
Hi guys. Ok, the part number on the box is STR-4NK58-10. On the dealers price sticker, there is a -00 after the 10, and it says "Headlight VSR. V-Star". To me it seems like it would have to bend in a lot to actually fit into place. I did not want to attempt this and end up damaging it, then finding out its the wrong one. Dale
-
Sorry for the Rocky reference there, but I am so thrilled that I actually was able to install my passing lamps. I am not a mechanically inclined person, but have some technical skills from my technician background, and I thought that this install doesn't require a motorcycle mechanic to do, and when I was in buying these lamps and the mounting bracket, I asked the guy in the service dept. how long this would take them to install and how much it would be, he didn't seem to know! I was not thrilled with the prospect of paying them $110/hr without knowing how long this might take them, so yesterday I tackled it on my own. I did, however, chicken out on adding the relay, as I did not want to remove the gas tank to get the wiring to the battery. Maybe in the future I might attempt this. Anyway, this took me about 7 hours, which is much lionger than it should have, but I was being very careful not to cause any problems. It seems that when I don't know exactly what I am doing, if there is a way to do it wrong, I will find it. Anyway, I turned the boring looking front end into something much more attractive. Here is the final product. Dale.

Hi all. Yesterday I went to install my new yamaha headlight visor and found it seems way too big. The curve of the visor doesn't follow the curve of the headlight at all! The instructions that were with it say it is a 7" headlight visor for Yamaha Royal Star, and seem to show a completely different headlight assembly in the picture. For those of you that have installed your visor, does this sound like I have the wrong one? Dale.

Wow, that is an amazing story. I'm glad you caught it in time. Hopefully you will not suffer any long term effects from this. Dale.

New Venture related corn hole boards arrived today
Dale124 replied to dingy's topic in Watering Hole
It's funny that they call in that. Around these parts, corn hole meant something completely different. I would say what it meant, but I have a feeling it might just get me in trouble. -
Not motorcycle related. Have you tried this unit?
Dale124 replied to Dale124's topic in Watering Hole
Sorry, Cof, I was thinking of you there, but I thought the base you were stationed at was a fair distance from there. We did have a blast in your fine town. Dale
