  1. If Yamaha has dropping sales perhaps they should reconsider their efforts. Because they are obviously not offering what buyers want. The idea of throwing away their customer base every few years and then working to get a new one has never seemed efficient to me. But of course that is just my opinion and the only weight it holds is that of a now tossed out and no longer relevant customer. Mike
  2. An quick and easy way to tell is to put both in the sunlight. Then measure their surface temperature. The hottest is absorbing the coolest is reflecting. Mike
  3. Higher octane fuel burns slower. The higher the octane number the slower the burn and the less apt to detonate. If you use high octane fuel in an engine designed for faster burning regular fuel you may not get complete combustion. In other words you may be wasting fuel. if you use faster burning regular fuel in an engine designed for high octane fuel you may get pre ignition or spark knock. Which can damage the engine. Many newer engines have knock sensors. So many of these vehicles can adjust to the available fuel. My Lincoln Navigator requires premium but I use regular fuel without issues. This works because the computer and knock sensors adjust for the fuel. However if I was towing a heavy load I would opt for the slower burning premium fuel. Mike
  4. Hi Christopher The plugs should not be coming out black and sooty. The RSV does not have overwhelming torque in first gear but it isn't that bad either. Your mileage does sound off though. On the open road most people experience over 40 depending on conditions. Even 35 would be ok. If you can find another member in your area perhaps he can ride yours for a comparison. I would not expect you to need a carb rebuild but I also don't know your mileage or the overall condition of the bike. Best of luck to you as you get things sorted out. Mike
  5. Ok this is something I have posted about before. If you open the flasher. Cut the bare wire as seen in the photographs and solder in a .33 ohm resistor it will slow the flasher rate. Mike
  6. I much prefer the flasher mod over the load equalizer. The load equalizer draws current to simulate light bulbs. The flasher mod reduces current flow. Mike
  7. Not that light. My head light. My head...light. Ok so I went out to start my Venture today. I hadn't ridden for several months and I admit I was a little apprehensive. Made sure the choke was set. Turned the key on and waited for the fuel pump to stop. Then I cranked it over. It cranked but didn't start. Reposition the choke and crank some more. Then some more. Now I am getting worried on how long the battery can last. Tap the carbs, open the gas cap. Still no start. I finally notice the fuel pump seems to be running longer and longer. I am not out of gas. Then I dawns on me. My light turns on so hard it almost explodes right out of my head. So I turn the petcock to run and the bike starts right up. Mike
  8. Weave and wobble can be very dangerous. But it can be stopped. Stopping a dangerous situation while riding is different than curing the bike to keep it from happening. This video has been around for a long time and is worth watching again. Mike
  9. Just remember. When in doubt power out. As stopping in the middle of a slow speed turn can be harmful. Mike
  10. way cool. You can brag a lot. Mike
  11. Brian Take that fuse and possibly the circuit board to any electrical shop and they can supply you with a correct replacement. Mike
  12. OK For those who asked. To check for water put some fuel in a clear glass. Cover the glass and let it sit for a few hours. Overnight is better. The water and gasoline will separate with the gas floating to the top. You will be able to see the separation clearly. Mike
  13. How long has the gas been in the tank? Ventures are very gas friendly but there are limits. Is the choke (fuel enrichment) working? Pull the hose from the petcock and check for fuel flow. This is also a good time to catch some fuel in a glass and check for water. Mike
  14. I have a friend who has a friend who is married to a girl who is a cousin to a Yamaha rep and he says she says Yamaha will be introducing a new Venture last week. For sure. Mike
  15. If memory serves and it may not. Deka 1231 or Trojan have sufficient amp hour ratings. I think your truck calls for 1100. Consider industrial batteries rather than automotive. Mike
  16. A hitch is easy enough to install on the Venture. I wired mine with a 5 wire plug. I felt that was the easiest for Japanese bikes. Then if needed I could use an adaptor for the trailer. In my case I modified my trailer for 5 wire. Mike
  17. Yep M1 Carbine. Got it back from the gunsmith today. It had a badly worn sear. Which he replaced. It is all better now. The bill was only $60.00 so it didn't hurt too bad. And I feel better for having had a gunsmith check it out. Mike
  18. I hate to see the plug pulled on Victory. Makes me wonder if Yamaha might reconsider a new Venture. Perhaps we won't see one after all. Mike
  19. Why I remember when I was just a wee little kid. I used to walk ten miles every day in the freee... What was I saying? I forgot. Mike
  20. Congratulations Rick. I was born and raised in Illinois and I can tell you without a doubt it is a great state to be far away from. Mike
  21. Your latest description makes me wonder if it is a fuel problem or not. I think you need to find a way to check spark when in the no start condition. Just to be sure you are not chasing ghosts. Also it is easy enough to pull the fuel hose off the petcock to see if fuel flows out of the tank. Mike
  22. I give up. Some time ago I used MSN as my internet service provider. Including MSN.com e-mail. Early on I wanted to set up their e-mail as pop3. Well after several calls to customer service we finally decided to transition to Hot Mail as the issues could not be resolved. Then a couple of years ago Microsoft changed their support of Hot Mail and I had to download Outlook Connector to continue using Hot Mail as pop3. Then last July weird things started happening. Mail returned to sender, folders wouldn't synchronize etc. I blamed that on Windows 7 sp1 as I had allowed Microsoft to update my computer. That was a mess. Worse than a virus and could not be fully uninstalled. Even with back-up. I finally had to go to Windows 10. But my next computer will not be Microsoft. That is for sure. It finally got to where MSN e-mail was not working at all. Today I talked to Microsoft customer service again. Turns out they completely changed Hot Mail and Outlook again last July without notice. If I want to be able to download my e-mail all I need to do is purchase their new Outlook 2016 ($99) as it is compatible with their new mail format. Or I can just access my e-mail on line, except for what they send back as undeliverable of course. So after years with the same e-mail address I have begun the tedious process of notifying my accounts of my new address. Which is NOT Microsoft or MSN or anything else that starts with an M. Mike
  23. Congratulations on the new Job. I hope everything works out as hoped. Mike
