I bought it from an EBay site. Will need to do some checking to find the seller. Will let you know when I find it. RR
-
I also carry tools and parts. Haven't needed them on my bike, but have used them on others. RR

I replaced the screen/touchpad a month or so ago. Works great now and is a bit brighter. My 550 is about 6 years old and has been beat around pretty well. Never had a problem with it. Use it for routing, MP3s, XM, and bluetooth for the phone. I have gotten my money's worth. The 665 will be next if the 550 ever dies. BTW, I almost always carry paper maps with me just in case. RR

It also helps to have hands like a 10 year old Pakastani rug weaver. Good on you for getting it done. RR

It's only 767 miles from Milwaukee. You need a selection for less than 1 day Do you intend to stop riding after lunch? RR

Try loading the previous working firmware/mapset. This will likely take care of it. Keep an eye on the Garmin site to see when a newer firmware is released and then try that. This is not without precedent. In the LD community, it is common knowledge to never update a GPS right before a run. Kind of like never wake a sleeping baby. RR
-
Was the problem happening before you updated? RR

http://www.zumoforums.com - Location for knowledge all things Zumo. I expect you will need to upgrade the mapset/firmware. There have been occasions where an upgrade will cause problems. Either load a newer or a known good older version and the problem will likely be solved. RR

What is your ultimate riding goal? To be comfortable for X miles: X = X = 200-400 miles per day. Stock seat with pad. Gel, sheepskin, beads, Airhawk. X = 300-500 miles per day. Butt Butler rework. X = 400-600 miles per day. Butt Butler with pad. Gel, sheepskin, beads, Airhawk. X = 600+ miles per day. Custom seat. Russell Day Long, Rick Meyer Saddles, Laam (Laam is new and I haven't tried their seat yet. Will be purchasing one for my KLR shortly to test.) I have been through all of these options. As pads go, the Airhawk is by far the best. Had mine for about 6 years and it had one leak. IIRC, it comes with a patch kit. Patched it up and it has worked flawlessly ever since. My wife uses it when we ride together since I am too cheap to upgrade the passenger seat for only a couple of relatively short rides per year. Every butt is different so the mileage ranges above may vary slightly, but the order is pretty fixed. If your goal is to do Iron Butt runs in comfort, skip spending on the pads and go directly to the Russell or Meyer saddle (if you are over 250 lbs - Russell is a far better choice). If you want to do the occasional 500 mile day, see if you can borrow a pad of your choosing and try it out. FYI, Russell is about $500; Meyer is about $400, Laam; should be about $300. All are built on your current seat pan. Airhawk is about $150 although you can find them used. Gel pads are from $50 to $100. I ride long distances (IB runs) and have been VERY pleased with my Russell. As an aside, there are often different factors at play with seat comfort. Airflow under your butt can make a big difference when it is hot out. The best seat with a sweaty butt is still going to be uncomfortable for long distances. A dry butt will help a decent seat feel wonderful. Where this is leading - sometimes it takes more than one solution to be comfortable in all riding environments. In the heat, a sheepskin and/or beads will really make a huge difference even with a custom seat. As will the proper undergarments. Some of these items are cheap and don't take up much room. Sheepskin from IKEA for about $25. Cut to size. Beaded seat from Walmart for about $10. Look at the construction and you will see how to easily customize the car seat beads to fit the Venture seat. Wicking undergarments without seams also help for long distance runs. My favorite is LDComfort.com. Not cheap, but excellent quality and wonderful functionality. It is a company founded by a long distance motorcycle rider (no relationship with company other than a happy customer). RR

+1 on the Barnett kit. Did the PCW spring along with the full inner disc mod and it still slipped in 30k miles. The Barnett hasn't slipped in about 25k miles so still have a few miles to compare. RR

Congratulations Don. Welcome to the club (we have cookies). RR

Think through how you will document this. You will need to get a receipt at each corner. It certainly can be done, but you want to make sure it gets properly credited. RR

How to tell...headlight
RedRider replied to Bert2006's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I used the cheap CustomCruiser HID. Once you put a time delay or switch in the circuit so the HID isn't lit when you start the bike, it works great. Otherwise, it burns out. Do a search on here and there are several manufacturers. RR -
Good luck Don. Make sure to check your gas receipts for location, date, and time. If the pay-at-the-pump receipt does not have this info, go inside to get it from the attendant. RR

If I don't feel like waving - I take the BMW. RR

+1 on replacing your lines with SS. Your current lines are 12+ years old. On page 7-6 of the owners manual it calls for brake and clutch hoses to be replaced every 4 years. Mind you, it also calls for the seals in the master cylinders, clutch slave, and calipers to be replaced every two years. I don't think so. One simple thing I might suggest, lube the pivot point of your brake lever. If you haven't done this before, you likely will be surprised at the results. Easy and cheap. Just like 1st Gen owners. RR

Clutch Not Working
RedRider replied to Royal MN's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you have an air compressor, the vacuum bleeder from HF actually works really well. RR -
My CB antenna seems to be messed up. Haven't taken it apart yet, but will soon. Are there any good aftermarket antennas to replace this with? Sorry, too lazy to do the search as I'm sure the info is already in here somewhere. Thanks, RR

I have updated my headlight and aux lights to HID and am constantly concerned about one of them burning out. Any time I am behind a PU truck or a minivan, I check for the triangle of light from all 3 HIDs. Haven't had any difficulties in several years. But to answer you actual question, there is no indicator for either headlight or brakelight failure. RR -
What GPS are you using? If it's a Zumo, you can bluetooth your phone thru that and use your wired system. RR

Front wheel bearing size?
RedRider replied to Ventureless's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I don't think I saved the old bearings when I changed mine out last year. I recall they were FAG, although, I wouldn't bet the rent on my memory. They are a sealed, pre-lubed bearing. Your dealer should be able to get them next day. $20 ea. on BikeBandit. RR -
They should be torqued to a specific torque. 23 Nm or 17 ftlb. You can pinch the rubber dampers between the handlebars and the fairing and they will stay. I suggest you have a second (and maybe a third) person to help hold everything in place as you tighten the clamps down. Without the rubber dampers, the fairing flexes and will likely crack. To install the risers is not hard, just cumbersome. It helps a lot (I'm 6'4"). Also, the risers will hit the ignition cover. I just cut the cover to create the clearance needed. It is just plastic. But then, I don't really show off my bike unless it just had its annual bath. RR

Don, I did 1015 miles on a 24 hour rental of a Road Glide Ultra last year. Yes, the dealer was quite surprised. However, at 70 to 75 mph, I was getting about 44 mpg IIRC. If you have an Airhawk, take it with you. You will need it for your tailbone (assuming you still have the stock seat). You may want to also take some beads and a sheepskin. I used all 3 at different times on my run. I was pleasantly surprised with the road manners of the HD. Handled nicely and had plenty of power. The 6th gear only seems to come into play after about 70 mph. It causes vibrations below that. Don't think I would ever own one though. But, we shall see. Lots of riding years left - I hope. I did not turn in any paperwork for this Harley run. Got enough certificates on the wall. RR
