Implying??? If you were riding in 1978... YOU'RE OLD. I should know, I started riding in 1975 myself. Wish I had something that nice back then. Mine was a 1974 Suzuki TS-185. Hmmm... That makes me wonder if I have any old pics of that bike?

Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well there's something new to think about over my holiday. Don't know if those spray tubes would be long enough. Given the angle of the drain, I'd have to come at each one from the other side, but it's worth a try. I have a can of aerosol carb cleaner. would that work if I could get it in there? Thanks. -
Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!

George, and everyone else, Thanks for sticking with me for so long. This has been a very long and frustrating process. :thumbdown:I did the carb drain today, and a significant amount of gas came out of only two of the carbs. Very little if anything out of the other two, which leads me to believe the only way I'm going to get this running is to pull the carbs, which I don't have much desire to do myself. I just don't have the confidance that I'll get it done right or put back together properly if I go that far. I've spent so much time already that it seems I would be better off to try and get it in to a mechanic to make sure it gets done right. (I guess) I'll give it some thought over the holidays (I'll be out of town) and let you know if I change my mind. Once again, I REALLY DO APPRECIATE all the help you guys have given me. I've learned a lot about my bike and I am grateful for that. Keep up the great work here. -
Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!

Thanks. I'll check to see if the leak might be behind the false heads. No idea how far off the sync may be. My plan was to take it somewhere to get it synced once I got it running. -
Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK, OK, I'll drain the bowls. Only reason I didn't do it today was I couldn't get at the allen head screw with my tools at hand, and I was rushed cause I had to go into my office this afternoon. Darned jobs, they tend to get in the way sometimes. As far as the tank goes, yes, I drained it and the flow from the petcock seemed to be fine. No indication of a problem with it being clogged. -

I agree. The only connection is that the bike sat for six weeks waiting for the clutch repair. -

You go for it Bill. No such thing as too old. If you love what you do, then do it as long as you can. Me on the other hand, I can't wait to retire. I hate what I do. (accounting) Been looking most of my adult life for a business that I could get started on my own. Never had the right idea come along and I don't have the resources to buy one.

Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, I'm just about to give up! I have: put in fresh plugs put in fresh gas replaced fuel filter soaked carbs in Sea-Foam for 2 1/2 days Took quite a while to get all that Sea-Foam through the system. (long fuel lines) Smoked like a mutha for a while, but now it's burning gas again. Starts fine with choke on. Idles OK, although never revving up to the level it used to when choke is on. But as soon as I try to give it any throttle at all, it dies. If I try to gradually push the choke off... it dies. I've monkeyed with the idle screw, but if I try to turn it too high, it sputters. I'm out of ideas. And on top of all this, now I have two new problems. I now have a slight drip (green) of what I assume is coolant from the left side of the long narrow cover sitting in between the pistons. I guess this is a cover over the water pump maybe? Something to do with the cooling system from what I can tell in the service manual and parts diagrams. It appears there is a gasket (rubber?) in between the two pieces of the cover, so I guess that blew. And the last item, there appears to be exhaust gas coming out from under the valve cover on the right rear piston. I realize there is an exhaust pipe right below there, but I looked real close and the smoke really looks like it's coming out from right below the valve cover, and not from the pipe/manifold. So... Anybody want to buy a great looking 2001 RSV in need of a bit of work? .....Just kidding. -
Thanks, Eck!

Anybody have an answer to this? Also, FYI to anyone else who hasn't seen it, here's another older thread with some additional info/procedures. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11035

Thanks guys. I was just about to post this question when I found this thread. I too thought I was going to have to pull the fuel pump and most of the brackets around it to get to that little bugger. So you're saying that once you get the rubber sleeve loose that there is plenty of fuel line to pull the whole thing up and out to where you can replace the filter? Once it's been replaced, could I remove that sleeve and just tuck everything back in place? It seems like it's a tight enough area - what could it hurt to have it in there loose?

Question reference 2000MM Venture
Yamaman replied to wasabe58's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was wondering the same thing. Also, if anyone is interested, bike number 1 of 1500 is listed on ebay right now. Only has 7K miles and appears to be MINT! -
Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thank you, Thank you! A picture IS worth a thousand words! The picture in the service manual that I was looking at showed a phillips head screw, so I wasn't looking for an allen head. But now I see both the screw and the drain pipe. It does look like a section of tubing could be slipped onto the drain pipe, but it's so danged tight that I can't even get my smallish hands in far enough to do it. I'm still working on the Sea-Foam soak, so I don't want to drain them unless I have to. But now I know how to do it if I need to. Thanks again! -
2009 VMax – Starting point for 3rd Gen Venture???
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Watering Hole
Agreed. They are two different bikes for different purposes. If I could afford both, I would want both. The vmax motor would clearly need to be set up differently for the Venture. I just don't know what that ends up being - HP and torque-wise. My only point is the new RSV needs to be more than just the old RSV with a new motor. If Yamaha is smart they will try to build a touring bike that is so compelling that Wing and Ultra Classic owners will want to switch. It needs to look like a motorcycle (i.e, a 2nd Gen/HDUC) and ride like a sports/tourer. (i.e. 1st Gen/Wing/C14) Don't know if this is possible, but if they could do it, they wouldn't be able to make enough of 'em.- 21 replies

