  1. 2006 - and newer Harley FLH Touring mufflers are not the same side to side! Left side is basically a Boom Box and the right side is a muffler. Don't ask how I know! Bought a set off a 2007 Electraglide on e-bay and when they arrived - ugh! Cross checked the part numbers and guess what? They were correct for 2007. Also, you need to make sure that they are not Cat muffler & Cat box!
  2. J & M used to sell one that plugged directly in between the stator output leads and the regulator. It stopped everything! Rumor is Rivco may still have some??? Also try Sierra Electronics as they may have an option.
  3. Depending on mileage - check the tubes where your needles slide in and out. If you can imagine the needles ( diaphrams) move in and out in a sawing motion constantly and it is the last place anybody looks for wear! I have seen alot of backyard mechaincs drop the needles thinking this is the best fix when changing out the tubes will make the thing run like a top! Of all of the 3 First gen's I've had at around 100,000 km's ish they were starting to get oval and then the mileage would start to go bad. Then when you pulled the cover off the diaphrams you would notice un burnt fuel hanging around. Just a thought!
  4. And that's why I finally got rid of my 88 Royale and went to a new 1600 Nomad with a Premuix Fairing!
  5. There is something definitely not completey right with your Venture. Yes all Ventures "Chug" when they idle, but not that they rattle things. I have accidentally pulled away from a light in 3rd gear a couple of times and the bike complains abit, but does not rattle the dash. I've been known ( I know its not right) to cruise thru small towns two up with the tent trailer behind in 5th gear @ 25 - 30 Mph and it will pull cleanly back to 60 mph ( notice I did not say briskly). Sounds like one cylinder is not running right, when the Black box calved on my 85, the thing first started to miss slightly on one cylinder til around 3000 RPM, then it went away, then the cylinder just went dead, then another cylinder started the same thing - then we had a Harley ( chugged on 2 cylinders ) and then it died. Got a new Black Box and everything was all better! Turned out the stealer had filled the Battery with it in the bike and Acid had spilled and after time had eaten the connectors on the Black box and also some of the metal in the area that it had come in contact with. We all thought it was the Box that had corroded contacts but could not explain the other metal damage. A little bird informed us that a Pre-delivery /tech had been fired for half heartedly servicing brand new bikes and that more than one had come back with problems!
  6. Surge brakes work on the principle of the actuator is on the trailer tongue. When the trailer starts to push against the tow vehicle the brakes are activated. This is not a big deal on a car or truck! However, on a motorcycle you only have two wheels and if you ever rode over washboard roads you would get the same sensation, wheels hopping, excessive movement side to side plus the push pull same as if you pop the clutch and don't give it any gas. This is not good!!!
  7. I'm not sure what the issue is with Electric Trailer Brakes as long as they are not the Surge type! I had Dexter 12 VDC brakes on my Combi-camp way back and they worked the cat's a--! The controller was in the saddle bag and they worked off a switch on the right controls under the throttle or off the brake lights. The emergency stop was disabled and they had a small time delay so they would not come on hard when applied. With it set up this way they would not let the trailer push you when stopping. I had used them on many winding roads ( Grand Tetons - Logan's Pass - Snake River Gourge) and I could ride as if I didn't have a trailer! I have done emgergency stops both in a straight line and in corners at Speed ( 70 - 80 MPH) deer related and one big Moose with no problems. In the rain it was better to use the Trailer brakes first then modulate the bike brakes. Also, if the trailer brakes would lock up the bike would act as if you had the biggest boat anchor and drag the bike down to a halt.
