Tips before to buy :)
Prairiehammer replied to ceneremusic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gabriele, I would surely appreciate any information about your bike that I could add to the database. European Ventures are scarce. See my thread here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?89793-Seeking-1983-1993-VIN-for-a-comprehensive-database -

Go here for my write up about changing my fuseblock on my 1990: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?66650-Upgraded-and-updated-Fuse-block%28s%29&highlight=fuse+block And here is the before picture of my 1991 fuse situation: And here is the after: The CLASS fuse is in the rubber inline fuse holder. -

The "SIGNAL" fuse (Brown wire in, Brown wire out). In your picture, I don't see any wire coming out of one end of the upper (in pic) yellow fuse holder? -

My research indicates that there is just one LIT-11616-12-60 (but with different publishing dates).

Starter rebuild
Prairiehammer replied to 920shrek1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The black grimy stuff is most likely carbon residue from the brushes. Since you have it out, it would be a shame to not replace the stock two brush with a four brush. Here's one for $56 plus shipping. Jus' sayin'. http://www.ebay.com/itm/311440481033?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT And here is one that the seller has listed since November and has a "Make Offer" possibility. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131646204706?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT -
exhaust collector options
Prairiehammer replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Is this a pic of YOUR collector? Someone has already performed "open heart surgery" to the collector. The welding done on the underside of the collector indicates someone previously cut open the collector and probably removed the loose internal baffle, then sewed it back up. Since it is highly likely, that this surgery was performed with the collector off bike, perhaps the PO did not use new exhaust gaskets on the nipples when it was reinstalled (item #27 in attached pic). -
Here is an example of what ***-23144-00-00 fits: As you can see it is the 3 character prefix that matters.
-
Actually you have the part numbers and description reversed; 26H-23144 is for the DUST seals and 26H-23145 is for the OIL seals. http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/outboard/Y-26H-23144-00-00.html http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/outboard/Y-26H-23145-00-00.html No, it won't fit just because the 23144 is the same. In fact, the 3 character prefix is the key to what bike it will fit. "23144" is a constant Yamaha number for fork seals for many models, it is the 26H or the 1NL or the 41V or the 59J that differentiates models. And by the way most VMax parts start with 1FK, though there are many 26H parts on a VMax and some 1FK parts on a Venture.

new to me 86 venture royale

Hypothetically, yes, you didn't hurt anything, oops...um, hypothetically that other guy didn't hurt anything. Just slow to warm and paradoxically it may tend to run too hot. -
Tips before to buy :)

@utadventure (Dave)is correct about the most likely reasons for your complaints, however I would add one further concerning the braking capability: The Venture is HEAVY, approximately 785 pounds (360 kilos) and that is the advertised weight! I have found the Venture to be even heavier in the real world, especially after adding various accessories and "farkles". Throw on the rider weight and a passenger and luggage and I have weighed my loaded Venture at more than 500 kilos. No matter how good the brakes are, 500 kilos is not going to stop like a sport bike, especially if you only use the front brake lever or only the rear brake pedal. The Venture stock brake system is linked and certainly lacks stopping power if only one half is used at a time. BTW, that 1991 you are looking at is almost the same as my 1991. -
One cautionary note about the Big Bike Parts Trunk Light and the "trunk bumper" (Tour Box Trim Rail): the Tour Box Trim Rail, if mounted as intended will not clear the Big Bike Parts trunk light. Karaboo had to relocate the Tour Box Trim Rail to clear the BBP trunk light, because the BBP trunk light is thicker and crashes into the VentureLine Tour Box Trim Rail ("trunk bumper"). So he has four extra holes in the sides of his trunk where the VentureLine Tour Box Trim Rail was originally mounted. I have the VentureLine Tour Box Trim Rail already mounted to my trunk and had intended to add the BBP Trunk Light, but I am hesitant to remove and remount the Tour Box Trim Rail, leaving four holes in my trunk sides. There are five attachment points for the VentureLine Tour Box Trim Rail, two on each side and a fifth in the middle, at the rear. The supplied strap bracket for the middle rear mount is too short as supplied to place the Tour Box Trim Rail far enough rearward to clear the Big Bike Parts lighted reflector. I have my Tour Box Trim Rail lights wired as brake lights, so the BBP lights may be redundant. Just a heads up.

Another DUH clutch question

Port/front (left front) is number 2 cylinder. The most common fault is an obstructed pilot circuit in the carb. I recently worked on a 1983 Venture in which TWO cylinders were cold and it still idled and ran good enough to load onto a trailer (and it was burdened with a sidecar!). Owner commented that "it was running fairly good and but WOW! when it "got on the pipe" it was a rocket!" That reaction is another tell that the pilot circuit is FUBAR.

Mark II 2nd gear popping out

The easiest and surest way to determine a 1200 from a 1300 engine is by looking at the engine number. BTW, care to submit your VIN? And build date? -
86 venture radio and cb antennas
Prairiehammer replied to dan0688's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The stock antenna folds. Unscrew the chrome knurled sleeve, lift the sleeve and the antenna folds forward. -
I look for information on a bag
Prairiehammer replied to KISA's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have two of those VentureLine tank bags. They were made by Eclipse for Yamaha. One of my bags was a NOS find, the other is only slightly used but is missing the mounting straps. The bags are not large and are not water/rain proof. But, is large enough to contain my travel bike cover, a can of Pledge, a microfibre cleaning cloth, log book, LED flashlight, pens, calculator, wire ties, spare fuses, etc. The clear map holder snaps on or off and has a ZipLoc type closure on the map holder. The mounting system consists of a harness with straps and hooks that attach under the front of the faux tank cover and a loop that slips over the fuel tank door latch striker plate. There is Velcro hooks on the straps and Velcro loops on the bags underside. -
Yep, rougeray is correct. That braided cloth over rubber hose is a low pressure supply line from the rear brake reservoir to the rear brake master cylinder. Factory installed hose clamps.

Coincidentally, just yesterday, I found that there is a minor mistake in the Yamaha wiring diagram (and in Dingy's schematic). Yamaha shows the wire color from the connector to the coil to be either gray, orange, yellow or white along with the common red/white wire. In fact, the wire color from the coil connector to the coil is orange (along with the red/white) on all coils.

Getting to the ignition coil connectors is fairly difficult. One may remove the main fairing(s) and the inner fairing(s) to gain access to the coils and their connectors. Or one may remove the battery box/holder. Removing the battery box usually requires inner fairing removal, however. One MAY be able to access the connectors from the top, in front of the battery, but I suspect not. There is a lot of electrical bundles, fuse block, etc in the way. Check out this pic of my Venture with all fairings and plastic removed, revealing the coils and the coil connectors. Notice what has to be removed to access the connectors?