2009 VMax – Starting point for 3rd Gen Venture???
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Watering Hole
Now we're talking... That's what I want to hear. I don't have a clue how much horsepower is the right number. Obviously the Venture doesn't need to (or can't) compete with the Vmax in performance. It just needs to kick Honda's and H-D's butts! And that means the NEXT Gen of those bikes, not the current/previous Gen. If there's a new GW coming out, then the new RSV has got to be FASTER.- 21 replies

2009 VMax – Starting point for 3rd Gen Venture???
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Watering Hole
Not at all! Front fairing, seat, and are those saddlebags? At the very least it's a touring version of the Vmax. Just as I was saying, there have GOT to be additional bikes in the pipeline that use this motor.- 21 replies

2009 VMax – Starting point for 3rd Gen Venture???
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Watering Hole
I understand waiting all these years and being disappointed. But it seems now they have no reason not to update the RSV. No manufacturer continues to make the same model indefinaitely. And why continue to build and maintain two different big V-4s. Wouldn't there be efficiencies gained by using the same basic motor for multiple bikes? Since the overall diminsions of the new motor are not that far from the older one (current Venture?), worst case scenario couldn't they just slap the new motor into the old bike, and update a few cosmetic and feature areas. I know that's not what would be ideal, but they could still solve some problems and give us a new bike without a full blown re-development. Now if they really want to make a splash in the touring market, keep the style of the current bike, but improve the handling and performance, lower the center of gravity, stick in a 150-160 HP version of the Vmax motor, and start kicking Honda AND H-D's butt!- 21 replies

Just wondering if anyone else thinks that Yamaha will take this sweet new motor developed for the VMax and use it as a basis for additional big displacement bikes like the Venture and Tour Deluxe, or even a more stripped down V-4 cruiser? Here’s a good article if you haven’t read much on the VMax yet: http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/2009-star-motorcycles-vmax-full-review-86751.html You know they hear us clamoring for a new Venture after 10+ years. As much as some of us love our 2nd Gens, we’re all well aware that it’s time for some improvements. It’s hard for me to believe they would sink all that development money into a new engine only to use it on a single, limited production bike. And while I don’t expect them to build a 200 HP Venture, I would imagine they could do the same thing as back in the 80’s and just de-tune it some for the touring bike. So, how long would it take to come up with a new Venture, and do you think they are already working on it? At what point in the development would they make an announcement? Not now, I’m sure, they don’t want to steal any thunder from the VMax, but if it were going to come out in 2010 or 2011 it seems like they would have to be already be working on it. Any thoughts?

When you start to compare the 1st Gen to the Concours, that tells me that what you want that the 2nd Gen doesn't offer is more of the Sportiness / performance side of riding. So wouldn't the modern updated version (as provided by Yamaha) be the FJR?

Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!
Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK George, I found the exploded carb diagram. Its' in this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2477 On page 26, item 12 is identified as the drain plug, and item 62 as the pipe. If this is what I want then it seems this part of the carb is in the middle of the cluster. Doesn't seem like it would be accessable with removing the carbs from the bike. If this is not the right drain plug, then where on the diagram is the one you're talking about? Thanks. -

Yamaman replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, we must have different service manuals - page 5-1 is the radiator in mine. Also, I looked at your profile and it says you own a 1st Gen. You do realize that we're talking about a 2nd Gen here, right? Anyway, I just gave it a quick look following your instructions, and no luck yet, but it's after midnight and I'm pretty tired, so I'll give it another go tomorrow after work. Thanks for all the help. Sorry I'm so "carb" challenged! -
Bike not running right - HELP PLEASE!

It runs, but only at idle with choke fully on. As soon as I begin to twist the throttle, it dies. So I can't take it for a hard run. -

OK, I've been looking everywhere. Where is this carb bowl drain screw? Is that the screw discussed at the bottom of page 6-10 in the service manual? Where the heck is it? Can I get to it without pulling the carbs off the bike? I've looked at every carb page in the service manual and exploded diagram I can find. Can't locate the bugger.
